Although we have had who knows how many million posts in our 12+ year lifespan, rarely does a forum stay stable enough to allow us to reach the million post milestone. The current set of posts dates back to 2005 and any moment now will break the million post mark. You can read about dakka's long history in our Dakka History Article. While other forums have higher post counts than us, we have certainly been around as a culture longer than any of the others and that is well reflected in the community here.
I just wanted to say congrats and thanks to everyone who has ever posted something interesting, helpful or insightful, you make dakka what it is. Thanks to the moderators and yakface for moderating and managing a million posts and thanks to the machine spirit for sparing this version of forum for 2+ years and counting. Thanks to the article moderators for giving us things to talk about, thanks to the swap mods for dealing with the most unpleasant forum to moderate and thanks to the DCMs for being a solid core to the community.
As a treat, you can see dakka's growth over the last few years in these graphs. When we relaunched dakka, I carefully monitored a lot of other websites so that I could see any general trends in wargaming interest and any effective ideas that other sites came up with. As you can see below, dakka is going from strength to strength and is one of, if not the healthiest community in terms of long term prospects.

The post count is a solidly increasing denoting a more active community. The new membership added per day has risen in 09 past that of Warseer, very commendable stuff and a great picture for current and potential sponsors.
I think added weight was also brought to Dakka by Yakface and the Adepticon folks for the FAQ adopted by Games Workshop, folks online saw and sought out the site. Dakka is seen as the place where things are discussed for resolution and where you can contribute to potential FAQs in the future.

About a 25% of new member signups are spammers and those 2 spikes are mostly spam attacks. I dont know if the same is true of spikes in other website's user registrations.
The numbers are all very rough as different forums report different figures in different ways so they are all face-value only, but still give a rough indication as to the health of the online wargaming community. The big dip in warseer signups comes from the rise of bell of lost souls and the tightening of rumours by GW by my guess. Any big dips in post counts are usually due to technical failures of forum archiving/cleanup.

we've never had a month with less traffic than the previous month so I've not been able to extract much in the way of seasonal trends yet. More americans come on in the summer and more europeans in the winter, but other than that there is little to say.

I think that in addition to the fine community here at Dakka the biggest influences in its recent success: (in no particular order)
- Yakface and Adepticon FAQ fame (as mentioned above)
- Legoburner's awesome tech-fu, which has made Dakka faster and more stable than ever.
- The brain storming between Yak and Lego on slick new features like the Articles, photos, etc.

It just means that there were fewer users reported in one period than in the previous period. Could be anything from archiving old users who are no longer around, deleting bad users, system failure or installing a software upgrade which does not import all old users, etc.

My personal experience with dakka goes way back to my first account, then things were average okish and got bored and closed account for 1 year... registered again on new dakka and man... oh man I have to confess its getting better and better, its faster than ever, really enjoyable and has some of the best debates in the net... its not biased and its good to see diferent backgrounds of gamming here yet somehow main foccus still 40k. I saw this forum getting from almost forgotten on my favorites to the current 1st place.
Thanks to dakka for growing so fast in the right direction, a pleasure to be here.
