It's not. It's the White Dwarf dressed in an orange space suit with a servo-arm holding up the Black Gobbo dressed as a "Grey" alien. It's Halloween at GW.

Squats? SQUATS!? THERE'S NO SUCH THING! THERE NEVER WAS! Stop imagining things or the Inquisition will be forced to teach you not to ask questions that border on Heresy. And their teaching methods are very unpleasant.

You have been warned.

Seriously though, that would be a cool Squats mini. I guess if nothing else, it'll appeal to the rich gamers that can afford to buy a box of Dwarves and a box of Guardsmen, and convert the Dwarves into Squats, and then do a "Counts As" list off of the Guard 'Dex.

Of course, like I said, they never existed...

Ever.

I like the idea, the older models are just goofy and too cartoony. But if they started to look like that handsome chap. They'd be awesome, I think dwarves go unoticed too much nowadays by nerds like us.

Now if they brought Hrud in as space skaven, Id be all over that like cankles on a fat chick!!! Skaven are just too spiffy to leave em just in WHFB.

Whoa you guys are taking me wrong. I dont hate DWARVES. I actually LOVE dwarves (Gimli for the friggin WIN. Or Professor Aurturo whatever) But SQUATS are just redonkulous. Now if they were in the Orks army, they would have high explosives strapped to their chests and punted at the enemies like footballs.

And just the the hell of it.

Actually before he did the lord of the rings movies, Gimli made some appearances in GW codexes, alas they were never released. But if you dig really really really hard you can still find some. Only a few pictures survived GW's exterminatus of the squats, like this one:

Would anyone like to field an ALL ratling army? Im not talking just snipers. I mean ratlings with heavy weapons, and ratling troops with bolt guns. Speaking of, that leads me to another WTF. The Squats HAD bolters?!?! The rounds for those guns are the size of the squats arm for goodness sake.

Yeah, slapped that together in paint real fast TBH. I like the whole ratling army idea too. You keep coming up with non-serious ideas I like.

Ratlings: "FOR THE SHIREerrrrrr......... FOR THE EMPORER!!!!"

If they actually did redo the squats, they'd need technology more advanced than the tau, not some archaic bolters. I also imagine they'd have a high base toughness like 5. I've never seen any squat rules homebrew or official however. What I did see was a guy at my FLGS playing some homebrew squats, didnt check out his rules though. He had some spiffy conversions.

But High Elves, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Ogres, Halflings, Orks and Daemons in space is completely fine?

They should at least release the Demiurg if the Squats name and fluff was not good enough. Their the closest things to Dwarves in Space now-a-Days.

I keep thinking about it, but I can't seem to think of a way to make "Dwarves in space" work without it being too silly. (it does not compute :S ) (I mean, orks are silly...but only so much, especially when da' boyz is rokketing towards ya on red trukks intent on smashin' yer face in!)

And since when are there space wood elves?

Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

I know better than to get involved in these discussions, but I simply can't help myself.

*sigh*....so much needless Squat hate out there.
We've all seen the arguments before. Some of them are very lame indeed. (thanks for beating me to debunking one of the most foolish ones, Obsidian) I have always felt that much of the hostility toward Squats is not based upon a genuine sincerely held personal opinion, but on a sort of band wagon phenomenon much akin to what you see with school kids. Ie "All the cool kids think that such and such band sucks, so it must suck!". Likewise over the years I've run across many people who have never seen a Squat model up close in their lives who jump on the Squat hater wagon. It's the "GW dropped them, so Squats must suck!" mentality in action. To see this attitude pop up here at Dakka is suprising. I came to expect it at Warseer, were the number of vacant eyed GW fanboys is much higher. (Warseer seems to have gotten the majorty of the kiddies from the official GW forums when they closed a few years back) Fewer Dakkaites seem to have drank the GW koolaid that deeply.

This is not the only reason for Squat hate of course. But its surely one of the major ones.

To those who have made the claim that "Squats are silly" I have a news flash: the whole game was silly when Squats were first created. Pop on Ebay and get yourself a copy of the original RT book. (or download it through a file sharing service as original copies can be quite expensive these day) Read it from cover to cover and enjoy the laughs. Yes, the Grim dark existed back then and in some ways was quite a bit darker than it is today, but there was also a healthy dose of parody under the surface. Just look at the famous "Bitter Men" charicatures of the GW staff on the last page of the RT book. That sets the tone for the whole original 40k universe. Much of that is gone now of course (something I have mixed feelngs about). Had the GW studio not been too lazy to properly develop the Squats as they did other races (the real underlying message of JJ's famous "why we ditched the Squats post) the "silly" factor would no doubt have left them as well.

(I mean, orks are silly...but only so much, especially when da' boyz is rokketing towards ya on red trukks intent on smashin' yer face in!)

Couldn't you say the same thing about Squats too? Yeah, that dumpy little guy is cute...until he cuts you in two with a power axe or melts you with a conversion beamer!

But I would contend that they "silliness" factor is a bit exagerated. Read through the fluff acompanying the Squat army list from the 40k Compendium (aka the Red Book). There is not much "silly" in there. Likewise pop over to this site: http://www.polycon.org/squats/ Browse through the listings and tell me how many actual "silly" miniatures you see. (ok, ok, the Squat Pirate models are silly. I'll give you that. But the whole Space Pirate range was OTT). Now compare these to the feel of the WFB Dwarf range that is contemporary with the Squats. (pop over to "Stuff of legends" and look at the later "C series" releases for a reference.) Are they really any different? Are they really all that differrent in feel from today's Dwarf miniatures?

And finally, yes that is a nice figure in the OP. I would obtain one for my own Squat army, but I'm not about to buy a subscription to GW's propaganda rag AND pay 15$ to get it. In a years time I'll probabaly be able to get one on Ebay with a crappy little kid paint job I can strip for a decent price.

Oh we're still out there. We just get shuffled to the back of stores and convienantly removed from coverage of tournements. (that's no exageration....the story of the wonderful converted Chaos Squat army that won the Baltimore GT earlier in the decade and then was completely left out of the official GW coverage of the event is well known)

I expect the release of the new Space Wolf codex will see un upsurge in new Squat army conversions. I certainly plan on using it for my existing original model Squat army.

One way I feel that the whole Squat problem could have been solved easily keeping old gamers happy and at little cost to GW with out changing the new Fluff is creating a series of Hobbyist Codex’s. These would be semi-official dexs with rule sets and maybe a limited set of model releases, but leaves the bulk of the models up for the player to convert themselves (with squats if you wanted to make more up to date Squats GW would make more money 1 dwarf box set + 1 Imperial guard box). They could name than Squat Grudge or Vendetta forces traveling in communes fighting as Mercs or banding together in a single force to right a wrong that befell them as some point. Change their Hatred to Orks to 'Nids.

In the same Series you could release Kroot Mercs, Genestealer Cults, Loyalist and Chaos Beastmen, Exodite Eldar and others that the older gamers could name you. In other words all the armies that aren’t main-stream but still hold conversion opportunities for GW models and would help enhance the Fluff and background of the 40K Universe.

When I say make them Semi-Official I mean leave it up to individual tournaments to decide how to use them in other words: You can't, you can or you can as long as X% of the models are GW conversions.

There are probably some faults with this idea but it’s a start.

Squats take a lot of critisism for their crappy models but seriously, look at any early 90's citatel figs and they all look like garbage.

I collected orks at the time but I still have a few old school minis laying around and they just can't stack up with the models of today.

I like space dwarves but I know we'll never see them again. I can still cherish my old squat bikers though.

As long as they're not MEQ's and have actually got something to them, I'm down for squats coming back; that means the Demiurg for Tau.

Looking at their old models though, they just look like SM with lasguns and IG armor. We already have the opposite (SoB) and with space wolves getting their own PAGE of products, I don't want to see anything else remotely related to space marines for a long, long time.

Trench Raider speaks the truth. No point in quoting bits cos he's right through and through.

I intend to use my squats (that I've owned for twenty odd years) as IG in fifth and update them (to make them actually viable) in RT. This has taken some serious stripping and converting but I'm starting to get there. (The models weren't brilliant and did need a fair bit of work to make them anywhere near reasonable to field against modern sculpts).

The argument that they were stupid isn't laudable.....the whole game was daft back then. And that's kind of my point.......it's a game. If it's not fun or appealing it's not worth playing. IMO I think the Tau are slightly odd because they are blatantly a ploy to get Anime/mecha loving people to convert to 40K but i don't think that's wrong if that's what you like (one of my best friends plays Tau and I love some of the models).

Its strange because I've met quite a few people who claim to hate squats but have never seen/touched an actual model. I've even shown some bits of my force and they've changed direction and told me how cool they are. There's nothing wrong with having an opinion as long as it's your own (and not a stupid one ).

The best thing I've experienced is showing a ten year old in a local GW my sentinel and him saying "wow that's really cool..OH my god there's a dwarf in there!!!" It was nice to meet someone who hadn't already formed an opinion based on hearsay and second/third/twentieth hand rantings.
