Has any one herd of the miniatrues game Malifaux? I know nothing about it but its becoming popular over 40k and warmachine at my FLGS.

It's a small skirmish game with a $30-$50 buy in that uses playing cards instead of dice. It combines a lot of different genres, the minis are awesome and the rules and game play aren't too shabby either.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

Victorian Horror = Promising
Steampunk = Off putting (for me)

I shall endeavour to find out more.

The main draw is that it's cheap, so people can grab a box and play. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars and spend months collecting.

As Bat Manuel said, it is a small skirmish game set in an alternate dimension that has elements of horror, steampunk, western and victorian era ambiance. The box sets are about $30-37 dollars, rulebook $35, special Fate Decks $7.50 each (but a regular deck of cards works as well).

The combat, etc., is based on using the cards to determine successes. You have both a Control Hand (to help you Cheat Fate) and "flips" from your deck. Some flips will involve more than one card, based on abilities or detrimental effects on your model. A score is determined, then both sides have a chance to Cheat Fate, starting with the lowest score. There's more to it than this, but that's a brief of the Fate Deck's use.

The models are nice, and though there are not an awful lot of scenarios (yet), the tabletop itself can have special elements of scenery that have differing effects on the gameplay. And there are "strategy" (I think that's what they are called) cards that each side takes to give them different goals during the battle. These will often get them more victory points... and if you announce certain strategies ahead of time, they'll be more difficult to achieve, but worth more points!

Anyway, hope this gives you a bit more incentive to check it out. I'm in the process of getting Malifaux up and running at a local game shop, and both the owner and I are excited at the prospects of this game.

It's a good game. There's about 8 or 9 people playing it now in my FLGS.

Having a hand of cards each turn that you can save for the important actions helps you control the random element in games a bit. Something akin to the effect of boosting in warmachine.

Plus, you can have every one of your models killed and still win - the store owner did it as he had completed one of his objectives to his opponents none.

I'm selling quite a bit of it at my shop.

The WM/Horde crowd is especially happy with it. Cheap enough that they can pick it up, a bit complicated which they like, small scale skirmish similar to WM. It fills a bit of a gap until Hordes MK2 hits, and they are taking a bit of a break from PP.

Decent miniatures, and I like the setting.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Very entertaining game in a setting that hasn't seen too much attention the Weird West. Like ALL skirmish games very small start up costs, seems to be selling almost instantly all over the states from what I am seeing. I have all but given up playing GW games unless it is a major tournament (adepticon), but I do play tons of skirmish games and so far this one seems to be catching a lot of attention.

Really good game and unlike alot of the starter sets you get you don't feel the need to ad tons more models after the 1st. Love the use of cards can make it very challenging. There's about 8 - 10 of use at my club that play it

I'm willing to give this a go. Anyone have a UK Stockist for it? Preferably online.

Wondering how I'll cope without the clatter of dice though!

It's a very solid skirmish game, as others have said. We managed to score an interview with the folks at Wyrd (company that makes Malifaux) at GenCon.

You can check that out here:
