Hey people, I'm starting Flames of War as a cheaper wargame I can play when I'm not in the mood for 40k, and I'm having some problems choosing an army. Russians seemed appealing at first with lots of conscripts, but my motherland is calling and them Brits sure are tempting. How do British armies fare these days?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

The latest book to come out is Hells Highway which now gives the option for elite veteran brits (enemies need to roll a 2+ to hit). You can do pretty much anything with a brit army now depending on your preferences and they are very well rounded.

2+ to hit? Isn't that a bad thing? Did you mean that the Brit veterans need a 2+ to hit?

Oops yeah I had that backwards, sorry. Veterans are 4+ to hit (conscripts 2+, trained 3+).

I've been plying FOW for several years and I play all the army's as well as play against them all. The most balanced and the one I enjoy playing against the least is a Brit Rifle company. A lot of list seem to be one trick ponys and once you figure out how to beat them they fall pretty regularly. This list is well equipted to handle any opponent.

The Brit Rifle list I find a nightmare to face is this.

HQ 25
Rifle platoon 135
Rifle platoon 135
Rifle platoon 135
Tank Platoon w firefly 280
Tank Platoon w firefly 280
Anti tank Platoon 240
Carrier Platoon 3 patrols 200
8 gun 25pdr battery 275
AOP 25

The list is so redundant. You can't single out one single section of the army to make it fall, and any part of it can kill something of yours. That makes it difficult to beat. It is like 3 seperate armys all in one, a rifle platoon supported by a tank platoon with recon and arty support X'3.

You have 3 good Rifle platoons that are a pain to dig out of their holes. With pretty good rules and a Piat making them deadly in the assualt for infantry or tanks.

Three tank platoons capable of killing most german armour.

The carrier patrols are the most annoying this in the game when you have to deal with them. They have lots of MG dice and harrass anything not armoured while the disengage rules make them tough to kill, and they like to swarm in on objectives should the enemy leave one unguared.

And the artillery is the best in the game. Even Tiger companys fall should they let you get more than one tank under a template at a time. The AOP lets you put that template anywhere on the board.

I play against British riles a lot. They're a very solid army that's very difficult to convincingly beat.
