Now my friend has played lizardmen for ages, and i have the small rulebook, so i thought it made sense to give it a try. Warriors of chaos caught my eye, even though i hate the idea of chaos, because of these giants clad in armour etc, and there small elite armies which i like the idea of. I currently have the games day exalted champion, and when ive finished painting my vossies, will invest in a box of chaos warriors. Now i want to know where to go from here? a nice 500 p army would be a good start, but what to get idk.

Just to say i appsolutely hate marauders, so staying away from these would be very nice.

Warriors of Chaos have some pretty decent Magic. Besides that, the Chaos Warriors, Chaos Knights and Warhounds are pretty good units. Warriors cost too much to make a lot of ranks with them, so I'd suggest to run them in 2 ranks of 6 per unit. Chaos Knights should have only one rank of 6. Warhounds are just there for annoyance (march-blocking and re-directing) so should be minimum size.

For 500 pts,
A hero of some sorts (magic or killing)

I'd go with Maraudars and see if you can fit a chariot

It's hard to make a 500 point army for WoC with the restrictions you've supplied. A small unit of warriors can easily reach 200 points or more, and a character pretty much starts at 110. Plan for higher point levels, like 1000 minimum, or learn to like marauders.

For 500 points you can do this:

Exalted Champion w/Shield 115

Marauder Horseman x 5 - Shields, Throwing Axes, musician 86

Chariot 120

Marauder Inf x 10 Flails 60

Marauder Inf x 18 Full Command, Lt.Armour, Shield 128

Total 499. I don't have the book with me, so some of these numbers might be off. But this gives you a high speed flanking unit to get behind the enemy, peppering them with axe shots, then charging a rear or flank with the horseman. You have the Chariot which you can use head on or from the flank that is like a giant burning log. You should get at least 5 kills from the model the turn it charges. The small unit of Marauders to either bait or counter charge a la the empire. Your beefy block of marauders, which you can put your champion in and slay the bad guys.

You can also ditch the musician in the Horseman and add that extra rank and file Marauder guy giving you 3 ranks. That unit then has 4 static combat res, it probably will out number in a 500 point game, 3 Str 5 attacks at WS 7, 5 Str 3 attacks at WS 4. Your armour saves are pretty good to in hand-to-hand.

There probably won't be too much magic in a 500 point game. You can use the Horseman to kill the rogue wizard. If he is hiding in a unit charge the flank with your horseman, pin the unit for one round, hit it with the chariot and bring in your infantry for the ass kicking your opponent deserves for using magic in a 500 point game!

Actually, a Slaanesh sorcerer with lv 2 and a power familiar could really rule the table. A magic missle guaranteed if you got nothing better, a spell to make the enemy frenzied and take damage, or frenzy your own unit. A spell to make the enemy move towards you, a spell to spam panic tests, or a spell that's kind of hard to cast but will devastate most any unit at this point level. Only 150 points. Or, if you're content with casting 1 spell per turn, give him the Bloodskull pendant and don't even upgrade him. Only like 130 points and in hth will have 3 auto-hit S8 attacks.

He did say he didn't like the marauders right? Anyway, I would go with Warriors, Knights, and Exalted Hero. Load them up with marks, gifts, equipments. I would try different gods to test how you want the army to work. I would start with Nurgle as you will definitely get shot up. Give everyone shields. I am also just starting and this is how I plan my first army.

As said above, gonna be hard running WoC at 500pts. marauders really shine in this list, and as said above, use them for static combat res, and the warriors to break the opponent.

May be best to invest in the batallion, its pretty good, and will put you at a good point level for not much $$$

I mostly agree, though if you really really don't want foot marauders than is it cheaper to just buy the components separate? I forget the battalion's cost ...

Anyway, you wanted 500 points w/ GD exalted, 1+ box of warriors, no 'marauders'? Can you stomach the (really quite stunning IMO) marauder horsemen box?

H: Exalted - roar, two hand weapons = 134
C: 12 Warriors - full command, shields = 254
C: 5 Horsemen - musician, flails = 81

I think that's a solid core army that takes your models into account, with horsemen for flexible awesomeness. Note that you have 30 points left over, for magic items (there are many 30 or less options for the exalted, such as book of secrets, helm of ASF, armors, magic weapons, etc) or for marks or for a magic banner or for 5 warhounds. In my version I went with MoT on the exalted and warriors, to keep your few models on the table (and because I play tzeentch warriors ). If you're of the Pink Persuasion, MoS on all the units is a 'safe' move, especially for one new to fantasy, as it circumvents fear and such. It also leaves 5 points, which I'd put into light armor on the horsemen OR model a shield onto the back of the GD model and buy the exalted a shield - choice of 5 S5 attaks but 4+ save vs 4 S5 with a 2+ ...

Downside is of course how small and slow it is. The horsemen are good because they give you some mobile threat, but even if you spend your 30 points on 5 dogs the army is certainly 'elite'
