I'm liking those songs from Nightingale.

It was certainly different. I kinda prefer bands like Vesania(song ex. Posthuman Kind), Behemoth(anything before or after the cd Demigod), etc for the more melodic death stuff though. I think it's because they don't do a lot of the higher vocals. I love pretty much most of the death metal stuff(melodeath, deathcore, death metal etc.)

I'm listening to it right now....Nice intro. A bit heavy on the Cookie Monster Vocals....The chorus is okay....chug-chug-chug-chug-chug...I like the oriental bit, but instead of the Shamisen they should be powering it out with the flute there...total fast finger master class bit....Okay, they ditched the Shamisen for the guitar here, nice....the organ sounds a bit lame (did they let somebody's GF into the band or something?)...ending is a smooth metal wrap up.

Too Cookie Monster vocals. With Therion or Arch Enemy you can at least understand 70%. This was like 25%. I think it needed more "flair" during the verses. And I mean Ric Flair.

"Wooooooooooooooooo"

It rocks. 7.75/10

I do like it for how its so much more of a different approach. I love Vikings with all my heart but Samurai are pretty badass.
And your right it is rather hard to understand, I actually had to look up the lyrics.

If you guys didn't already know head to blackmetalmovie.com to check out a trailer for a documentary on the beginning of black metal.

Really compelling and I'm sure the soundtrack will be worth the admission price.

@Khornholio: Cookie monster vocals is a brilliant way of putting it.

I really liked that music, but the 'cookie monster' vocals make me cringe a little. Listening to that song is like eating a cupcake that someone has spat on. The cupcake still tastes awesome, but you steel yourself to endure the spittle while wishing that it had icing (regular singing) instead.

Well cookie monster is the stereotype vocals for death metal and melodeath is just fancy death metal. Arch Enemy uses a lot of distortion so not really a good comparison to non modified stuff. Therion really doesn't use death metal vocals so I don't know if thats a great comparison either. I mean a melodeath band thats all over in someone like Opeth with their clean and guttural vocals.

I really, REALLY like metallica, altho they're not really black/death metal, but rather a very melodic form of metal. I like how none of their songs sounds the same and their guitarrist kirk is awesome especially in the solo part in whiskey in the jar(one of best songs EVER imho)

Therion used Cookie Monster vocals on Sirius B/Lemuria :Three Ships of Berik. They were clear and understandable. I don't know about Therion's early, early stuff. The oldest album I have is Theli. To me heavy vocal distortion is a derivative of Cookie Monster. Arch Enemy's stuff from around 2000 is really good and understandable (I think the new singer is hotter than the old one, but his vocals were way better...I saw an album last week with her doing the stuff from Burning Bridges, maybe its nostalgia talking but, seriously, meh.)The vocals on the OPs post unmodified, cookie monster, distorted, rehashed, burnt on water, whatever you want to call it, isn't that good. I dug the tune, a solid B+ all around, but the vocals were a total C-. The lyrics could be uber deep, dark, sinister, brutal and poetic but if all I can get out of it is "Screaming! Screaming for Cookies!", I'll pass.

You're right about Opeth. I dig them too.

I think Dio should do a melodic death album. It would rock so hard it'd melt your face. \M/ \M/

Re:Metallica. When the Black Album came out in 91, I bought it. I liked the first track. Then kept saying to myself,"OK, the next track will rock....Ok, the next one...maybe this next one will be good....man what is up with this album?" I saw them back to back nights at MLG in Toronto. The concerts were awesome, and I loved them again. Then came the eye make-up and the fun fur. Dude, they cut their hair. I haven't liked them since LOAD of gak. We had Re-LOAD kicking around the apartment years ago, but it was used mostly as a coaster, sometimes emergency ashtray.

Justice was good. Master was Good. My fav is ride the lightning. Kill'em All was good too. I had the Garage days in Cassette for awhile, but it got destroyed somehow.

Death Magnetic is best one since the Black album but Black and before were the best. Load and Re-load sucked.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Sooo... any of you play anything or in a band?

I'm a fan of lots of metal, from Dreamtheater to Deicide. I listen to too much prog nowadays, but as a muso I can't help it.

Metallica has been pretty crap overall post-Burton, but there have been a few shining moments amidst the stinking pile of crud. I'd rather listen to Hammerfall.

I actually still really like Sepultura... will always be one of my favourites. Sonata Arctica is one of my favourite bands of all time too. In Flames (up to Reroute to Remain) is one of the foundations of my musicianship, and a great example of melodic death (up to Reroute to Remain). Dark Tranquility is also supremely cool - I'm wearing their 'The New Build' tour t-shirt right now - and are pretty much responsible for the genre. I met Mikael Stanne on my birthday just after they played in Brisbane a few years back... very charismatic guy.

I'm going to put it out there... I absolutely hate hardcore/metal crossover bands. I hate hearing 'core' pinned to the end of every legitimate genre. It's not grindcore, it's grind. If it's called grindcore, I will forever assume it has a pussy vocalist whining his ex-girlfriend's name over the track whilst straightedge kids in three-sizes-too-small black jeans kick each other in the head.

You can find a couple of songs by my old band, 'Elysian', here. The tracks Ivory Face of Fright and Hollow and Lonely Sleep are copyright Elysian 2006 etc. etc.

The other two are just me screwing around. I never use myspace, they're all a few years old.

These guys are local to me. I graduated HS with the guitarist Shawn.

For those that don't have Myspace they were the FIRST American metal band to record in the now famous Studio Fredman in Gotberg, Sverige.

They are working on a 3rd and will go back to Studio Fredman to record it when it's 100% ready.

Here are some reviews.....

"The Fifth Sun hurls their frozen axe deep into the heart of American Death Metal. Simply put, this album is just plain heavy." -Metal Review.com

Review on their second Album...

"Wow, I get this out of the blue, sophomore album from The Fifth Sun – a band out of Minnesota of all fething places - and it completely blows me away. I can see no reason whatsoever for a band this amazing to be unsigned, unless they want to stay independent, because this disc will make any record exec from Century Media drop his gak right where he's standing. Out of the clear fething blue The Fifth Sun have cranked up an ungodly badass metal machine, and I only hope it gets them the respect they so richly deserve. Anyone who enjoys melodic Death Metal, or metal in any way shape or form will enjoy this raging slab of fury. Highly recommended and a band to watch. The Fifth Sun are going to be big".-The Metal Crypt.com

Listen to some sample tracks. I don't expect everyone to like them but even without knowing 2 of the 3 members personally I like their sound and I'd still buy the albums. For only having released 2 albums so far they have a very promising future.

yep it's a little too much on the cookie monster vocals. I like my growling here and there but it can get real old real fast especially since every band does it now. Just aint enough variety these days.

Nothing I haven't heard before :p I can think of other, better-known bands that do everything they're doing just better. Some transition between the really aggressive and slow, melodic parts would have been nice instead of the cut-and-paste piece of crap moments they are now. I get that the sharp contrast should make it all the more harsh, but it just makes it sound really elementary. The lead guitar fails to do anything for me because it seems to play around a little aimlessly. Not nearly as aimless as much of what I've heard, but it really gives the feeling of "umm, I'm gonna do this now!" as opposed to having a flow, ascending, descending, and carrying itself. The vocals are fine, a little break up or change in pace might have been nice. It really felt like the melodic parts were thrown to cover up the fact that everything else was so generic.

It's hard to name a favorite metal band when one has so many of them. I really like to listen stuff from a wide spectrum altough I don't really care too much about slow doom (a bit zzzz, altough I know it's about creating atmosphere).

First to smash the eardrums (the drumming is crAyzy said Chris Walken):

You play gw games and haven't heard Bolt Thrower, shame on you!

And I'll round up with a classic.

Aces High is such a good song.

I love Maiden. I always play 'the Trooper' when I'm playing any form of shoot um up. Which i then have to stop and play it on guitar.

I'm a big fan of progressive metal, especially Dream Theater. Well i used to be anyway, I don't listen to much nowadays. 'Awake' is an amazing album, one of my favourite's.
