Outstanding tutorial. I'll definitely be putting this to good use on my next project.

Great description of sponging. This effect works well on vehicles, too.

The Sponging is really great idea! I look forward of stealing this idea to my models!

Thanks for the tutorial CMDante, especially your replies to the question as that helped clear up a few things I'd always wondered about sponging. Will look to try this on some of my models sometime soon.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman

Thanks so much for putting together that tutorial with your method. I am definately going to be trying this one out.

In the comments, you mentioned using the corner of the sponge. Do you recommend tearing up the sponge a little to get a ragged, random pattern or is that not necessary?

Thanks for the feedback and kind words guys, glad you like the tutorial as I plan many more in 2010!

Thanks, yeah it works very well on vehicles too. The liquid mask is also a lot easier to use on vehicles due to the larger surface areas.

Glad you like it, it's a really easy technique that gives a great result. Be sure to post your results!

Cheers mate. Yeah, making it a bit more ragged will add to the randomness of the effect. It's a good idea too if you are doing a few different models to get a less uniform look to the scratches.

an oustanding tutorial indeed! I have wondered how this technique has been used to such effectiveness, and the sponge totally makes sense. I have a few spare tactical marines laying around that i'm going to practice on.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

My armyies are darker color.
One is are all black.
If I do the chipping, perhaps I should do chip with silver?

A good tutorial, certainly easier to understand (and easier method) than many I have read on the subject - great stuff

Do you have any problems with paint drying on the sponge and making it unuseable? I have over a hundred orks I think that I want to do this on.. Also, would you use the black for boltgun metal armor? By the way, great tutorial man..

Personally, I never paint anything pure black anymore. You can't shade black, therefore I choose to go with a dark grey, shaded to black and highlighted with lighter greys and whites. This also allows you to work some colour tones in should you wish to add more depth or hues for some more interest. This would also allow you to perform the effect pretty much as I have in the tutorial.

To answer your question directly though, you could chip the black directly with silver, though you might struggle to add the highlighting and shading around the chips that give them their depth and therefore realistic appearance.

I have a stack of blister foam I have stored up so it isn't an issue for me. At a time you are only ever really using a small piece of foam anyway so even one sheet of foam from a GW blister would last about 100 figs of so.

As above, I think you would use boltgun initially, then highlight in some mithril and try and add highlighting around the bottom edge of the chip (from the light source) with some thinned light grey. Best to experiment on a test piece first to get the effect you are looking for nailed first before doing it en masse.

Cheers,

Dante
