Hmm, good ones with 'gods and battles'.
Ahh, here's one that's fairly well known.
Try "The Iliad" and "the Odyssey", two well known epic sagas by the poet Homer.
They detail a pretty important period in the Mediterranean, when (through the actions of the Gods, and some silly mortals) King Agamemnon united the Greeks to go sail in a huge fleet to kick some Trojan butt. This is, of course, where the Trojan Horse comes from, (and, from that, a well known brand of contraceptives). It's hard to go wrong.
Also, as silly as it sounds, try finding yourself a 'children's book of Greek Mythology'. Something of the sort, especially if it's large and yellow, will give you a wealth of knowledge on the subject.
Good luck.

I wonder if part of the point of the assignment was to learn how to find this stuff. NAW, couldn't have been.
You could always go off the grid and look at Chinese, Native American, or Aboriginal sacred stories.

If you're looking for something no one else is doing, maybe check out Perseus or Bellerophon. Those guys don't get enough credit these days. Beowulf and Siegfried are both interesting, if you don't mind straying a bit into their regions.
Other favorites include Anansi (West African) and Coyote (Native American), though as trickster gods their tales are less stacked with war stories.

look up Queen Boudica, the leader of the Celts. She fought the Romans. She lost, but then again, that was when the Roman Legions were at their peak. Whatever you do, stay away from all that King Arthur crap, it's become to muddled by Hollywood.

Is a reasonably good starting point for Irish mythology.
Also handy:

Follow some links, there's a wealth of information. Just a warning, Wiki is good for general knowledge, you should use it to look at what to look at and then get your real sources from proper books and so on.
Good luck, sounds like a fun project.
A similar search for Welsh or Saxon myths would work too, btw.

+1 for Bulfinch's Mythology! It is truly the one stop shop for myths and legends.
If you're after Irish legends, try 'Irish Fairy and Folk Tales' by W.B. Yeats. He recorded the tales as he heard them while touring the Irish countryside. You won't find many 'gods', but you will find a host of the Gentry and other supernatural beings.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |
