i love the game fallout 3 and i was looking for an interesting conversion project to improve my modeling skills. so i decided i would convert some warhammer minis to fit in with the fallout imagery. my modeling prowess is limited so they are not heavily converted, just altered slightly.
i have no plan to play with these models, im just making one off squads and models for the fun of it.
any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated
the first group i am making is of soldiers in power armour. the basic template is of a space marine without shoulderpads or backpack and with all emblems filed off. some old embarrisingly horrible looking dark eldar have been hacked apart to give me the new shoulders. the back has a filed down tau grenade and guitar wire replacing the backpack.
i have put together 5 miniatures so far:
Brotherhood w/ laser pistol and grenade
Brotherhood w/ assault rifle
Outcast w/ laser pistol and grenade
Outcast w/ laser pistol and ripper
and a mini based on my character, a bearded guy with Ashur's power armour, chinese assault rifle and ripper
this acted as my test model, the paint job is a very simple drybrush of boltgun metal and mithril silver over black basecoat with details and rust effects in tin bitz. drybrushing seems to be a suitable method to get the old, battered, worn metal effect that i was aiming for but my technique needs work, which became apparent as i took photos. the front of the pistol is unpainted as i decided to clip off the end of the plasma pistol after painting to make it look more square.
the assault rifle is made from a lasrifle with the ammo thing removed and replaced with a boltgun clip. the stock has been cut to fit the marine's arm and so appears as if it disappears into his arm, dont worry its just a glitch where the weapon was not designed to fit with all of the different outfits
on the outcast models i have added scratches and bullet holes using my hobby knife.
this model is based on protector casdin, the leader of the outcasts hence the bare catachan head.
this mini required the most work and i am most proud of. the head is from the chaos marauders as is his cow skull which was altered from some kind of demon skull, remove the teeth and angry brow, add horns and you got a cow skull. the arms are also mixed with marauder arms. his chinese assault rifle is a lasrifle with a bigger bolt clip added kroot rifle stock and plasticard added to increase bulk.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

i have many plans ahead of me but progress is slow :(
for raiders i will use a catachan marauder mix, i have already blu tacked a few together and they fit alright, may need to get some greenstuff for gaps tho.
for deathclaws the new chaos spawn sprue looks good and also Gulavhar,The Terror of Arnor in LOTR is pretty much a deathclaw with wings, i just dont know how easy it will be to convert.
i havnt really made any plans for supermutants yet, there not one of my favourite characters. lol
btw people have thought of this before, i found a few threads by typing fallout in the painting/modeling forum search

Nah huh i thought of it when fallout 1 came out!
but yeah i was dismayed a little when i found out others had already thought of this idea but its been good seeing how others have approached it, and its good to be able to share ideas. I might "share" some ideas from Proiteus and his feral humans, for my raiders.
on a side note i couldn't mention proiteus without mentioning his awesome themed army the grot rebellion which is a brilliant army with tons of character.

Those look pretty good, man. Ashur is especially cool. Fallout is one of the best resources for inspiration.
Good work.

for raiders why not use a uch simpler idea? necromunda orlcoks, escher and err the muscled ones whos names escape me. gorgoroths? hulks? goliaths? none seem to be the right one i dont think....
anyways im not sure about the hellmets tbh, why not convert them to look less space mariney, or use pig iron heads?

Man, the way that those DE shoulderpads and the removal of the backpacks change familiar old powerarmor is really, really refreshing. Good work. I'm going to nick that backpack replacement idea for traitor stormtrooper torso armor, if you don't mind.

Yeah i looked at necromuda gangs but they all seem to be too well equipped and clean for raiders, and i wanted to convert them to make them my own anyway. Goliath gang really fits the part with their armour n hairstyles but they're way too buff for the weedy malnourished raiders. Might use one or two for a leader or just the token tough guy. and yea i just cbf changing the helmets - too fiddly and i think they ok as is. I also like sm helmets more than pig iron helmets. thanks for the feedback and suggestions Automatically Appended Next Post: iv put together two more, one with a laser rifle and another with a flamer the laser rifle is made from a plasme rifle with the front chopped off. i had an alternative idea for the rifle which was made from a tau pulse rifle and a bolter. This other version looked much more like laser rifle but it was just too hard to use with the marines. wow i probably shouldn't zoom in that much, my modeling detail is kinda dodgy the flamer took me freaking ages to finish but i like the end product. Thanks everyone for the compliments and ideas i will post next when i put together the last 3 brotherhood, im gonna do one with a minigun.
