May be best to invest in the batallion, its pretty good, and will put you at a good point level for not much $$$
I mostly agree, though if you really really don't want foot marauders than is it cheaper to just buy the components separate? I forget the battalion's cost ...
Anyway, you wanted 500 points w/
GD exalted, 1+ box of warriors, no 'marauders'? Can you stomach the (really quite stunning
IMO) marauder horsemen box?
H: Exalted - roar, two hand weapons = 134
C: 12 Warriors - full command, shields = 254
C: 5 Horsemen - musician, flails = 81

I think that's a solid core army that takes your models into account, with horsemen for flexible awesomeness. Note that you have 30 points left over, for magic items (there are many 30 or less options for the exalted, such as book of secrets, helm of
ASF, armors, magic weapons, etc) or for marks or for a magic banner or for 5 warhounds. In my version I went with
MoT on the exalted and warriors, to keep your few models on the table (and because I play tzeentch warriors
). If you're of the Pink Persuasion,
MoS on all the units is a 'safe' move, especially for one new to fantasy, as it circumvents fear and such. It also leaves 5 points, which I'd put into light armor on the horsemen OR model a shield onto the back of the
GD model and buy the exalted a shield - choice of 5 S5 attaks but 4+ save vs 4 S5 with a 2+ ...
Downside is of course how small and slow it is. The horsemen are good because they give you some mobile threat, but even if you spend your 30 points on 5 dogs the army is certainly 'elite'
