Why does it seem like so many Fantasy tournaments or just gamers in general want comp scores for their events and frown on using special characters?

You barely ever see this in 40k and it basically forces people to use what the TO's or other gamers want them to use. (i.e. no creativity)

The only army I see this apply to is daemons.

You see, Fantasy is in a lull right now, due to Chaos Daemons being the best damn codex in the game, due to the relative undercosting of the entire army amongst many things. Hence why it is frowned upon to take their special characters, as they are already OP from the start.

However, I see many people take Special Characters to tournies.

Karl Franz on Dragon, Morathi, Arch Lector Volkmar, Grimgor Ironhide, Teclis, Kairos Fateweaver, Archaon etc. all have their places in competitive lists.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I don't know...In 40k you'll see people being docked for taking special characters, or having special characters banned as well.

Not all the DoC special characters are nasty...I'd rather have a regular Bloodthirster tooled up than the the special character one.

I think the penalizing special characters come from the mindset back from where special characters were opponent's consent only so there were defacto not tournament legal and you never saw them played.

Personally, I would rather not see special characters on the field...But that is just my opinion. There is a local Empire player that I like to give a hard time that he's playing a Vampire Counts army because he keeps on bringing Kurt Helborg back from the dead

The main reason for people's aversion to special characters in Fantasy is due to tradition and comfort. In the past most tournaments banned special characters and only recently did they start putting them in as part of the list. Also in Fantasy characters have more of a role that they do in 40k. this leads many to believe that special characters should not be taken. I personally don't mind special characters and I feel they add a lot to the game though some feel that they unbalance the game.
