Hi all
Been thinking of buying the new figure carrying case and have seen it in front of me for the first time yesterday. it has the three troop trays which is all fair enough, but I'm not convinced by the tank tray. it gave me the impression that if you used it for its full potential, like maybe 6 Rhino's for example, that it would become unastable and all the other pieces would end up coming loose anyway meaning that when you took tanks out the inserts inside would just drop all over the place.
Is it sturdier than my belief?
I have 3xSpeeders, 4xTanks and 4xDreadnoughts in total, and I'm wanting to store as many as possible like maybe all 4tanks, 2/3dreadnoughts and as many speeders (if any). ( and yes, I am aware that I can't fit all that in)
Anything else you guys can tell me about the case will be helpful before commiting to a £60 purchase, I couldn't find anything in the search on this topic which suprised me

If your talking about the GW one I wouldn't do it. Despite the looks of it, it holds very little in the way of tanks and what not also whatever foam they use to make it I have found to eat apart very easily. If you are willing to spend a little extra money go look at battlefoam as their is a lot of stuff they have that is excellent, and their foam trays are more specific to the army at hand.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Seconding Empchild, The GW cases have a nice 'protective look' to them, but they don't hold much and break rather easily.

In general, I wouldn't buy any case that has to be turned on its side for carrying. It's a clear sign the manufacturer has no idea what he's doing.

Cheers, must admit that despite seeing the battlefoam thread I had completely forgotten about it as an alternative when i came to look for a case many months later.
For me it was just a case of wanting all my eggs in one basket.
The case I'm currently using is this one ...
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9371874&fh_view_size=10&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB&fh_search=cases&fh_eds=%c3%9f&fh_refview=search&ts=1260456379517&isSearch=true
Its sturdy and comes with some handy inserts to stop things sliding. and the black tool tray in the lid is removable. It holds three trays easily and has a gap down the side that ironically is the width of a new style rhino. my Speeders can fit above the trays so that when closed, the lid presses slightly on them and stay in place unless jolted. My dreads are mismatched here and there and rattle cause I can't secure them with anything as it always moves about in transit.
So thats all fair enough, but the reason I wanted a bigger case was to fit my extra dreads my 4th tray of bikes and a few other tanks without needing another box that i need to keep a watch one when playing.
Glad my thoughts are well founded by others not liking the case

From what I hear this battlefoam company is quite expensive (and is based in the USA) seems like it's aimed at people who travel long distances with models, especially by air. I got my case from www.kaiserrushforth.com and I think it's pretty great. Their trays are more efficient than GW's, you can order any combination of foam trays you like to fit a case, I was overall quite impressed. Must say their website presents the whole deal in a very confusing way, but it's worth it.

I find KR to be rather expensive for what it is. At that point, you're better off making your own trays.

The Battle foam 1520 won't fit Airlines for carry on...
They have a new 720 sized case that will.
Also Battlefoam is very expensive, but you pay for what you get, high end carry cases and custom cut foam. They just recently added a UK distributor ( I think it was Wayland) so the Shipping cost won't be as much as some of the cases as it was previously.

I like the GW cases, and picked up one of the big new army cases. The pick and pluck foam seems pretty good quality. My complaint on it would be it has no built in bottom, and instead just sits on top of a sheet of thick egg crate foam so it ends up not being as deep as it could be. I figure I'll get an extra troop tray, remove the egg crate for normal flat foam, and it'll hold that many more guys.
If your tanks are just Rhino sized, and you don't have big banner poles on your Dreadnaughts, I think you Might be able to fit all of what you have into it, but you'd be looking at rather thin walls and I don't know how well it'd hold up at that point.
All in all I've always liked the GW cases, but I've never invested in Battlefoam. I think I'd like to trade the pick and pluck for a custom sheet of that, but not until I have enough stuff to fill it up. Until then what I've got gives me room to grow, which is important for an expanding army.

I owned a large GW case and found it flimsier than it looked. The plastic latches just weren't up to part. A lot of people like Battlefoam. I use the Sabol Army Transports and have been happy with them.

you can fit all that in a GW case... here's a breakdown of how I filled mine: bottom level: mid level: top level: this is using 2 infantry sides of foam... you cut it up to fit. Notice the dreads on the left, and the speeders on the bottom right. the vehicles on the right side take up most of the room between the foam and the plastic, so you put a thin sheet of foam over that to cover it... on the other side, you put the thick sheet of foam. you can fit a whole lot of army into one of these cases. I still upgraded to a pack 1520, but mostly because this case is too small for my whole army. (which is now grown past company level size)

Here's something I just tried and worked like a charm. I also was very interested in Battle Foam, but not so much the cases. I like rolling wheels and a sturdy box. Turns out Vaultz line of file chests (intended for hanging file folders) fits the battle foam trays perfectly. It's way cheaper than the backs, has locks, etc. I just got one today for my foam. It cost me $50 at Office Max. Some pictures...
The one box is holding a 6 inch tray with 2 Soul Grinders, Winged Greater Deamon, Deamon Prince, and another GD. On top of that I have a three inch tray filled with Juggernauts, flesh hounds, another DP, and some misc large models, on top of that is a 1 inch tray that could in theory hold around 50 normal size troop models. The trays come in and out easily with maybe 1/8 inch around the sides to spare. I'd swear that it was built for battle foam trays.

This is what I tend to use - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=36796 - Despite the price listed, you can often find Maplin shops selling these for £15. It comes with foam, although to be useful you do need to split the foam block in half, which can be a touch tricky. It's somewhat larger than the small GW case, but obviously not as big as the larger ones.

I put in another thread that camera cases are the way to go. The quality is great, but you pay less since the market is not as small as wargaming. Of course battlefoam and the like provide great quality, but if you don't have the cash then I would suggest getting a professional carrying case not designed for miniatures. I got mine for 2/3 the price of the battlefoam and it will fit 9 MC's and approximately 40 medium sized creatures (warriors/zoanthropes/tyrant guard) OR loads of little guys.

That is in fact exactly what happens. However, that hasn't stopped me from using them for the full potential anyway. When the vehicles are in their slots it holds the foam in place between them. If that's not good enough for you a little hot glue could be used to hold the errant dividers in place, even gluing the large block to the sheet foam below it at a few key points to keep things from shifting.

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.
Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

I got the GW one for Christmas, I wouldn't say the tank section is bad, depending what you want it for.
for IG or SM tanks it would be perfect. I however am trying to use it for eldar, and can only just manage to get 3 vypers, a wave serpent and a falcon in it. and that's the absolute limit of what you can get in when the vehicles aren't rectangular.

That Vault Case looks awesome except for one thing: no handle on top? Do you have to carry it via the side handles?

Ok now that I actually clicked the link I see it has a rolling handle. Still wish it had a top handle!
