I hav to know I've just ordered one!

You may want to hold off on buying alot of Tyranids as they are getting ready to get a new codex.

Point wise I don't have the codex so I have no idea. It would be hard to tell with the differant weapon option you have to take for Warriors, and the Carnifex.

As for Tyranids, more Gaunts, Genestealers, and a Hive Tyrant.

Hive tyrants are awesome, as are fexes. But after that what type of list you want to play will determine what you buy.

And due to the variations in biomorphs there is no specific points size to the battle force. It can vary. Around the 500 or 600 point mark (can be less, can be a lot more).

I would just focus on getting that battleforce painted up, then work on getting some basic boxes of gaunts. The new codex is coming in January, and I doubt the basic forms of gaunts will see any changes that you'll have to rectify in the future.

Just dont buy any special units, and magnetize the monstrous creatures.

The tyranid models are plastic and awesome already. Warriors, gaunts, and genestealers are probably not going to change anyways, so I say stick to those. By painting those alone youll make up 95% of the models.

A tyranid battleforce can probably get you up to around 500-700 points, depending how they're ran.

As for what to buy, like others said, hold out. if you wanna get some now, magnetize the carnis and get a couple of hive tyrants.

Yeah good for about three months. That's definetley time to get accustomed to an army. Good luck on your vicious little horde.
