It's been almost 15 years since I've played the game. Perhaps 6-7 years ago my wife bought me the updated rulebook (1999) printing -- not sure what edition that is... aswell as the Ork codex (1999) editions -- I believe that rule book and ork rule follow the same edition.

She's interested in playing... she found all my old orcs and such... as surprise, she jumped the gun and went out and bought the new warhammer 40k box set.... Assault on Black... I won't take it back, because she was trying to be nice and was thrilled with her purchase... I admit, the box set was kind of lacking -- big thick book and such, like it contained 15 years ago.

The book that came with the Assault on Black Beach is really small... surfing the web I found, the new rule book for Assault on Black beach and it's about 300 pages compared to the small manual I have. What is the difference between? And would my Ork Codex be compatable (1999) with the new rules?

I'm heard the rules are getting worse and worse? What about psionic powers and such -- do they exists?

If you had your choice, what rules would you play? I remember way back in the day, librarians and wierd boys had powers and such.

Thanks

Did a little research, I think my two books are 4th edition... back in highschool I played 2nd edition.

Do the 5th edition rules use Ork Mega armor? I love those beasty models... or have something similar to Mega Armor?

The small book is just rules, the big book is rules and fluff.

The latest Ork codex was published in 2007.

The rules are getting better and better. Mny say that 5th is the best edition yet.

Psychic powers still exist.

I would play 5th edition.

Librarians and Wierdboyz still have powers.

And Mega Armor still exists. Be joyful.

EDIT: And AoBR is not "lacking".

Psychic powers are in each army's codex. There are no other expansions.

So far as the game getting better or worse... in many ways, 3rd edition was a huge step backwards. It streamlined the game a lot for easier play, but killed off a lot of the character, and removed a lot of what made the game fun in 2nd ed (Psychic Powers being one of the obvious examples).

4th edition went some way towards correcting that, and 5th edition has been a huge leap forward for the game. I'm enjoying 5th edition more than I ever did 2nd... and that's after 3rd and 4th edition nearly saw me lose interest in the game completely.

On codexes... 3rd and 4th edition codexes will work with 5th edition, although some of the older ones will need a little tweaking here and there as some rules have changed. And they'll be missing a lot of the fun stuff that's been creeping back into the 5th ed books. Like Shokk Attack Guns, just for starters

O H I am in the Webway...

Welcome back ;D.

I highly reccomend to start gathering information about 5E from various sites (Dakka and www.yesthetruthhurts.com *more powergamey* are my favorites).

Here's some tips:

1. Mechanized is the way to go!
2. Special character armies are very popular!
3. Speed kills.
4. Troops are very valuable!
5. Wound allocation (this can be described later) is VERY important for things like ork nobz.
6. Orks are semi-competitive, strong vs. softer lists, weak vs. hard lists.

PLEASE take a look around at other armies than Smurfs and Orks. I don't mean to discourage you at all! It's just that a LOT of people are into these two armies and you might find you like some of the other updated armies!

Good luck getting started back up!

And most importantly, start playing some games!

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

No, you're always playing the game. This just means you haven't lost for a long time.

It's better to simply be an idiot, as no one can call you on it here. -H.B.M.C.

Cap'n Gordino's instant grammar guide:
"This is TOO expensive." "I'm going TO the store, TO get some stuff."
"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that."

Personally, im a big fan of the newest rules. Call me daft, but i like them. Your 1999 codex wont be suitable for the new rule book.
The difference between your manual from AoBR and hte whole rule book is font-size, and lots of stories and colour pictures/scenarios in the whole rule book. I have both and tend to use the little manuel because its easy to use.
And AoBR is a good box set.. my brother got two of them...

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"

Is that followed by a pile-in move?

That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"

Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round?

My personal opinion is that I agree with the other posters who say that 5th brings some of the character and depth of second back, especially in the codicies. I believe you'll like it.

I personally don't feel that 5th box is lacking, but I admit I like all the background material that came in the 2nd box.
