I have been working on a 2k list for Warriors of Chaos, and when I reviewed the list I was working on, I realized that I had over 750 points in my characters alone. That is a lot of points in 3 characters. What do you all think about how you distribute your points? How much goes into core, how much into characters, how much in toys, ect...

Tell me what you think.

Most armies have about 800 points in Characters in a 2000 points game, though it depends on the army as well. Certain armies can be competitive even when using 50% of their points on Characters. The Warriors of Chaos definately have good Characters, so spending 750 points on them isn't a bad idea (in a 2000 points game).

High Elves can easily hit 900 points in characters at 2k, Although that might have something to do with taking Tyrion, or Teclis. . .

Or a dragon... same as DE, Daemons can do 1000, and hit 900 easy. Really depends on the army.

Way I see it:

First, majority of your army should never be in characters. If you're playing a 2,000 point game, never should you be using 1,001 or more points in characters unless you're tourney-/power-playing and that's the most effective way to win.

Second: No one unit, on its own, should cost more than a significant fraction of your army's points, unless (see #1). Don't pay 900pts for a single unit in a 3,000 point game unless said unit is going to be wrecking everything in its path.

For an instance of my army lists, most of my 2K point armies field under 700pts in characters when I include a special character. When I don't, they're often under 600 or even 500. Similarly, none of my units cost more than 500pts (25%). I do not risk a single Infernal Gateway, -1 Leadership Panic Check, etc. throwing out a significant fraction of my army due to one (un)lucky roll.

In my WoC army, I usually have around 500 points invested in the characters. A general, at around 220ish, a BSB at around the 150 mark and the scroll caddy at 135.

The other 250 could allow for a lot more in your list. Of course in the ideal gaming world you'd have access to unlimited troop types to field. But, 250 can give you 2 chariots, or roughly 3 M.Horseman units w/musician, axes and shields,or a couple of big Marauder Inf blocks, or a unit of warriors, or a unit of knights.

The units in WoC usually hit hard, so a few extra units forces your opponent to deal with a lot of counter charging. All your eggs in one basket, no matter how deathstar-ish, can lose it on CR. Once you lose that 1000 pt unit in a game, you tend never to do it again.

Alright, cool. This was the kind of thing I was looking for. I wanted to see if there was any common strategy on this sort of thing. My list seems pretty core/special heavy, but I struggle with whether I am going to play the magic game, or just play that defensively. There is a Demon army, and a VC army in the upcoming campaign, so competing with them on the magic front may be tough.
