So, I've decided to start blogging my IG force, as it might encourage me to hurry up and paint it, the scratch built baneblade having taken over my life (or, as the wife puts it "Aww. You're ignoring your little men.")

Briefly, the rationale was to use as much of the generic sci-fi infantry that I had lying around (mostly Urban War) and buy/indulge my tread-head tendencies without spending too much.

I decided to go for a grim, gritty look loosely based off german field grey (which is more a green). Respirators, backpacks and night-goggles are de rigeur. The whole army's on D-style bases, as (a) I like them (b) the urban war figs are already on them.

Starting with the Commissar, which is a Urban War vet sergeant plus bits:

I love these snipe models, and had an old gw one in my bits box too:

The Sentinels are both salvaged from bits, and I like the scout having different "faster" legs:

(Obviously, paintjobs are unfinished)

Russ was a decent priced ebay buy, spiced up a bit (I now realise my camera has a smudge on the lens!)

Hydra was a bright pink and purple stripey disaster of a chimera (built back to front, no less, las cannons through the rear hatch) that cost me £3.

Griffon was its zebra friend:

I love how this has turned out, especially the angry dozer blade - again, lots of bits box salvage work here (I found a griffon cannon in there - who knew?!)

Chimera was another ebay purchase, red and gold this time:

Love the new bane wolf, so that was a treat to myself:

For Straken, I decided that I wasn't paying those prices, so a viridian commando, bits and green stuff later:

More to come folks!

This is looking really fantastic. The whole army has a really unified look to it through that really unique paint scheme. What colours are you using, and how are you doing it (drybrushing, I presume)?

I'm especially impressed at your salvaged vehicles, particularly the ones with the awful colour schemes you picked up on eBay. Did you take any pictures of the original paint jobs?

Cheers for the comments folks - Traitor especially, big fan, means a lot to hear that from you.

Colour scheme is indeed over primer & drybrush (Codex Grey), using MP's Deep Bronze Green (Best. Paint. Ever!), MP Khaki and Codex Grey again, blended with MP Black and White - their paints are very thin, great for blending and layers. I kept the photos of the god-awful pink 'n' purple from ebay somewhere, I'll have a hunt.

Also had a shot at making a Harker from a void commando:

Consider this idea stolen.

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time.

Just a bit knights of cydonia has been soundtrack to much of the project, but only just settled on it for the army. I'm sure one tank will be Absolution, and I'll probably get some other gratuitous references in there.

So, further on the Muse theme:
I'm wondering what Muse tracks to assign to each tank and, whether to translate various song names into latin (in that lovely imperial fashion).
Vehicles in the army thus far, plus possible names:
Baneblade - Apocalypse Please or Invincible
Chimera - Soldier's Poem
Bane Wolf - Citizen Erased
Hellhound - Sunburn
Command Russ - Sing for Absolution
Executioner/Punisher - Assassin
Vendetta - Time is Running Out (possibly dubiously translated to Tempus Fugit)
Scout Sentinel - Uprising
Armoured Sentinel - Resistance

Thoughts?

I think some of them don;t translate well, but as a Muse fan, I like what you're going for with the scheme. I modified the quote with what I'd name them. I think people will get the joke, even if some of them aren;t named exactly the same as the song.

Nice one, cheers mate. Especially like the suggestion for the command russ. I still quite like Falling Down for the Hydra, given what it does to grav-tanks.

I'll throw up (bleurgh) some latin translations (my latin is pretty rusty) tonight if I get 5, and let folk chew on them.

It's a good description of what it does, yeah. But when you name it that, makes it seem like your Hydra's doing the falling. That'd definitely be one of the ones I'd look at Latinizing. Maybe: 'Makes Them Fall Down" in latin, or doing that thing with romance languages that makes words mean different things by using different endings. (I failed latin class and I haven;t slept all night. )

Given all my Latin comes from Dinosaur names I can't help much! Recognised the reference though. Some really nice Ebay scavenging as well!

Knights? That'll be the rough riders I'm thinking of using urban war saurians (dinos in gas masks - freakin' awesome, but I've only got one just now). The whole "9th" is just a weak pun on knights anyway. My Latin is very ropey but here goes:

Apocalypse - Terminus Mundi
Eraser - Deleo
Guiding Light - Lux Lucis
Glorious Belief - Glorificus Fides
Uprising - Insurrectus
Absolution - Cantate ut Absolutus Estis
Sunburn - Solis Infernis
Assassin - Interfector
Resistance - Pugnatus Sunt
Hysteria - Furor

Ok, going to try to upload most of the army tonight (prepared for pic heavy tedium). English beer (London Pride, a taste of home, oh yes) and Muse as a soundtrack - nice. Also, please bear in my mind that very few of these are properly painted, even the ones close to resembling half decent (I'll post some of my fully painted at some point, and then you can mock me... I changed how I was snapping the pics, more light (a rosey glow, indeed) and on my workstation.

Executioner/Punisher - I decided, having built an Executioner (nice kit, actually) that I could do with gunning down hordes of Orks, so threw together a Punisher turret in a night. Really happy with the result; but, actually, propelled me on to more scratchbuilding (which, eventually, will be the fate of the demolisher cannon).

Vendetta - I love the Vulture, just love it, and when my FLGS owner gave me 20% of his last one, I knew I had to do it justice. I had a ton o' lascannons from the aberration that was the pink 'n' purple tanks, and like that level of shooty death. Its base is a WIP in iteself, with a khornate chaos marine lurking at the back (once it's painted up, be far more obvious).

Storm Troopers - this is a sample (rest in gallery) of the minis I'm thinking of for storm troopers: Space Tommies. I love the models, though I wonder if they're quite right. Possibly, respirators might give them more of cohesive feel with the rest of the army. Opinions very much sought in this regard.

Bastone - this is another puzzler for y'all. I didn't like his original hand, hence the unpainted one. I also wonder if the pose is quite right; whether he should be rigid, straight up, rather than Action Bastone. I have a great Napoleonic over the shoulder cape I was thinking of using for him if so.

Medics - Despite the one on the right looking like he's been at the medicinal brandy, I'm fond of these chaps.

Company Commander - Rather more David Bellamy than Matt Bellamy, but there we are. Obviously, the paint job is nowhere near finished. This is a combination of Cadian legs and Catachan torso to get the altered proportions.

Platoon Commanders - Think the two differing sources for the models don't look obvious:

Master of Ordanance - sometimes, you just need a really big antenna.

Bodyguards - these are Lictors from Void (because no game worth its salt doesn't have pyschotic penal legions) which seem to really fit the feel of the army:

Plasma Guns - for some reason, the photo makes the one on the left look like his face has melted. Odd. Very happy with the scratchbuilt (green/grey stuff) plasma gun on the other guy: getting the straight, ridged lines was a mystery until I accidentally held it with the wrong pliers, and voila. Seeing them side by side, I hope it shows that the (largely) plastic cadian and urban war figures don't look incongruous together.

More later - coffee calls...

Ok, so an overdue update. I seem to spend more time modelling and not much painting, but oh well. A couple of new pics:

I stole ArbitorIan's excellent idea of using Junker Legionnaires for Penal troops. I've built mine slightly differently, all with the buzz cut/respirator head and no shoulder pads, so they're a bit more rough and ready, and with chopped lasguns to boot. Here's a couple of them:

I think I'll probably use the bodyguards as penal enforcers, as that's exactly what they are anyway...

The lovely wife got me a Salamander for crimbo, so it's progressing nicely (the wreath was at her insistence that I include something festive [sigh])

I've decided also to add some =I= splash into the army, based (mostly) off Urban War shock marines that I had lying about. So, a Callidus WIP:

I have an Inquisitor on the go, and to contrast with the dark and dingy scheme, I though I'd go with something striking, based off one of my Helldorado minis (appreciate thoughts on this as a =I= scheme):

Okay, so, marching onwards. Camerawork's a bit shoddy, sorry, wife's camera easier to use in a hurry than mine!

My habit of buying very badly trashed tanks on ebay led me to a wrecked hellhound. Some bitz, grey stuff and pen lids later:

Having actually played with the Salamander, I felt that a dozer blade was called for. It felt redundant on the Griffon, tbh, and it's nice to have the funky plough on the command tank:

I wasn't happy with my kitbashed punisher turret, but neither was I keen on the plain demo-variant turret either, hence (raided from mechwarrior):

On the subject of dissatisfaction, I just wasn't sold on my Bastone, so came up with this out of odds and ends:

Much, much happier - hurrah for preposterous swords!

The previous bastone did however, give me an idea for my PBS, so this led to the following:

Need to trim back some of the fists slightly, but still, really pleased. They are mostly pistolier cloaks, flagellant bits, and cadian odds and ends. They still need gs wiring in the noggins, too. I've got 3 more, but they're currently legless (not from booze, I hasten to add...)

Head for this guy is from Dark Sword's Sandor Clegane model, a thing of beauty (go on Tom Meier). I added a pouch to all of them with the tubes for a respirator protruding; this allowed them to fit the general aesthetic (respirators for all!) but both be a bit more expressive and let me use the masks elsewhere.

Think that's off a tomb king banner.

Much more of an experiment. DKOK legs, cloak from a Perry napoleonic; the "old man" of the unit.

Just a plain ol' nutter

And lastly, Handsome Jack.

As part of the grand model recycling, I'm also resurrecting as many i-kore/void models as possible. I'm very fond of Harker, and felt he needed suitable vets to go with him. So, Viridian Commandos+Junker Shotguns and varying amounts of gs lead to:

Last guy still needs some of the gs filed down, obviously. Quick head swap so they all have helmets (flamer dude's is attached to belt at rear).

And finally, a splash of =I=. I love the Urban War Shock Marines and Interdicts, so they're forming the core of my Inquisitor's retinue:

Dreadful photo, unfinished but you get the idea!

Anyway, I'll endeavour to post more anon...
C&C welcome as always folks

I have no idea how to alter the topic line, I realise...

Anyhoo, a wee update:

(1) So, I'm making more Death Riders. I want to have (a) a full unit (b) a couple of special weapon options (c) a wallet that's not entirely empty but for tumbleweeds.

Empire outriders are providing the horses:

A couple of leftover bits from wonky model replacements provide extra rebreather and cannisters; but I've only got another one each of these, so the other two clip-clops will needs scratch/gs/improvisation.

The torsos from the riders are from a centaur grenadier crew (the centaur was a saga of its own...), the legs from ikore Junkers repositioned:

I actually think I like the melta bomber most...

Finally, the rest of the pbs:
Pious John -

And Big Angry Mike -
