Given that Rogue Trader was published in 1987, I would think it likely.

didn't that rule came up with the ARMAGEDDON CODEX where they implemented rules for the Salamanders, Black Templars and the Cult of Velocity ? (sry if it's wrong, but I've translated from Italian)

Or am I wrong ?

I've bought my last models from GW on October 10th, 2011. Since then I've bought none, I am against their price policy. Screw them.

The red making things faster has been around since the Rogue trader days.
[update]
Ok, it started in Waaargh da Orks, which was printed in 1990, under the Evil Sunz entry. Not sure it became an actual rule thing until 2e... my memory isn't great on this as I never played Orks

It was definitely post 1979, given the publication date on RT (1987).

Waagh the orks was also RT.

Red ones have always gone faster in real life ages before GW.
I don't know when the ruling came about but the fluff has been around in the Warhammer world for donkeys.

Why do you want to know?

To be honest, I'm not sure if there was a vehicle upgrade card for a red paint job in 2nd Edition. There very well might have been, particularly if it was something that was included in a White Dwarf somewhere. Heck, it probably came out in the same WD that introduced Moto-X. The first time I remember it actually having rules was in 3rd Edition, but there's always been the belief that red vehicles go faster.

Of course, this is a reflection of our own instincts--look at all the people driving red sports cars.

Fairly sure there was no actual rule for it in 2nd edition. It was just mentioned as the reason that the Evil Sunz painted their vehicles red.

In English it's The Cult of Speed (or rather the Kult of Speed, with their members being known as the Speed Freaks). But to be honest, Cult of Velocity is so much more awesome

On that thought, how much of trukk needs to be red?.
if any

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

How fast do you need it to go?

As far as I can remember, there was no in game effect or rule for red paint in 2nd edition. It was included in the 3rd edition codex and again in the new one.

As endtransmission mentioned, it's in 'Waaargh Orks' (1990):

"Red is a particularly hard colour for Orks to get hold of because Mekboyz use so much painting Ork vehicles red to make them go faster".

This wasn't a rule, but I think it was the first time it was mentioned in the fluff. Although the original Ork 'moon buggy' was always painted bright red. Didn't it first become a rule in GorkaMorka?

@ Uriel and Alex ,

actually this popped out while i was watching anime ( sorry to the people not interested in anime! )

But basically the anime is called Kampfer , and there is a scene where they are fighting against a "red" enemy ,
and they said " red is faster , by 3 times! " So i was like "wow" to my cousin ( was thinking Orks ) , he was surprised that he thought i know the old anime.
So he explained that in the 1979 gundam anime was a commander called Char , and he pilots a custom painted Zaku "Red Comet" amongst the "green tide" ( mass produced green Zaku ).
Apparently the Red Comet is exactly the same built as the rest , the only difference is the red paint , yet it flies 3x faster .

So then i was wondering if the green tide and red paint job was connected between warhammer and gundam lol

Cult of Velocity sounds like a wicked band name.

On a side note, I've always wanted to build a "Kult of Speed" as appalachians running meth. Use Catachan plastics and necromunda models, and put stills and shot guns on everything.

I know in 1992 the ork army for the epic system had a red paint upgrade, cause red goes fasta!

It's possible. GW draw their inspiration from a whole lot of different and often rather obscure places.

Although the 'red goes faster' idea is a pretty commonly held piece of urban folklore as well. Scientists would probably tell you that it's a corruption of the fact that red light is faster than other colours (or has a faster/shorter bandwidth or somesuch sciency thing. It's been too long since high school science for me to remember for sure... but it's something along those lines.)

as cool as that would be, sadly it isnt. But the red ones in Gundam are called "Char Custom". I wished I had a Char custom ork army.

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.
