I have a ork army and am looking at creating a more mechanized, low model count, very shooty army.

IG seems to do this very well. Am I overlooking other armies? I would like to only bring infantry models onto the table when their transports are destroyed if possible.

You are not overlooking other armies. IG is the best of overwhelming thier opponant in armor goodness. At close to $50 USD a pop for each tank it will make any gamer whince when the FLGS owner rattles off the three or four figure bill that are will cost you (he needs to pay for his pron somehow).
