"The thrill of victory and the Agony of defeat."

The very idea of this has spawned TFG and WAAC. But thats not the point. Rarely do we get a choice in how the loss occurs. Instead we get to choose how to deal with the loss. This thread's point is if you actually had a choice in how the loss occurs (this is discounting playing badly as a choice ie: running off the board etc).

So your gonna lose. How would you like your loss to be?

I would honestly want record rolls with multiple template barrages from IG just to wipe 80% of my army right off the board. I do not want a single survivor. Spectacular explosions would be the way to go.

Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds." ~ HK-47

It doesn't really matter to me so long as both I and my opponent had a fun and eventful game. Though I think my most hilarious loss in the short time I have been Wargaming would have been last weekend at Games Workshop.

I had armed my Space Marine sergeant with a Teleport Homer, as it is the only way you could ever get me to deepstrike any units (I've seen some pretty horrible losses through deepstriking) And I was assured that my terminator squad supported by Marneus Calgar (a squad of a total of 665 points in a 1500 point game) would land without any difficulty, The second turn came and I rolled for reserves, the roll was too low and we continued, the third turn came, by this time my opponent had began doing some real damage to my army. However I knew once Calgar and his squad arrived they would turn the tide of the battle.

My half of the turn came and most of my forces were already in assault, amazingly, my 66 point sergeant carrying the teleport homer was still outside of combat and I decided to fire his plasma pistol before he engaged. I fired and rolled a 1, and failed his armor save. The sergeant decked out with every possible upgrade I could give him had fallen, and even worse, my teleport homer had fallen with him.

The fourth turn came, and by this time my opponent had picked off my forces 1 by 1 as almost half of my point value in models were still in reserve. The only hope I had was for Calgar's squad to arrive and get some lucky rolls. My half of the turn came and I rolled for reserves, finally Calgar had landed. Unfortunately he had scattered into difficult terrain and I had rolled a 1 on the mishap table, killing 665 points worth of models. Ending in a crushing, but extremely amusing defeat.

Anyway, this is how I like to lose, with a hilarious, crushing defeat.

My favorite loss is only possible in WHFB, in which units can 'panic' and run away if nearby units panic.

NOTE: This actually happened to me.

So, one little unit of skinks shoots up my RxB warriors (last DE armybook). They fail their Ld. check. Units nearby test for panic. They fail. My entire army except for a unit of Witch Elves and one Noble on chariot ran off the board, after a single shooting phase. Disastrously bad rolls. We decided that my elves apparently thought they were going to be fighting Chaos in the north, and just went the wrong direction. When they realized that, darnit, this is LUSTRIA! they hightailed it back north.

My favorite way to lose in 40K...

I'd have to go with... plain old getting out-played in a fairly close match. I'd like to feel like I had a shot at winning until the last couple of turns, when my opponent makes some really smart moves and snatches it away. Games I can learn from.

its all I can do to stop myself from yelling at my opponent sometimes.

in tournaments, when they hold ONE unit of deepstrikers or outflanking jetbikes in reserve, and they roll poorly for it to come in, and it comes in bottom of turn 5, and just lands 2" away from my objective, causing me to draw the match instead of win the match, it really is all I can do to not scream at the dirty git for pulling something like that. its not like I had a chance to stop it ><

I hate it when I lose because I made mistakes, but I love it when I lose and my opponent played flawlessly.

Sometimes these things can coincide....

Chancy losses/wins just make me laugh, what can you do if the dice doesn't favor you? I just try to shrug it off, nothing I can do about it. (Edit: And I love to see people get gutsy with their deep strikes, if they mishap, awesome, I win, thanks for the killpoint. if they land dead on, makes a cool story to tell later)

I've had my entire army gunned down in turn two (Well, the survivors were gunned down. The reserves who deep-struck either missed the table and died or landed on another unit and died). Total time for the game was 27 1/2 minutes.

My opponent was dumbstruck and sympathised. I bought him a beer. We waited for the round to finish and went to our next games. I didn't even come last - 3rd last (I couldn't even fail properly).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

( Don´t intend to derail but have to comment on this. )
. Shadowsword? Who cares abot puny tanks? Last year during an Apo battle the Chaos forces had a Warhound Titan defending two bridges. On the frst turn our Marine player dropped 10+ Drop Pods full of troops all around the Titan and its supporting Chaos infantry. So far so good. Then the IG player started blasting at the Titan with his Tank Company and caused a critical hit. The resulting nuclear explosion wiped out 100+ models ( both friend and foe ). Almost a whole Marine Company had been wiped out in less than 3 minutes of play.

Carry on.

My favourite loss would to be a last man mono-et-mono style between two survivors.

This actually happened a couple of weeks ago.

Apart from my last Assualt Serge with Power Fist, and his Sternguard with Power Fist, all that was left was an Immobilzed vindicator of his.
I charged into combat against him and we both took each other out. He won by 1 kill point though.

It was worth it IMHO.

An even funnier loss was when 3 seperate Vortex grenades ran rampamnt through my army in an Apoc game. Turn 2. I loled hard at myself. They were ALL dead by turn 3. (And I had been trying to run away from it). Two of the grenades were from my own side.

That's pretty entertaining. The best I have done was my SAG was a double 6 but scattered right on top of the mek. The mek was on the bottom level of a structrure firing out of the window, 1-2 inches above him and around him was a squad of looters and the objective.

After the laughing was over with we removed both units, the objective and the building

My favorite loss was during the 'Ard Boyz Semi Finals.
I played against another Ork player that had played for 13 years.
Just by his army and the first turn I new I was out classed and had alot more experience against me.

I still played normally, but I learned all that I could. It was great!! We talked and had a good time. He showed me tactics and good Ork strategies.

I think best losses are when it's a good game and a learning experience.

Or when the game gets so horribly absurd ( bad rolls, scatter, units from both sides obliterated by one blast template) that both players are laughing with insanity.

There's lots of ways to lose and still have a laugh. My favourite is a hard fought loss that was close. But next to that is losing but taking down something I have decided HAS TO DIE with massive causulties. And of course, sometimes getting splatted is hilarious. I lost 56 orks to one round of shooting in a game against lash chaos, and it was hilarious. Another game, with 3rd ed orks, all my rokkits pinged off an imperial armoured column, while not a single ordinance blast scattered for the imperials.
And another time, one of my grot gun crew put the only wound on a super amped up daemon prince from 3.5 Chaos.

Tactical genius Hur Hur Hur. .

To get back on topic, my favourite way to lose is probably to get wiped out completly, but still have put in a tight game. That way, I know that I still gave it my best shot, but was still defeated by a much wiser opponent than I.

My favorite was battling my buddy's Tyranids. After a game of horrendously bad rolls (I actually had a tactical squad roll ten 1's at one point. Yes, ten 1's.) we were down to our last each. I, my Captain with 1 Wound left, him a Genestealer. I had somehow managed to destroy all but one Genestealer with my shooting before his bugs got into CC and tore my marines up.

We meet in CC and for 4 turns... 4 turns no one lands a single hit.

FINALLY his Genestealer lands a lucky 6 and pastes my Commander. We laughed for about 5 minutes, and then walked down the street to the pub for a couple rounds of Guinness

I like to do whatever i can even when its obvious i'm gonna lose. Perfect example, doubles tourny it was my orks and my friends marines vs ig/marines the mission was wierd so one player on each team had to start in reserve so ig sets up his russes and heavy bolter teams and proceeds to shell the gak out of me now we got destroyed, but i managed to kill 3 termies and still lost by 6 wounds so i just stand there going... ok i need snake eyes... well at least i have two rolls for it... first roll ... wait... WHAT?! I was laughing for literally 10 minutes we get back into it, and the next turn, marines roll horribly and lose by one they actually fail the moral check and fall back, i couldn't believe what just happened and as i pursued the fleeing termies i was almost completely shot to death. Its just the feeling that i did as much damage as possible even if i knew i would lose that makes the loss ok.

I'm cool with a loss when it comes down to one roll of the dice. An example of this was at a Fantasy tourney years ago. I was playing a guy who was very experienced and the game was pretty close. I was really thinking through my moves and attacks, but as the game winded down it came to one leadership test. I failed by one and I lost a unit, the standard, and a character. It ended up being enough pts to give him the win, but it was cool because he was really friendly throughout the game and congratulated me for such a close game (and in a way that wasn't patronizing).

I also don't mind losing if my opponent is a really nice person. Even if I make a ton of bonehead moves and screw myself, if my opponent is genuinely nice (and I will know if he/she is) then I can appreciate our game for what it was.

Tryed 1 man army tactic(in theory). I have read somewhere that in theory a marine with jumpack can take a single army by just jumping from model to model.Really stupid.

I'm fine with loosing as long as both my opponent and I have had a good, fun game at the end of it. One of my most regular opponents plays Deathwing, which proves a constant problem to my Necrons (mainly to do with my lack of AP2 weapons, and his complete inability to roll 1's for anything except leadership tests). But it's okay at the end of the day, 'cos even if I get pasted and only manage to kill 1 tactical squad and a couple of terminators, we'll both have had fun =)
