Have there been any tactics uncovered that are particularly effective? I ask because my next battle will be against SW (using regular SM) and I don't have the codex to try and pick it apart (buying it isn't really an option right now).

They are basically marines that want to assault you so treat them like Black Templars and treat Grey Hunters like Plain CSM.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

They're Chaos Space Marines with low leadership that are capable of creating both ultra-shooty gunline armies and fast assault armies filled with cavalry and beasts. They also have some of the best anti-psychic defenses in the game, on par with Eldar. SWs can create several very strong Take-All-Comers lists with few weaknesses to exploit. If there's one advantage that you should seek to actively exploit, it's their relatively low leadership (8).

They can also field a Deathwing style army.

Don't be to worried about JotWW as overall its underwhelming.

Lightning arc tho is kind of brutal.

Take Sternguard w/ meltas they wtfbbq own most everything he could put out.

thunderwolf Calvary are not that great when facing 15 wounds from hellfire.

Lightning Claws Lightning Claws Lightning Claws.

Say it again. Lightning Claw terms are really effective against them.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

I've got a Redeemer Flamestorm cannon already primed for my first Anti-SW match.

STR6 AP3 ignoring cover was just made for punishing MEQs, so that's exactly what I'm gonna ask it to do.

Don'z forget your enemy could do the same thing to you ;P!

Since the blood claws were downgraded (especially against MEQ) 10 Grey Hunters+ Guard+ HQ have become popular now...

Dark it was, and dire of form
the beast that laid them low
Hrothgar's sharpened frost-forged blade
to deal a fatal blow
he stalked and hunted day and night
and came upon it's lair
With sword and shield Hrothgar fought
and earned the name of slayer

Then you get hit by a STR 10 Thunder Hammer, which can hit you 6 times.

Actually 5 unless we are talking about an IC. My bet is on the LRR though, seeing as at best, the TWC will be hitting on 4+ and just as likely 6+ (PotMS allows you to fire one cannon after moving over 6"). Then you need a 5+ to pen and another 5+ to destroy. But heah, unlike carnies, you can at least reach the LR .

Well, honestly, I've played against them with IG and have been taking in batreps...

SWs strongest build is TWC, and as SM, plasma guns are an excellent way to kill them off.

You can't cut all of your meltas, but the nastiest TWC lists I've seen are completely foot, and totally melta immune.

Plasma wounds just as well as melta against T5, and you've got the long range shot plus twice as many short range shots.

My IG army just went +9 plasma guns and -5 meltaguns to compensate for SW (and anticipating nids as well)

Shep, from the collection of Batreps you have sorted through could you list some of these nasty TWC foot armies. I am sure there are a couple common builds or features you could distill.
