Welcome,

I recently purchased the Dark Elf Battalion set and have started assembling the models.

I finished 12 warriors and am now concerned whether i should build crossbowmen or just make the whole batch into warriors.

My main opponants will be Lizardmen, Dwarves, Ogre Kingdoms and Beastmen.

DE rxbow-men are really a good deal and are pretty useful regardless of who you're facing (that AP on the shots makes it really good even at S3).

Warriors are only really worthwhile if you plan on sacrificing them to a sorceress.

I started with the batt box myself, and have since regretted building spearmen- I don't use them. I like two blocks of 10 Xbows to camp out and shoot at targets of opportunity- and to secure my table quarters- not bad for 200 points of dudes. They can help protect your Reaper Crossbows if need be- they are better in combat than most light cav and skirmishers which are the main threat to siege engines.

Other than that spearmen aren't a great choice when compared to how good Dark Riders and crossbowmen are. If you need a battery for your sacrificial dagger run them in a small block with no shields and keep them out fo combat with anything scary (you wouldn't want you sorc in combat anyway, right?).

Dark Elf core is nothing terrific compared to their special and rare choices so you don't want a ton of points sunk in here. Get your minimum core- grab a couple 5 man harpy squads for march blocking/ war machine hunting and move along to the fun stuff like Black Guards, Shades, Hydras and suclike!

I think the only time spear men might be worth their points versus crossbow men would be if you had a Cauldron of Blood to use on them, and then you should smack your self for not using it on Cold One Knights, who are just scarey when their in range of one.

I made loads of spearelves when I stated my DE. mistake.

XBows are far better.

Of course, it depends on the build of your army, you may want an all out assault force.

Still good to have xbows defending your flanks, or on a hill!
