Hmmm... sabre guard and sacred fangs are both good. Their "secret sign" to each other could be the John Cleese thing from Holy Grail where he's using his fingers to show the teeth on the vorpal bunny!

Am I just being dense but why not just call them the Sabres. Everyone knows they're are a chapter you don't need to have it in their name. And aren't native American names based on characteristics and not genealogies like in Europe. So that would rule out Son's of... and Emperor's..., correct me if I'm wrong Templarboy.

Yeah. Native American names tend to be descriptive or indicative of nature. Unfortunately, most names like "Redfeather" or "Running Brook" are toast. The "sons of" sort of thing could be descriptive. My last name is Elrick which is Scotish. My maternal Grandmother was straight off the reservation in Canada and I look like a generic American. The blood is very thin in the US. The same thing will happen with the Natives in Australia eventually.
What would be cool is to name the chapter something totally fluffy for 40k but make the models primitive. The dichotomy would be neat.

@templarboy - Australian Aborigines are quite different from Native Americans. Times are also different. Having said that 'eventually' I suppose can be a very very long time.

At OP, love the project and think the effort definately worth while. Outstanding work.

Of the chapter names suggested I like Emperor's Pride, for the dual meaning (tho genmod are out, no? or a well-kept secret?). I also like Sabre Wolves 'cause they're cooler Space Wolves and so is that name.

I think you already have it though, BLACKHAND: Sabretooth Marines. Booya.

I would stay away from Sabre Wolves myself personally as the Smilodon was feline not lupine, I think you may have already covered that.

The idea of Sabre-toothed lions for the name was bothering me, so I looked it up and as I thought, they are commonly described as Sabre-toothed tigers or cats but not as lions. Also that they are not of the same subspecies as today's big cats but have there own category; Smilodontini.

Although it does sound a little more like a trendy drink rather than a fearsome SM chapter.

Keep it up can't wait till it's finished.

Always liked sabre-toothed things in cartoons before even tho Im not into comics nor half man half animal things, but the sabre theme is really cool, especially cuz your gonna use the space wolf codex!

Prides is a great way to describe them too! Would be good to some how properly reprint the space wolf codex at home and change the page art to all yellowey sandy colours and change all the names and use your models in the photos, but thats just ridiculous fantasy and everyone would probably like to do that with their own armies lol.

What about Sabre's Pride? Maybe add some fluff about the chapter following the methods of a great warrior being named Sabre. Not like his actual name but what he was known as and what struck fear into the enemy?

Are you planning to put any tanks in, if so they would be open to all kinds of converting

If you did decide to use fluff similar to Manchu's suggestion, you could call them Logan's Creed. A slightly mutated chapter redeemed by the decree of Logan Grimnar. And it makes a nice play on words with Weapon X/Logan and Sabertooth/Victor Creed.

Hey loyal readers, sorry for the silence, my local gaming club haqs caught Necromunda fever and I have been busy organising terrain projects and helping aspiring gang leaders to scrap their first gangers from the underhive barrel and get to cracking heads!

But thats not why you are here..no you are here for Marines!

First off thanks to everyone who has posted suggestions and ideas on chapter names, its been immensely gratifying and humbling to know how many people out there are watching my little thread and have enough interest in it to make a post, thanks again!

After a weekend agonizing and consulting with friends I came up with a final list of names...

Sabre Guard

Sabre Legion

Emporer's Pride

and as is usually the case, one of the first names I had (I'm not sure where it came from, me, a friend or from the thread) kept coming to the fore, it just seemed to feel right for the chapter and rolled off the tongue so to speak.


So, finally, I decided on THE SABRE LEGION!!!

That said, the ideas from the thread have been invaluable and will be used in the army where possible.

For exmple,

Grey Hunters = Huntmasters

Squad = Pride

Lion Guard = Sabre Guard (not sure about that one yet)

Rune Priest = Sacred Fang

and my chapter master will be accompanied by an honour guard called "the Sons of Creed"

As for whats on the modelling front I am currently working on a moderately biggerised terminator as a test model for the Sabre Legion and I hope to have some pics of him up by the weekend. I hate to admit though, thanks to the necromunda explosion at the club, that work on the Legion will slow down for a while.

Don't worry, I will not forget my furry battle brothers!!

Happily it has given me a bit of inspiration for my Sabre Legion so as I post WIP shot on the marine swap forum I will double post it here as well

Here he is standing atop a half buried Giant Sabretooth skull, the left leg has been cut and reposed and has the usual Sabre Legion Purity Feathers and he has the Sabre Guard shoulder pads which signify his veteran status.



this is a fairly terrible shot of his medicine bag (kroot sprue) and his various sabreteeth and feather tokens (kroot prue again - love that sprue!)

I'm still here Blackhand. That marine looks great!! I really am looking forward to seeing a full armies worth of units.

As usual Blackhand, it looks amazing. My only suggestion is that I think the left foot sticks out a little much from the leg. I think more of the foot would be covered within the context of the lower leg armor... love the pose though.

Love his bulky shoulder guards, really gives him a menacing profile!

@Tony_nids - lol, still not sure I want to do a full army but at least the Great Marine Swap gives me the chance to model as few or as many as I want.

@Gitspltta - I know the pic makes it look like the foot is sticking WAY out there but in RL its not so bad and the back of the foot is in the same place as on the right foot, I will see how it goes when I put a basecoat on him and if it does look funny I will do a bt of surgery and move it back a couple of mls.

@Vitruvian - I wasn't sure about having the two lionpads on a normal sized marine but it seemed like the thing to do if he is going "on loan" to another chapter

@ Tim the Biovore - Good to have you here as always Tim, you don't collect marines BTW?


Thanks guys for the comments, it's been nice to have a break from Marines but I forgot how much I love adding the Sabre Legion touches to the stock marines and bringing out character... though i must say I moved so fast on this one that I forgot to name him! Maybe that honour should go to Whalemusic though?

Well, you already have your name, but might I suggest you have a "King" instead of a Chapter Master, who pays homage ot the King of Kings? (The Emperor)

Also, a fable about how the Emperor removed a thorn from a lion's paw might not be too inappropriate, as long as there was a suitably grimdark twist of subduing said lion before removing the thorn. (The Lion would then have become the King of King's favourite pet, and eventually inspired the chapter, of course!)

References to King and Armour King from Tekken also then become possible.

Some reference to Lions as Apex Predators might be cool.

You already have Lion Guard. Presumably you will have equivalents for Blood Claws and Long Fangs, although these names barely need changing. They could potentially be something to do with manes. Short/Long manes for example. Grey Hunters could be Gold Hunters, etc, etc...

Presumably with a Native AMerican slant, you will have variants of Shamen instead of Rune Priests/Wolf Priests/Iron Priests?

Companies as Prides instead of Packs/Companies?
