Indeed, what the hell was GW thinking? They really should have put out a plastic kit for the cavalry, instead of producing one expensive metal model that can't be converted. You can't even just leave Canis off the thing because he's actually attached to the body, I thought they didn't even do that crap anymore and left the riders separate!
Canis = fail. You're going to see a lot of Space Wolves riding to battle on those horrid-looking plastic Chaos hounds...

This is the character Canis Wolfborn, right? Aren't all of GWs special characters metal models?
I would expect that GW will eventually release a plastic version for the standard Thunderwolf unit, maybe in a seperate wave of releases.

Well i feel that Mr Wolfborn looks like a bit of a pleb so I wasnt going to bother with him anyway! Although the vast majority of the Wolf pack sprue looks good, personally I don't like the lack of other special weapons or standard space marine parts...

Yeah, maybe. In a year. If there is another wave. I'm still waiting for them to do second waves for all their other releases besides Orks and SM.

Most of the people (not on this thread only) complaining about this model dont even play SW. Just get over it already. The model looks great, who cares if its a one peice or 2? Canis looks great, the wolf looks ok,
If your really that worried about the lack of range for the cavelry models look at dedicated SW forums such as the one on B&C where they have plenty of ideas for cheaper alternatives.

Most of the people (not on this thread only) complaining about this model dont even play SW.
And what does that have to do with anything? You're saying the only ones allowed to complain are people with Space Wolf armies of their own?
I bet you're also one of those types who think you're not allowed to criticize a film unless you've also directed a major motion picture yourself.
Just get over it already.
...why? The model hasn't stopped being gak yet, and GW still expects me to pay $45 for it. And depending on what type of army you're running, they expect you to pay $45 up to nine times or more.
The model looks great
The only model that could possibly surpass it is Nagash!
who cares if its a one peice or 2?
...um...everyone who wants a thunderwolf without Canis attached?
Honestly though, you don't understand why this could be a problem for anyone? Really? You have thunderwolf mounts available to several characters (and their own codex entry), and the only model GW has given you to represent them is an expensive special character that can't be separated from the mount without doing some serious damage, that also happens to look like a "special needs" wolf...err, "wolf", since it doesn't really look like a wolf to me, it looks more like a Siberian husky.
Not that there's anything wrong with them, I've always wanted a dog like that myself, but the cute puppy-dog look just doesn't work for this model...the background makes these things sound like dangerous beasts that are damn near impossible to control, the model looks like he'll roll over and let you rub his belly.
Canis looks great, the wolf looks ok,
Canis himself is alright, though I do still wonder how the hell you grip the reins with fething lightning claws, but it's not the first design WTF GW's ever made. The "wolf" is fail, though.
If your really that worried about the lack of range for the cavelry models look at dedicated SW forums such as the one on B&C where they have plenty of ideas for cheaper alternatives.
Yeah, I've seen the Chaos warhound conversion, and they look ridiculous in my opinion. I can't field something like that and keep a straight face. The Goblin wolf mounts are also too small (and they make better Fenrisian wolves anyway). Other than that, there is no substitute in the GW range. I saw someone say they planned to use bikes with wolf pelts as "counts as" thunderwolf cavalry, but I bet you anything a lot of people will take issue with that since bikes are another entry...
I honestly think GW just wants everyone to buy a dozen Canis models. Either that or they're stupid and didn't realize thunderwolf cavalry would actually be all that popular.
And just a disclaimer here, this is all my opinion.

Beef, just because we don't play Woofs doesn't mean that we don't have a right to comment about it.
Feel free to "comment" all you like. But it does not directly affect you how expensive or ugly the models are if you dont play wolves. Its not thened of the world for you (not literally you BrookM) so saying things like you (once again not you or anybody in particular) wont pay whatever it costs for something is a moot point. As SW players will pay and buy the ugly models. And most of the feedback I have seen from "actual" SW players is that the model is reasonable. And thats what counts as far as GW are concerned.

@beef-If you are going to comment only the things you have bought or collect its your choice as is others to comment something that is part of their hobby. This nonsense that only wolf players are entitled comment... or their comments are somewhat more credible is load of bollocks mate... People talk and express opinions in a free way, about what they want... buying or having it in their collections has nothing to do with credibility or credible opinions.... By the contrary if your going to be realistic about it a hardcore fan opinion is somewhat more biased.
Also by that order of ideas you should not comment peoples posts because...errrr you dont know them.

I did say its their choice, Try reading my post mate. what I said was its not the end of the world for non SW players if the model looks crap. I agree with R3con that the wolf looks like a fat cat rather than a wolf as the face is kind of stunted and squashed.

GW can hope people will buy loads of the canis model to bucther the thunderwolf for cavelry But there are better option out there. no not the goblim or doom wolves as they are to small and a marine on the back of that just looks stoopid. There are other option from other miniture companies like reaper and others. Some are expensive option in their own right but they do look more savage and wolflike.

Exactly. There are alternatives. My ugly biovore model problem is solved simply with a razor saw, a biovore and a tyrant guard. I'd go to extremes to make a good looking biovore, and so should others when it comes to thunderwolf cavalry, if you think they are so important. If you can't make them, at least stop complaining. It is as simple as this; 'I don't like Canis, but that is just IMO', then don't argue when someone says they like it. Am I getting through to anyone, besides the fact that I should have just stood down?

Canis' suckitude directly relates to everyone, regardless of if they play wolves or not. If you play wolves, then it sucks because it will be tough to convert TWC from him. If you don't play wolves, then it sucks because everytime you square across the table from a Wolf player, you will be facing either multiple badly converted Canis models, or a horrible modelling kitbash of some other monstrosity (like pastic marines riding plastic wolves, check Stelek's out...).
So I'd say it concerns us all. Also, we can all let GW know that we do not like cavalry models with the rider and mount as one peice, because it makes conversions damn near impossible. (It also doesn't make sense from a sales perspective, as without a suitable substitute, this model would be a shoe in for TWC, and players would definetely buy them, but alas it is not the case, and now any wolf player need only buy 1 Canis model ever.)
So, stop being a fanboy and get real.

Actually white dragon think about what you just said for a minute.
Canis sucking does not affect you or any other players facing badly converted thunderwolves any more than the countless other bad model or bad conversion out there. But be real thats sound a bit snobbish. "oh it affects people who are playing against canis due to how craptastic the model/conversions look" please that just comes across as lame and a bit snobbish.
As for the sales perspective a metal one pose Canis mount (without canis) would still be quite expensive and just as lame looking. If anything canis draws attention away from the wolf mount. At $45 for the whole thing without canis it would still be at the very cheapest $30. For that you can get better looking wolf mounts from other gaming systems. So your point about sales and GW once not using their loaf is defunct.
What is a fanboy? Personnaly I have played wolves since 2nd and they are and always have been my army of choice. I relise some of themodels are not that great without other people telling me that. If somebody wants to buy the model they will. If they have the skill they will convert something for use as Kanis or thunderwolf mounts. Either way its our loss or gains as SW players.
So once agains how does it actually affect non SW players> Answers on the back of a post card to the usual address

@ sidstyler
DO you play wolves?
Once again I ask, why the feth does that matter?
Not yet, no. I'm not a big fan of Marines in general, but I've been mulling over the idea of doing an army of them for a while now. For the longest time I wanted Salamanders, even had a unit of terminators with FW pads, but I lost interest when suddenly everyone was walking around with Vulkan armies of their own, and GW fethed with their fluff for no reason and made them drow with red eyes. Space Wolves have always been the second coolest chapter in my opinion, because I love the whole viking barbarian thing for one, and they're so unlike regular Marines they're practically a different army. Space Hulk got me interested in Blood Angels a bit, and my brother has been trying to push me in that direction if I end up doing Marines of my own.
If there was a thunderwolf cavalry kit I'd probably be more inclined to start Space Wolves, there's a Logan Grimnar build floating around with wolf guard and TWC that I kinda like. But like I said, and others have pointed out as well, it doesn't fething matter if I play Space Wolves or not, I'm just as involved in this hobby as you or anyone else and I'm allowed to voice my opinion on sculpts whether I happen to collect the army they belong to or not. The idea that the Canis model "doesn't affect me personally" so I have no right to complain is, frankly, bs.
Only jackass's would take issue with sw bikes converted to represent thunderwolf riders.
Now that I agree with. But personally I think the rest of your argument is crap. Yes, you're right, I don't have to buy Canis and I sure as hell won't be doing so. But personally I think it's irritating since, while I don't have a SW army, I could potentially start one, and the lack of a suitable TWC substitute or actual kit makes it hard for me to want to collect them. So in that way it does affect me, it puts me off wanting to do a SW army.
By the way, if you ever post about anything but Space Wolves, then you're a hypocrite. Since obviously nothing else on this website will pertain to you and so you're not allowed to have an opinion on it.

I just think it's kinda ignorant...it's also like saying you can't call the Dark Eldar line gak if you don't have an army of them.
That would mean that me and every single other person who listed the crap models as the only thing holding us back were in the wrong, and our opinions meant nothing because we don't play Dark Eldar.

OK, now you both are missing the main point. You're both right, in a few ways. Granted even though we all know the model is ugly and causes trouble during conversions, SW players have a genuine complaint, as it then affects what their army looks like and can do. But most other people are complaining about it stopping them from collecting SW. One word. Biovore. Improvise dammit.

All are potential buyers so all have legit complaints/comments. I even go a step further and say even if you dont know the hobby and never on this world will get miniatures you can also complain how something is simply butt ugly or not...
If I go to a art expo look at a painting and dont like it ,so I will not buy it, Im less credible to express opinions than, say the guy next door who has a full collection of that painter?
I go to Toysrus look at a toy for my kid and dont like its looks, so I say mehhhh will not buy this, its ugly!... But the guy that has full collection of those kind of toys, is some way more legitimised to comment/complain?
Its just plain nonsense.
As for Improvise comment eheheheh you are many miles away in my case
