This is my first post here, and I am working on an imperial guard army, with minimal conversions, just switched the helmet. Some of my leaders and veterans will be converted a little more. Anyway I can not find a color scheme that I like to save my life. I have been bouncing around different ideas for months now, and I could really use some help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I kind of like the red, but am not married to the idea. Thanks for the help. Here are some pics of what I have so far.

i say that you go for a darker color, maybe black with some extreme highlights. Lots of gunmetal and silver. hope that helps

Out of all the guys in your first picture, the guy on the far right looks the best (brown cloth, red armor).

If you wanted to go with a bit more color contrast, try a slightly lighter brown cloth, black armor, and red shoulders.

I'll second that vote for the Brown with Red armor. The contrast between the red and white seems abit much, unless thats what your going for. The Red on brown looks more right...

Welcome aboard. I know the pain of picking a colour scheme for the Guard all too well!

I agree. Personally I wouldn't go with a Red/ Brown combination, especially one as dark as the one above.

As a suggestion, because you're fond of the red, you could go with the fourth option but paint the uniforms a deeper, darker red. Maybe Scab or Red Gore.
Then go with black or maybe even a metalic for the armour. Of course you might want to avoid brass so they don't accidentally end up looking too Khornate.

Do you prefer lighter colours, darker? What sort of environments do you see your IG fighting in? Would be weird for an ice world army to be bright red, imo.

The nice thing about brown Guard is that it's a relatively easy, "realistic" scheme, and the red adds a nice bit of visual punch to the unit without being overly obnoxious, given that brown contains some red tones already. Add some black and metallic for contrast, and you're done.

The white, OTOH, just doesn't work well for Guard, even as a contrast, but make it a bone or grey, and it's not too bad for armor. White is more of a Marine or Eldar color.

Wow thanks for all the great advice, I wasn't expecting anything so quickly. Here is what I came up with since I posted last, and I am pretty happy with it. I am also going to play around with the brown and red a little bit more before making my decision.

Here is my converted commander. used the sniper cloak and added a powerfist. The head is from the chaos marauder horsemen, love the stash. I will be using their heads for my veterans as well, I really like them.

here are a couple of the veterans. Again the heads are from the chaos marauder horsemen, and the bodies are the new empire greatswords. I really like these guys, but the greatswords are wicked expensive so I will probably only have one unit of them.

They will most likely be in snow because my eldar army is based in snow, but that is not necessarily where they are from.

Looking forward to more.

It is an oath we honour. It's not bad, but are you Canadian? If you're doing something RCMP-inspired, are you going for more of a "dress" uniform, or combat uniform? Is your army more of a planteary police force?

Anyhow, I think your previous version looked better.

npeircemitch wrote:They will most likely be in snow because my eldar army is based in snow, but that is not necessarily where they are from.

If it's a snow / winter theme, then you'll want an all-white over-jacket, at a minimum; possibly white pants, too, and the armor would white-wash. The problem with winter schemes is that they wash out because they're so heavily white.

Conversion-wise, you're in for a lot of work, as you'll want longcoats and covers for everything, and that doesn't seem to be where you're going with the army look.

I'd strongly avoid winter if I could.

Based on your models, you're doing more of a fall seasonal scheme, with browns and reds. It's a good color basis, and is close in theme to the winter you're using for your Eldar. I'd suggest a bit less red, so that the red that stays stands out more. Use the red (with yellow) for USMC-style sergeant & command insignia / detailing.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I tried some more browns, and I think I am going to stick with the black and red color scheme. I am in fact american, but that makes the mounties no less awesome. I am working on a full squad so hopefully I will have those finished shortly. Untill then here is the beginning of a rough rider. No idea what to do with his off arm, anyone have some thoughts?

He will eventually be on a bigger base, the lance is from the cold ones box set.

I like the idea of the dress uniform, I want them to stand out. Plus I wasn't happy with any of my snow camo patterns.

The conversions look great, especially the commander.

Where did you get the hats from?

For some reason I was put in mind of Japanese feudal warriors - don't know whether it's the helmets or the red/white colour scheme (i.e. the Japanese flag).

Japanese makes sense, I thought maybe the hats were a renaissance thing at first.

The hats are from the bretonnian men at arms, and I agree, they do look a little Japanese. I think the red helps that. Here is my work so far on the first squad. I like the colors so far.

Also subtle conversion work on the squad leader modeling him with a pointing power sword. Just a hand and weapon swap.

And this is the guy I will be using as a priest. No conversion work, but perhaps my favorite GW model after Maugan Ra. This will be my reward for finishing 2 troops and a command, which with the guard will be like a bajillion models.

Neat conversions. I like the commander, reminds me of mine. I too used the sniper cloak and power fist.

About the paint scheme. I was thinking of having a similiar scheme, with red armour, some months ago.
Here's a rough discription of how it looked like:
Red Gore armour
Bleached Bone helmet
Codex Grey fatigues
Chaos Black + Boltgun Metal weapon(s)

It actually looked pretty good, but I thought red was a too bright colour for guards, it seemed more Eldar-y to me.
But if you use a darker colour, it might look good.
Just sharing my thoughts.

Again thanks for all the help so far, I have decided on the red and black color scheme for the guardsmen. I haven't posted in a couple of days while I was away. I am now trying to think of a color scheme for the tanks. The base will be a simple snow pattern, you can see it on a couple of the models already. I am not sure I want to go with a snow camo pattern for the tanks, and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

All good, though, if you're going red & black, be sure to throw some Devlan Mud over the red...

Thanks for the tip. Could you expand a little. The first time I washed it with black, why switch to brown? I have really just started experimenting with washes, this is the first army I have done them on.

You can wash with both, but brown will give more color depth over red.

Sorry for the delay on this thread, but I became very distracted. I had a big apocalypse battle with my eldar to get ready for, including making the table and terrain. If you are interested, here are some pictures of that. We also played a small game of planet strike.
