I wanted to start building terrain up for Field of Glory and/or Flames of War and I was curious
about what you felt was a "good" collection of terrain for either rules set.

How many larger pieces should I build?

How many templates would I need?

I think I'd need to focus on a general grassy/spring theme (my 28mm stuff is mostly desert themed) so
think along those lines.

Well it Depends... what era and what part of the world are you building it for?

I have a Universial terrian box which has Town houses, hedge rows rock fences, Trees( loose) Ruin Town houses Roads and Rivers, with hills.( that just for standard games) and its about 75 pieces for a 4x6 table.
Then for my desert table I have few rocky out crops and large area salt plains( about 15 pieces)

Its not like warhammer were terrrian a bane for you or advance for you, it about how actual battles were fought .

Best thing to do is do some research on the internet about 1930s and 1940s rural europe .....

there alot of fields with hedge rows

Check out Muskette miniatures. for Ideas on terrrian pieces.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

As StarGate has pointed out, it would depend very much on the era and type of game you're playing.

As the weapons of war gets more sophisticated and deadly, the concept of "cover" became an essential part of battlefield tactics. So if you're going to create terrain for WW2, you can't have too many trees.

But if you're going to play tank battles, just a handful of them would be enough.

In classical and medieval battles, cover was nowhere as important as elevation. So a having a hilly battlefield would be more important than trees.

Stargate: I probably won't do desert this time as I did desert for our 28mm stuff. Well, the 28mm
stuff is desert-y.

Thanks, yair. I think I've seen that somewhere before, but it's good to be pointed to it again. I
added his blog to my feed.

angelbleu: Your suggestions makes me think that to get this done I'm going to want to alternate
projects. Work on some hilly terrain (or one of its variants as listed in the Field of Glory
books and then switch to some kind of cover for Flames of War terrain.

When I set up a Flames of War battlefield I try for probably 60-70% terrain.

Usually I'll set up a road network, some fields and a village or two. Then fill in tree lines as well as a few larger sections of woods.

I recently got a small village worth of these 15mm euro buildings:
http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/WWII/products%20-%20WWII%2015mm%20-%20Landmark%20Buildings.html

They look ok on the web, but they look great next to models. A little bit of weathering and flocking and they will be perfect.

For Flames of War, 60% would probably be the minimum I would want, preferably. I've played on tables at tournaments that were probably 80% terrain. Some of them might have even been pushing 90%.

Terrain is really a key element in Flames of War and is one of the things that makes the game work so well with combined arms. More terrain is what makes things like infantry such a valuable asset. It isn't really the kind of game you would want to play on a 40k-esque table with 25% or less terrain. The more the better, really.

75% for Flames of War is probably a happy medium. I'll try to dig up some pics of good examples when I get a chance.

For Field of Glory, I haven't played it yet so I don't really know.

75% what? Like 75% covered? How do you do that when you have so
many tracked vehicles?

Yeah, 75% covered.

How do you do that? Lots of difficult terrain tests.

Haha, I'm sort of kidding. Not all terrain has to be difficult terrain. It sort of depends on the type of terrain though. I'm also including things like roads and fields that would be easy going for vehicles but provide concealment for things like infantry and man-packed guns, as well as things like hills, difficult terrain, buildings, etc. 75% terrain doesn't have to be 75% difficult or very difficult terrain, but there should definitely be some in there. A few impassable things like cliffs and such can make things interesting too (even more so if one side has mountaineer troops that can potentially cross "impassable" terrain).
