The latest legal developments regarding BBLRB6 (that's a mouthful) and its volunteers has me feeling nostalgic for some good old fashioned GW hate. Does anyone have US WD 300 or AU WD 301 in which Pete Haines, out of nowhere, rants at the online community? It's under his Marines in the Movies article. If anyone can type up a transcript of that 'digression' I'd appreciate it.
Bonus points for any other fan-fethery anyone can come up with. Paul Sawyer's first steps online spring to mind.

I do have that issue, and will ahve to dig ti up when I get home me thinks. Interesting thing on paul sawyer is when he solid his white scars army on ebay squad by squad. Made a small fortune and pissed off the higher ups. After that they created their heavy handed employee sales policies.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I thought Paul didn't sell off his Scars until after he got sacked by the higher ups?

If the army was built & painted on company time as condition of hire, using company-provided paint, tools, & glue, then GW would have some right to control sales of sort of thing.

I skimmed that article and then threw the issue in the trash. I thought the whole "Movie marines" thing was a smartass barb at the people who think Space Marines should get some serious buffs and commensurate increase in points cost so that they would be inline with their fluff. But Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GW has to sell loads of miniatures, so they ignore the fluff. It's the same crap as when they dumbed down Chaos Warriors and Beastmen. (Chaos warriors used to have 2 attacks, and Beastmen used to have 2 base attacks. Or it might be the reverse, it's been so long I'm not sure.) Anyway, they write all this awesome fluff, and then they ignore it. (All Orks should have FNP, all Eldar should have WS, BS and I of at least 5, Space Marines except for scouts should have some sort of invulnerable save, two wounds and either WS or BS of 5 based on their speciality, should have some sort of special rule that combines stubborn and fearless but with no drawbacks, and should have their points cost TRIPLED!!!) You read right. Hate GW? We couldn't possibly hate them more than they hate themselves.

Yup, I'm pretty sure they went on sale after he had left. And the rules against employees selling off minis that they had bought with their staff discounts had been in place for years before that.

That's reeeaaalllyyy tempting. If only they had done the marines truescale, then they would be even more popular than they are now, and GW would sell enough that it wouldn't matter that they are outnumbered by everybody 4/1.

@warpcrafter: Marines were embiggened in 3E, so as long as you stick with non-Marines being their RT/2E versions, Marines will look more "truescale" than not.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I don't see any valuable point in bringing up Movie Space Marines. It's water under the bridge so to speak and we could all use our time and resources on more positive aspects of the hobby. The article was a satire as far as I am concerned. If you must whine about Pete Haines then why not pick more credible instances of abuse of his former position as a developer such as the old Iron Warriors which were really broken or how he shafted the Thousand Sons? Come on, Ahmiran did not even have a power weapon let alone a force sword. In all my thousands of games of 40k I only remember one instance of a player ever fielding Ahmiran. Lucius used to really be the hotness way before special characters became so popular, you still occassionally see people fielding Kharn and Typhus though. What's up wif that?

Who's whining about Movie Marines? I want the part of the article where he takes a shot at all of us since it's been so long since I've read it. There's a German translation out there, but it's funny for all the wrong reasons.

Spacegoat, I believe this is the paragraph you were looking for...
"Given the number of times I am asked for an 'official ruling' on something, it would seem that the only permissible variants to the printed rules are those with an 'official' stamp. This is, of course, total garbage. My secret wish is to have a week's diplomatic immunity from answering questions sensibly and politely (or even honestly). Then you would see carnage and anarchy on a level that would make Attila the Hun weep with envy. Global internet traffic would surge. Power grids would crash, and countless vital spam mails would not arrive. But fear not, dear readers. No such weeks are in the immediate plans"

Issue 300 is the only issue I still have. I threw the rest in the recycle bin. The tone of the article makes it clear that anyone that uses the list is a S.O.B and and should be painfully punished. If he meant it as a joke it fails, since the tone is exactly GW's opinion.
Movie Marines can be a lot of fun. Some friends and I played a 6,000 pt game with them. 3 squads of marines and 1500 pts of Guard vs 6,000 pts of Tyranids. It was a blast and something we plan on doing again in the future.

You read right. Hate GW? We couldn't possibly hate them more than they hate themselves.
I partly agree, they greatly ignore their fluff, but Eldar nor SM need higher stats by default. The Eldar with good stats are the Aspect Warriors, following the path of the warrior, Guardians are militia, so don't have big fighting skills, that's what the aspect warriors are for. Space Marines might have a use for 2 wounds to better reflect their super human toughness and 2nd heart (and should be doubled in price for that).
About WFB chaos getting dumber, I partly applaud GW for that, Chaos was way too powerfull before 6th ed. A Chaos Warrior had WS6, S and T 4, I 6 and 2 attacks and LD 8 or 9. for a mere 21 points* with just default armour (heavy)! They could out-fight any man-sized champion, and those champions were worth at least 10-20 points more. CW's could be taken as marauder champions, and who wouldn't use them that way considering a normal marauder champion was twice the cost of a Chaos Warrior with lower stats!? It also meant that a Chaos Lord had stats to match a deamon prince/greater deamon and chipped in at 363 points with only heavy armour. Beastmen on the other hand, had one attack but 2 wounds (the Gors). They were hard to kill but had little armour and lacked a lot of the flavour they got in 6th edition. In effect, before that time they were just Brown Orcs (and goblins- Ungor)....
heh, imagine a regiment of Chaos Warriors with the Mark of Khorne in the 4th/5th edition rules... Frenzy used to double attacks... That's right, rank and file troops that fight as good as a human Lord, Elf/Dwarf Hero or Orc Warboss... now, is that reasonable?
Chaos' high points values evened it out a bit, but the Gifts and Rewards system they used to have was NASTY: I kill your warmachine with this card, you can't do nothing about that, all your Ironbreakers armour rots away with this card, no, you can't dispel, my Khornate Chaos warriors are mutated with this card and now have an additional attack (=6 attacks per model due to frenzy!), no it's still gifts and rewards you can't dispel.
I fully understand why Chaos got nerfed, It had too much powergaming potential. You can still get close to the old style chaos stats by making units Chosen (+1 attacks innit?).
Sometimes toning down stats and options helps the game. Not everyone likes to fool around making house rules and changing stuff on it's own.
*in 3d ed. they were 60 points a-piece, which was quite fair considering their fighting abilities, but as the point-build system was altered/dropped in 4th, their naked cost dropped to 18 points.

The problem with hyping everyone's stats is you end up with a game where the objective is basically to roll fewer 1s than the other side.
