Well, I'm a DE player since the 3rd edition came out.

I'd start with an Archon or a Dracon in smaller games giving him agonizer, splinter pistol, shadow field, combat drugs.

Then you need two troop choices.
I'd take either
2x 10 Warriors with 2 dark lances each or
2x 10 Warriors with 1 dark lance each mounted in a Raider with dark lance.

I'd spend the remaining points for some Ravagers either with 3 dark lances or 3 disintegrators.

Downunder

Raider Squads. Bastards. Capture every objective in turn one if things go wrong.

Once saw a CTF-style match between SM and DE with respawning units that were killed, fled off-table or fell back into one of two "Despawn" points in the middle of the battlefield.
Raider squads kept grabbing the flag, getting mid-way before being downed, another one flies by and picks up, BAM point scored.

In other words, consider a raider squad or two.

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

So if i start with the battle force -
1 Raider
10 Warriors
with a dark Lance

5 Reaver Jet Bikes

10 Warriors with Dark Lance

then add

Archon with agoniser, splinter pistol,Shadow field, combat drugs in the raider
how do you think i'd fare

I'e be looking to expand with 5 Wyches and another Raider/Ravager or a group of Scourge with Splinter rifles

750 DE
Haemonculous-25

5 Warriors + Splinter cannon+raider-105
5 warriors +splinter cannon + raider - 105
5 warriors + Splinter cannon+ raider- =105
5 warriors + raider -95

Ravager- 105
Ravager- 105
Ravager- 105

Don't know if it's legal to have an HQ with no weapons... 3rd ed codexes are a little jinky in that respect, but if it is, I think this would be a good 750 list, and a good start to a raider list.

remember that raiders are open topped, which means you can use all small arms in them, so you can zoom around and fire the dark lance along with 4 cannon shots and 4 rifle shots (or 8 rifle shots within 12").

13 darklances at 750 is certainly not too shabby IMO

That sounds fine - but I'll defo be starting from the battleforce box - like i said the addition of Wyches and Scourge with Raiders to just keep the variety - either that or another box of warriors.

Can you see probles with this list - it doesn't have to be a tourney army but tat last post got m thinking
I can't rteally see the way it'll play but with 1 unit o fwarriors foot slogging and the other caharging forward in the Raider, with the reavers charging down one flank to meet up in the middle.

Are Reavers that good?

If i mixed in another Raider and some scourge - would play ok - put some wyches in a raider with the Archon? I won't get the codex for a couple of days and I'm feeling a bit impatient - but have I got the right ideas?

Well, you could go for this:
Archon
10 Warriors with blaster, splinter cannon
Raider
10 Warriors with 2 darklances
5 Reaver Jetbikes with 2 blasters incl. Succubus with power weapon
10 Wyches
Raider

Wyches need to be maxed out.
Reaver Jetbikes are a harassing unit.
It could be used to zip around a flank to pop a tank.
Scourges are one of the less useful units in the DE codex.
They are expensive and they cannot afford any casualties.

Reaver jet bikes are good at high points: 2000+ The first priority with DE is getting enough raiders squads, and enough ravagers. After that you look at getting some witch squads for some more raiders. Your HQ until you get to 1750 or higher should either be dracon, or haermonculi. Haermonculus are armed with the flame template, and put into raider squads.

The bread and butter of the DE is the raider. Your first choices should reflect the fact that you need as many as your point limit will allow. The second concern is having weapons that matter. Raiders have DL, but the squads should too. The ravagers should have disentegrators, to give infantry/light vehicle killing power. When you build up to witches, they should probably have shredders for infantry shooting, or blasters for even more tank busting. That is pretty much the core of the army. Until you get to high points, don't spend too much on HQ. The army is too fragile to waste points on them. You need every point to offset the losses you get when you are a AV 10 open top army.

Well, I'd start with the army stated above, although Sushicaddy gave a very nice army list.
Reavers are not advisable at low point games but you can reserve them for larger games.
