Would a first and tenth company still work in 5th edition? It was a pretty decent army in 4th, but I wonder if it's competitive in 5th.
What do you guys think? Can scouts be used effectively for objectives by themselves?

Edit: Also, what about the reverse version with DA? You guys think that would work at all? Maybe that would work better?

"There is no limit to the human spirit, but sometimes I wish there was."
Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

The Connoisseur of Crap.
Knowing is half the battle. But it is only half. Execution...application...performance...now that is the other half.

Surprised there's no replies. No one has any comments to make?

Scouts lost a lot of their appeal in the new codex.

Sure, they're scoring, but as a shooty unit that's left behind to guard an objective, their reduced BS, combined with the reduced effectiveness of sniper weapons in general, means that they're not much of a threat.

Similarly, in an assault role, WS3 isn't too much of a hindrance, but they're just not that impressive.

I have a friend who runs a 10th&dread list, and against an unsuspecting opponent, it has some game (storms run in dropping off scouts for a 1st turn charge, and landing podding dreads nearby), but against anyone who has seen it before of sniffs out what it's trying to do, it's easily defeated by holding everything in reserve.

Scouts just don't last long enough to be your scoring units, IMHO.

Play Dark Angels.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

3 Terminator Squads w/ Th and SS 1200 points
Shrike 210
3 Squads of 9 Scouts w/ Powerfists sgt. 142
1 10 man Squad w. out 130

Is absolutely hilarious to play

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

One of the local marine players use 10 strong scout squads as his troops choices.
Doing so leaves a fare bit of points for other, more hard hitting units.
They are often transported about by the Devastator's rhinos.
He normally fields an assault unit and a sniper unit for his core.

play planetstrike and termies are scoring.

Scouts are nice for holding objectives but don't underestimate them. five shooty scouts in a Landspeeder storm can pulp any thing that hasn't got a decent armor save. don't forget assaulty scouts, if they assault the turn they disembark from a LSS the enemy has -2 leadership for the remainder of turn. true 5 scouts with 3 attacks each might not kill much, combine them with somthing that can dominate in CC (assault squad, termies) and force a leadership test at minus alot depending on how much you won the combat by.

scouts can pulp t'au in CC

Even though Hollismason's post is a bit tongue-in-cheek, don't overlook the key point.

If you put Shrike into a scout/termie list, all the scouts and terminators get fleet. The terminators can infiltrate if they're with shrike. So you can build an army with a ton of infiltrating, fleeting, first-turn-charging and/or outflanking units.

With proper support, it could work.
