Just wondering how much crossover there really is amongst the wargaming hobby and other hobbies that get mentioned around here a lot... Multiple choice and for the sake of not listing a million hobbies, I've listed the most popular hobbies perceived by late night comedians as being geeky.

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

Hmmm, seems I could tick eight of those boxes.. is that a bad thing?

But aye..

CCG - Magic, Pokemon, Legend of the 5 Rings

RPGs - Probably do more of this at the moment than Wargamming, at least one game a week.

Non Miniature Board Games - loads

Video games - own a Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, Megadrive, Wii and Gameboy

MMORPG - check my sig

Action Figures - GI Joe and Star Wars

Comic Book - GI Joe, plus any X-based comic if I'm at a comic store.

LARP - not done it lately, but was once a ranked member at the Lorien Trust events in the UK.

"That's not an Ork, its a girl.." - Last words of High General Daran Ul'tharem, battle of Ursha VII.

I wish I could give half-checks. There are a few things I have done at one point or another, but haven't really kept up with. I can only manage so many hobbies at a time. At least without failing out of school and digging myself even further into debt (damnable student loans... grumble...). Have a few MTG decks I've put together over the few years I've played (scattered wildly over the past decade or so, due to the fickle base of opponents, which meant the cards were never in use for more than a few months before my friends lost interest again). Went to a few LARP events way back in middle school, but it was pricey and far away. Done a bit of fighting with a Markland group on campus (odd that Markland has a presence while the SCA doesn't...), but scheduling has repeatedly dashed any hope of regularity there, even with two practices a week (weather permitting). I've played D&D a decent bit (3/3.5), but my various groups always dissolved due to scheduling (notice a recurring theme, here? sigh...). Oh, and I do a bit of contact juggling, every now and then, but it's hard to practice regularly. I think that might count, too.

What I do manage right now with fluctuating intensity is wargaming (far more hobby than play, what with only a handful of opponents all as busy as I), video games (ah, consoles - for when I feel I can waste enough time to justify it over a 5 minute flash game distraction from studying), and MMOs (I play a free fantasy one (Rappelz), and have dappled with 2 free FPSes (CrossFire and Combat Arms)). The time distribution varies greatly, assuming I have any to spare, at all.

So, yeah... that gives me 7. Pretty damn nerdy. It works for me, though.

RPG's = D&D at the moment
Video Games = DoW, CoD(like i had to list this)
Other = Prop building/costuming

I think the next poll should be "How many non-geeky activities does the average 'nerd' partake in."

ie: Shooting sports, team sports, general out door activities, and such.

So does this prove that nerds branch out and do not become specialized in any one nerdy activity?

I agree with Morgan there should be another poll - I mean I'm sure nerds have lives outside of being geeks 24/7. Sports do exist.

I used to play videogames, now it's comics - but nowhere on that list is anime! I mean do the warhammer peeps dislike it too?

That's too bad cause there's so much good stuff. Anything by Hiyao Miyazaki like Princess Monoke, Steamboy, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle.

Then it gets darker like Akira, Ghost In the Shell, Vampire Hunter D.

There's comedy like Ranma 1/2, and Trigun.

Escaflowne, Vampire Knight, and Video Girl Ai for those who love romance.

Something for everybody if you look - I mean its not all pokemon and for the rest of us it's not all hentai either.

Still not sold?

I play D&D every second weekend, own a rather large collection of Yu-Gi-Oh cards which I've lost interest in, on the alternate weekends to D&D I play regular board games, I've also recently gotten back into computer games, I love my Tom Clancy games and DoW (saving up for number 2). I also do fencing but I don't consider the sport itself geeky, although a lot of fencers are geeks.

That's a similar problem to me. I have watched the Miyazaki stuff, and Ranma 1/2, Escaflowne, Trigun, etc. Neither the stories nor the animation style appeals to me. Out of that list, only Akira and GiTS appealed to me.

So I have a somewhat more limited selection of anime to chose from.

I play World of Warcraft TCG and believe it or not, I only have a trial account for World of Warcraft. It's true.
If that counts its an MMORPG, I think I play some other ones.
I also play Age of Empires, Guitar Hero 3 and some other stuff.

Total geek?

So I have to admit that I did like Akira and the Cowboy Beebop series, but I'd like to see more Hanna Barbara esque style animation, along the lines of the original Heavy Metal movie and the like. Ninja Scroll and Vamp D was pretty cool too.

I do lots of science geek stuff, if that counts. I'm best at organic and biochem, I have a friend who does engineering and phys chem, and another who does nanotech and analytical chem (although we've each overlapped into each other's fields at times). So we'll have long involved discussions on random topics, such as 'how to build a sucessful deathtrap' or 'what would be the best method of applying this perfectly legal substance I've just made that makes sniffer dogs think you're carrying cocaine' or 'if we were genetically modifying a winged lizard, how would we go about it and what would be the best way to do this bit of anatomy'?

I suspect these count. Somehow. Especially when it sometimes includes things on 'how to build a practical, real life power weapon'. Or a rail gun. (The latter tends to trip your circuit breaker and set fire to stuff. Oops. <.< )

I have over 1,000 comics sitting in the closet of my office. Oddly that same closet contains all my books (mostly science fiction or horror), and my entire anime collection. All my 40k stuff has spots on my desk, other than my terrain which lives in the closet. Other than the few models I might have on my desk at any given time, a person wouldn't know I do any of this stuff.

@Morgan It's JAPANimation. The whole reason I enjoy it because it's not americanized. Heavy Metal was produced in Canada - which would make this a culture comparison. (But I did forget Bebop which was good too)

@chromedog I also like the darker stuff too, but is the selection of stuff you enjoy limited because it's a guy thing? Im assuming so cuz you have actually watched the afore mentioned movies. It seems men as a general audience don't appreciate fluffier disney-esque or romantic shtick

I'm shocked by all the WoWplayers... didn't think it was that big.
