Godzilla vs kong will hopefully be like other hero smash up movies. They punch for a bit and then they're mates. Cyborg ghidorah or something else being the real bad guy.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Yes, that's my hope too.

Plus it looks like Skull Island will soon become Monster Island...

Did Godzilla make enough money for there to be a G vs. KK? I thought the results were supposed to be very disappointing?

It turned a profit, but I suspect was not as financially successful as hoped. It made less money than the 2014 film. They're definitely doing G v. KK, but I suspect the future of the franchise (Legendary's that is) will probably depend on how well that film does. If it sees similar returns to King of the Monsters I wouldn't be surprised if they just stopped.

I'm thinking that Kong's race maybe aren't even Titans at all.

Almost $400 million worldwide on a $108 million budget. Even after around $100 million in marketing that's a success, even if not the blockbuster they hoped for.

It still bodes poorly for the longevity of the monsterverse though - less than Skull Island, also.

This seemed one of those situations where the film actually did alright financially but since it wasn't SUPER BLOCKBUSTER ONE BILLION DOLLARS opening weekend a lot of stories pretended it did terrible.

Finally saw this puppy on da streamin.

Wow. Its like they took everything that made Kong Skull Island popular and good shoved out an airlock. KOng was good as the storyline was simple and all action revolved either with humans being attacked by monsters or monsters attacking other monsters. Thats what we want.

Incredibly stupid plot. Needless human actors. Needless human action. NO characters that anyone should care about. Most of the movie had action scenes that were 1) bad; and 2) didn't involve actual monsters. Even more infuriating, whenever the monsters started fighting, they would cut away to stupid human stuff.

Unless reviews for Kong vs. Godzilla are epic, I am done with this series. Its just stupid.

It's not nearly as bad as Frazzled makes it out to be - though it might be a bit low on the HAWT CHIX factor for M. Morden - but I am biased and love me some Kaiju.

If you're a fan of the genre, it was definitely worth seeing in the theater.

I'm still all in on this series, and looking forward to Kong v. Godzilla.

Honestly, I thought there was plenty of kaiju action. Much more than the previous film. It felt like a response to those who complained about that one, a more human-centric film. (Which actually WAS the format of classic Godzilla flicks -- humans front and center with Big G not showing up until halfway through. But I digress.) "This time we'll give you more monsters, and human stories that won't distract you!"

Honestly having seen both of Legendary's Godzilla movies I'm not sure what it is the detractors are looking for? They're very much love letters to the Toho movies, and King of the Monsters manages to lean into that aspect even harder between the use of the classic theme songs, the child of destiny with a suitcase sized maguffin, suicidal scientists of all stripes, Mothra's magic twins, and multiple loud and bassy monster fights throughout the film.

If there's anything to be disappointed by, it's that they were too fanservicy in that respect - Godzilla 2014 asked what would happen if a Godzilla VS film happened in the real world and not the zany world of later Godzilla films - the answer in KotM is that the would would become that zany world of the Godzilla films. I half expect Charles Dance to show up in the sequel claiming to be an alien from Jupiter.

Maybe I finally need to watch Skull Island? But I had heard it was awful...

Most people really haven't actually seen many Godzilla films. They are culturally aware of them, but haven't actually sat and watched them. They have a pretty legendary reputation and people expect a lot more than they would otherwise.

I think 2014 had a miserable human story but some of the best monster moments in the franchise. King has some beautiful shots that are sadly mostly spoiled in the trailers, and a far more even human plot, but didn't hit the highest points of its predecessor for me. I think both suffer from being too long.

Yeah, King had more monster action compared to 2014, but 2014 had the best specific moments of monster action. Nothing in King topped that finishing move from Godzilla in 2014 for example.

Exactly. It was as if they had learned nothing from the criticism of the previous film. Its not like they were saving money. The non monster scenes had a lot of expensive CGI as well.
EDIT: There was a good bit of monster action, but every time it got going it would be completely interrupted by human nonsense.

Also, stating there were a lot of bits shouting out to other Godzilla movies does not make it a good film. Most Godzilla movies are hot garbage. (the original being quite awesome of course).

Maybe. I really like how they did it in King of the Monsters, with the countdown of Godzilla melting down for 12 minutes or so. It made me think "Man, I'm glad they didn't try nuking Gozilla in the first movie!" The 2014 movie really edited it down to the cool parts, which is why I think people were so disappointed with the amount of Godzilla screen-time despite it being pretty average for a Godzilla film: The bits they saw were so cool (so well set-up, framed, etc) that they felt like they were missing out. In King of the Monsters it was something of a reminder that Godzilla is also a capital-M Monster.

Kong Skull Island was pretty darn good. However, it definitely fits in a specific niche.

For me, Godzilla vs Minster Zero is one of the best Godzilla movies ever because the human characters are charming, cool, weird, even silly, but never boring. For many modern audiences, the human plot elements and dialogue would be too hokey or campy to enjoy. That's where Kong Skull Island sits. It is a much more modern film with better pacing, acting and effects, but the human characters are essentially the same mix of tropes and character sketches that imight feel hokey, but never boring. If you couldn't stand Monster Zero, you might not like Kong Skull Island.

Agreed!

But at least this time, we think we know that Frazz 'saw'* the movie.

I definitely have a higher opinion of the film than Frazz.

But I agree with his core critique. The human characters and action did not improve the movie, and often, were the primary element holding the film back.

Wife and daughter were banging around in the kitchen (this week the daughter has multicolored hair) and front room so I was awake.
There was a fat wiener dog demanding a belly rub though.

Its annoying because they could have cut a bit and made it so much better, or just allowed the monster sequences to be strung together properly and quit breaking them up.

I watched the old Godzilla movies when i was a child - including the giant crab thing catching rocks and throwing them at stuff, - they were ok I guess, back then.

The last Godzilla movie I hated, but loved Kong - are the directors and style intentionally so different?

I would not have minded the human centric stuff in the first Gozilla movie if any of the characters had been any good and the story for them was not so bad.

I would include
Spoiler:
the meltdown scene
from this one right up there in terms of sheer coolness - as well as a bit of fan service from Godzilla vs Destroyah.

I don't wholly agree with Frazzled. I think what he is saying about them cutting away from the monsters as soon as the action started was a totally fair rap for the 2014 film, but I don't think it applied here at all. That being said, every scene with the humans in it really did suck. I don't think you can make a movie with kaiju banging on each other for 2 hours and have it work - it would get boring pretty quick. So, you have so have humans for an overarching plot, such as it is, and some sense of scale and consequence and tension. They have got to do a better job with the human-centric writing. The cast wasn't bad but they were doing stupid lame stuff the entire time and the dialogue was also awful.

I am an enormous Godzilla fan, so I loved the movie. I am highly biased. I could definitely see the criticisms a non-fan would have because they are fair criticisms - not the least of which that the entire movie seems to have been run through an automated color grading software that turned everything blue with occasional pops of orange.

Completely agree with Frazz, King of the monsters was total garbage. I found myself checking the time constantly in the last hour just waiting for it to be over. I don't know how you make a film about giant monsters fighting each other boring but... well done, I guess.

I feel like they learned the lesson that people actually wanted to see the monsters fight on screen rather than off-screen (as in the 2014 film), but then they completely diluted the experience with an awful and stupidly pointless family drama that kept interrupting the action and worsened the whole experience.

Seriously. The mom's motivations make absolute jackall in the sense department, and the main villain's goons become precisely the right amounts of stupid at precisely the right points to keep the story going and the little girl was so predictably dumb and oh god there's so many things wrong with everything here that we could make a whole thread about just that.
