Does anyone know which are the most popular races? The ones that GW sells the most and least of.
I havent seem much Dark Eldar around for example but everyone seems to have at least one SM army.

Maybe we have a GW employee in our midst who can answer?

Space Marines, Imperial Guard, then I'm not sure.

I'd agree, Space Marines, and all its variants by a long long long margin.

Then Imperial Guard from what I can tell. Third is probably whatever bandwagon army there is (then again, Space Wolves just came out and I havent seen that many of them, and I consider them deviant enough from SM and their variants to be considered a proper army in their own right)

Before the IG latest came out, Orks out sold them or so I'm told.

If the sales were averaged out over the past few years, should look something like:

Space Marines (all variants included)
Chaos Space Marines
Orks
Imperial Guard
Tyranid
Eldar
Tau
Necrons
Inquisitors (both types)
Dark Eldar

I have no hard numbers on this list, but this is what has been conveyed to me through GW employees and FLGS over the past few years. Of course once a new codex is released that army typically jumps to the top of the list for the next 6 months or so until the next codex is released.

All of them, of course.

Blue marines*

Then light blue marines

Then spiky marines

Then black marines

Then red marines

Then haha crappy green marines

Then stanlingrad humans

Then fungus

Then some other xenos thats not important

Chaos round these parts, every second person has at least one chaos army either 40k or fantasy.

CSM are definitely not one of the popular now. I always find Chaos stuff, and only Chaos stuff, on clearance, and from my experience, I rarely see other Chaos players. They butchered this codex.

I kINDA agree with that list but I think Tau are more popular then Eldar. I Heard of more people and seen more Tau then Eldar Players. Buuut If I were to take a guess I would say they would be about even or so. Dark Eldar is a Definate last place though!

You don't need to be a really good player to be successful with dark eldar, you just need to not be slowed. The amount of anti tank firepower they bring is staggering and they have some nasty HQ and assault units. Sure they have AV10 vehicles but how many will you lose when every enemy vehicle is shaken? Every tournament i've played in has had a Dark Eldar player so they aren't that uncommon (though that player happened to be me every time...) As for models, it doesn't take a renaissance artist to glue a splinter pistol on a witch elf... The reason why Dark Eldar are so rare is the total lack of support. Stores don't carry their models and codex so of course their won't be a ton of new players. Everything is direct to order.

At least half, maybe 2/3rds of armies are SM or CSM.

Tau were more popular than Eldar until the Eldar codex got revised at the end of 4e, then Eldar shot ahead.

Excepting (C)SMs, the most popular armies are basically in order of which was the most recently released -- new models and/or codex.

Orks are in the starter box so they have an advantage over the more recent IG.

The reason for this is that new players are really only aware of what GW market, and GW naturally market the most recent things.

From what I gather here are the most common races:
