NUTS! from Two Hour Wargames is a solid skirmish WWII game.

They have the base ruleset, Chain Reaction, free to download from their site.

Also, I have been hearing about a ruleset from Too Fat Lardies. I Ain't Been Shot, Mum.

Also you can just use the Necromunda Ruleset and hammer out which rules rep each countries troops.

For models, there are Artizan, Bolt Action, Old Glory, and many more. Artizan remind me the most of GW stuff.

I have played NUTS! quite a few times. I think it runs best when you have 1 on 1.

But we managed to have an 8 person game that spanned two weeks. The Americans invading and unknown numbers and location of Germans defending.

If you ever played 40k KillTeam, we basically ran the Germans as Goon Squads against 5 American squads and a squad of French Partisans (as US Infantry).

I usually use a German Infantry squad.

I have Artizan stuff. Great Coats and Late War Smocks for a semi-coherent look. Also, I was thinking of the woods in Bastogne from Band of Brothers when I was shopping for them.

Vs the Germans I have a couple squads of US infantry with Great Coats.

I picked up packs of AT weapons, BARs and Carbines, as well as a PaK-40(?). all from Artizan.

Vehicles are not necessary, but...

I got a few 1/48 vehicles as well. New Millenium or 21st Century Games prepainted models from Wal-Mart. I'm pretty sure they are Chinese copies of Tamiya stuff that look great.

I have a 1/48 Tamiya Protze Truck and plan to get the new Tamiya 251 Halftrack. I also found a diecast jeep. I'm gonna build a gun mount for that.

"Disposable Heroes & Coffin For Seven Brothers" (or simply "Disposable Heroes" for short) is another excellent squad-based rule set.

Although it's sometimes criticized for being too "bloody", this means that the gameplay is fast and furious... very much like Mordheim/Necromunda!

i agree use disposable heros! its easy the rules make a lot of sense . use a lot of terrain because like in real life machine guns rule the feild! i did american paras and germans in 28 . and im getting ready to do them in 20mm - 1/72 . reason being a company called vailant minatures available at the thewarstore.com sells 4 boxes ( german , german ss , americans and british infantry ) theres about 64 guys in each box . good quailty muti peice models for about $16.00 a box . but the main reason is every ww2 vechile is made in 1/72 scale prepainted !!! 1/48 - 1/56 vechicles for 28 mm are harder to find and more pricey . and definetly check out disposable heros !!also available from the thewarstore.com. happy gaming

Another vote for DH.

It is a great system. Simple to use but offers up great gaming experience. Lots of choices and decision making.

Rules are not poorly written but some things are unclear or left you (hoping for a codified rules update someday) however the game designers are very active on their Iron Ivan Yahoo group and usually get you an answer in a short time.

We're playing a homebrew campaign using DH rules 1944 in Northern Italy. Lots of fun.

Highly highly recommend the rules!

Personally, if you want to do platoon sized actions I would go with Force-on-Force from AAG.

They allow real world tactics to be used on the tabletop, are very fast and fluid and give a tense and exciting game.

The rulebook even has a Bulge scenario in it.
