Hi,

A good way to start getting ideas if you're not sure is to search through the already posted army lists and see what looks good. I'm just starting fantasy (have high elves and getting into lizardmen soon!) and this is what I've been doing .

You can also try playing around with units in Army Builder (although with the trial version, you can only do a very small point value).

Cheers

I don't play either but have played against them to know some general things.

Lizards are the better of the 2 currently (newer book) and can run many differnt lists.

Dwarfs in the current edition reduced to using a gunline with a few counter charge units.

What do you guys think of skaven as an army choice

Skaven are a great book, both the new book and the old. The problem is of course playing such an unwieldy army correctly. With so many models on the table, your deployment zone gets clogged up pretty fast. They are a horde army that does it correctly, and can bring volume of fire to knock off ranks giving your blocks a better chance of winning by combat res. Their magic phase is among the more powerful, but you can usually safely skip heavy magic defense since you have so many bodies to absorb losses. The new book gives plenty of options for war machines, but be wary of them, the new skaven book has more random "bad things could happen" charts than I have ever seen. Probably has more misfire and random action tables than the rest of WHFB combined.

So if you want a huge army that wins with static res, but still has a large random element to it, skaven are a great choice.

Dwarfs are not seen as a competitive tournament army. In addition, the models are inferior to any of the more recent plastics. However, they've got great fluff

Lizards definately have more variety to them, as well as great leadership, lots of cool monsters and LD you can't beat. Skinks, terradons, kroxigors and stegadons have great movement. The Engine of the Gods for Lizardmen are pretty versatile too.
Dwarves on the other hand, have great stats and armor, as well as the best shooting phase in the game (LOTS of warmachines). Only require 1 or 2 runesmiths to dominate the magic phase (or end it - better term). Fluffwise they're pretty good too, although if you want to get into the competitive tournament side with them, your really limited to, as folks have stated, running an Anvil of Doom gunline. Having the slowest movement of the game, most dwarf players you see will castle up in a corner of the board, shoot artillery at you, as well as handguns and crossbows, while Wrath and Ruining your fastest/nastiest/flying units to slow them down.
I used to play dwarves, but got very tired of it quickly due it getting boring pretty quick. I didn't even take the Anvil to make it more interesting, but it didn't. Shooting phase goes well - win game. Shooting phase bad = lose.
