Hi all,
I'm a painter and modeler more than a gamer, but I want to make sure what i'm sticking together is legal.
I'm making a space marine assault squad as a retinue for a shrike-like special character. How do the marines have to be kitted out? Is it just bolt pistol and chainsword, or can I put on the power fist/axe/sword, storm shield?
Cheers

IIRC In the 4e dex his retinue also had paired Lighting Claws. This could still be made this way in 5e

Yup, Shrikes Bodyguard is better represented as Vanguard anyway.

Excellent, thanks guys! So I can give the others the power weapons if I choose, including paired lightning claws. Now all I need is loads more lightning claws...

A regular assault squad can only have two plasma pistols or flamers in the squad and a power weapon or fist on the sergeant. But yeah, Vanguard would definitely be a better way to represent Shrike's Wing.
Back in the 4th edition codex he could take "Shrike's Wing" which was a bodyguard of 10 assault marines with frag grenades and lightning claws. They were wicked expensive points-wise; probably about the same as they would cost to make now as vanguard vets with lightning claws.

Old Codex:
Shrike + 4 Wing = 379 (75.8/Model)
Shrike + 9 Wing = 634 ( 63.4/Model)
Special Rules: Have Scout, Infiltrate and Stealth
New Codex:
Shrike + 5 Vanguard = 505 (84.16/Model)
Shrike + 10 Vanguard = 805 Points (73.18/Model)
Special Rules: Have Infiltrate (though they can only outflank because of it) and Fleet.
5th ed Shrike has -1 Attack but gains +1 Weapon skill compared to 4th ed Shrike. 5th ed Shrike also Loses Rites of Battle.
The Vanguard and Wing have Identical Characteristics, but the Vanguard have an Additional Sergeant, so +1 Wound and +3 Attacks for the Vanguard. However, they work out at close to 10 points more per model than the Old Shrikes Wing, 10 points that are for the Heroic Intervention that cannot not be used.
Conclusion: GW too the Nerf Bat, threw it away and replaced it with a Bat made of pure Makecrappium.

I don't really understand that... as I said, i'm a modeler and painter not a gamer. Are you saying that that shrike's wing is rubbish?

Although expensive, they still would kick a whole lot of ass. Vanguard/Sternguard just kill things plain and simple
