Hey guys im looking to start a necron List but im not sure where to begin. I want it to be for pure competition. I want the list to be around 1750 points or 2000. could someone give me some decent imput? I have been looking at the other Necron lists but its hard to tell what works and what doesnt.

If any list you see runs more than 20-30 Warriors, it is probably a bad list. That being said, there aren't any really "good" lists, per se. As long as you don't run too many Warriors, you can probably make a decent list.

I was really interested in The nightbringer and running a lot of Wraiths. I know people say their bad but they seem pretty tough in CC.

The problem with Wraiths is they're not actually good at killing things in CC and you can only put 3 in a squad (if all the Wraiths are down, nobody gets WBB roll). Also, they pretty much require a 200 point Necron Lord on a destroyer body with a res orb and warscythe to compete

Well, the problem with not bringing a lot of warriors is Phasing out, a major problem with most 'Powerful' Necron lists.

You want the Nightbringer but he is a crap-load of points, and most people know to just avoid him and phase the army out before he makes a difference. C'tan, Monoliths, Pariahs, what-not do not count towards your phase out count but take up a great deal of points in your force.

I'd say pump up on Destroyers, Warriors, (Maybe Immortals, this is usually a personal preference really), and perhaps Heavy Destroyers first. You want to form up your Phase out count to begin with, usually shoot for at least 25-30 models that can die before you phase out on a list this large.

I play Grey Knights, and I screwed up against Necrons and still won... that's how important it is to realize the Phase out rule.

For a competitive list, you're going to want Monoliths and C'tan (Almost a contradiction to my prior speech, but they are tough units, and help to move your troops around). Necron Lords take Res Orbs always, to keep your troops alive against Power weapons and total wipe-out. Pop him on a Destroyer body if you wish, but basically you want to form a massive fire line with a Lord at the center raising them as they fall.

Yeah, necron lists are usually relatively cookie cutter, you want 3 monoliths, min 20-30 warriors, and a lord with a res orb, Or a flying circus, with 3x5 destroyers, 3x3 heavy destroyers, 20 warriors, and a lord with destroyed body+resorb+ warscythe.

Necrons are hard to win with in the current meta, as the phase out rule is pretty crippling, if you lose CC, it is likely that you will lose the squad (not fearless or stubborn), glances don't kill, and warriors are hard to claim objectives with.

if you keep 3x3 squads of wraiths close together with a lord+resorb+destroyer body+warscythe, you should be relatively ok, but that is 500+ worth of models, and not really worth it imo.

check the recent betreps. there is a necron player that went to round two that has been posting his batreps from 'ardboys. I think the core of his list is two monoliths, deceiver, warriors, destoyers...

sorry i can't be more specific at the moment.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

Yeah i hear that mazing out destroyer squads and heavy destroyers makes a decent list. I just wanted something a little different. Im beginning to see that wanting to play something different means losing every game lol.

How about running something crazy like 3 Monos, 10 Destroyers, a huge unit of scarabs, and 30 warriors or so. This way you can teleport all of your warrior units through the Monos each turn...maybe even throw in a C'tan...seems like it would work but then again nothing ever works how you want it to.

Well, to teleport units you have to be within.. I think it's 12" of the mono to do it. Scarabs don't count towards your phase out so pumping a lot of them wouldn't help too much since S6 insta-kills them.

Another forum I post on is actually having the debate as to whether Necrons are competitive anymore, I think they can be, but the consensus there is that they are not anymore. Just a thought. :(

Yeah i mean...their really not competitive lol. Im def not trying to say they are. I also play Orks and CSM which do pretty well against most...i just wanted to build a Crons army that would be decent enough to brag about when i win haha. Also, i love the models and when their all painted up, they look amazing =)

Running 20-30 Immortals is pretty fun, too. That many T5 bodies can be tough to phaseout. Bring 2 squads of 5 scarab swarms to keep the Immortals in mobile cover.
