Crazed Spirit of the Defiler

Hi Guys, I have just started playing fantasy again after a 4 year 40k only hiatus. I have received some really positive comments and scores on some of my miniatures but, now I have pretty much finished CSM, Orks and Eldar, I have decided to paint an FB army.

With all of my armies, I have rushed them. Be it to get painted for tournaments (CSM), painted 1750 points in a weekend when wifey's away (orks) or just wanting to play with them quickly so rushing them (eldar) I have never actually spend time on an army and enjoyed painting as a process, not just for the end result. The plan is for this army is to be an army that is not rushed and one that I am proud of...

I realise VCs are a little harsh in some builds but this project is much more about fluff/fun/models than competitiveness for me. I will pretty much add only stuff I like.

The inspiration for this army came from reading the rather sub-par vampire trilogy from the BL. While the books were so-so, there were some cool parts.... This army takes inspiration from the part where Vlad is doing his mass-raise from Drakenhof Castle. Some of the stuff (blood knights etc) won't fit in fluff wise so I am not going to be too strict on this but I want to get the "Just-raised" look on most things.

I am creating the display board first before I even assemble any of the models so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

This blog will be updated slowly as I am in no rush to do this and will probably get side-tracked at times but it will be updated. I will also try and keep this more organised in the way posts go and such.

So, before my first actual post about the army... Here's a few facts about my prep/skills etc

1: I have never, ever made scenery before last week. A good friend (on the forums - Alex k) gave me a 1 hour crash course in scenery making
2: I have absolutely 0% spatial awareness whatsoever... I cannot imagine things in 3d and how they will look. I cannot draw for toffee but can, for some reason, paint minis pretty well
3: I am also slightly colourblind
4: I am absolutely rubbish at anything practical and have used a saw once in my life

5: Most importantly (hence the bold!) I have a deep phobia of polystyrene or anything like it... Considering my whole project is going to be made of this, it could be great fun. I literally could not open gifts at Xmas as a kid and had to leave the room if there was any in them.

So, on those positive notes, I begin with my project!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so the idea for this is Vlad's mass raise from Drakenhof.

My ever-helpful and practical friend from these forums was nice enough to assmble my base for the display board (see pics) and give me a few sheets of the dreaded, evil and selfish polystyrene to work with.

I was also fortunate enough to have enough £ worth of still wrapped 40k stuff to purchase my entire VC army (in the boxes in pics)

I recently got the the old plastic GW Fortress so that will be the basis of the castle. Add to this the Fortified Manor kit, arcane ruins and Temple of skulls (may not use this) and I think I have enough stuff...

An so, on to the first pics...

Lots of shiney toys (yay!):

And the beautifully assembled base for my board (yay!)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so I am planning to create a 3-tier board to add height to the piece. I will add another piece of foam in between the two in the pic but the foam is in my car at the moment and I am lazy!

I plan to include:

Vlad on the castle middle raising
His VC crew hanging around him looking ebil
Mannfred (acolytle) on a LOTR fellbeast somewhere
Vargulf climbing upa wall somewhere
Bloodknights and black coach on the cobbled road
Zombies coming out of a swam
Skeletons in a gravyard
Wights and ghouls coming out from a 3 level crypt
Batsghosts hanging around

Anyways, a very, very rough first plan:

Yup... Will be getting a big knife to start choppin'... My hobby knife is too small and the only tool I can actually find is a short handled phillips screwdriver - nice!

Just getting and assembling the last few bits of my OnG so I can at least use them in games then it's onto the board. Still thinking about how I can do the 3 level crypt for the wights and ghouls.

Also, still trying to find a model for a Bruce Campbell AoD reproduction - He just HAS to be hidden on the board somewhere holding a shotgun against the ebil things... May even do a little bit of his car showing from a hidden cave somewhere... Army of Darkness mingled with Warhammer - a geek's dream...

I said it would probably be the slowest blog ever and I wasn't lying!!!

Anywa,s I have finished a few units now... The movement trays are not the actual ones to be used - these will also be modelled to fit the display board and the current ones are jst for gaming purposes

So, modelling is done for:

2 GHoul Units
Grave guard
Blood Knights
Corpse Cart
Nearly another ghoul unit (just waiting for more ghouls)

Still to go:
Another Corpse Cart
Scratch build Black Coach
Lots of zombies
Skeletons
Wraiths
Spirit Hosts
Dogs
Black Knights

I am pretty happy with how the unit fillers are coming out at the moment... Sorta cartoony but that's fine with me!

This is the first time I have tried something like this so any comments/suggestions appreciated.

Also, any colour scheme suggestions also appreciated- I am thinking almost monochrome with OSL for funsies.

Anyways, onto the pics:

Nice to see another WFB PBlog.

As a question - those big casket/etc, models in the Skeleton/Ghoul blocks - do they serve an actual game purpose or is it just "block filler"? I've seen it in other armies and I'm not too familiar with the VC book and was always curious about it.

I love the idea you have with them sacrificing the fellas, and tearing them apart. Very inventive, and I can not wait to see them painted.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Cheers for all the comments guys... Much appreciated - they are all fun to make but I am running out of stuff to fill.

The block things like the casket/column etc are all just base fillers - so they make up for x amount of models - depending on their base size.

Atm, I am just throwing together some very simple black knights using pistoleers and graveguard bodies... I hate the current BKs.

Will get some more pics up as I get them - Probably going to model the whole army before painting.

That's what I figured. Makes sense considering how many of them you're likely to end up with.

Seems to be the common opinion on the BK's. I think I've seen most people using Bret Knights as the base for BK's.

It's a sexy Mrs Claus for the Xmas season, everyone's doing it so get with the program.

I was getting use to battling the gobbos, maybe i'll just play by touch alone from now!

Edit: Also, i'm not up to much this weekend so if you fancy a game of anything or a paint or a pint let me know. If not then we'll sort one out next week.
Also, I should be getting the keys to the shop at the start of next week, fancy some heavy lifting!!!
