Hey guys,

I'm trying to paint a Commissar that I've been converting and I've run straight into a wall; I cannot for the life of me paint the Black leather in a decent way... I've tried mixing my chaos black with my codex grey to make a lighter black colour for the coat, leaving recesses black, and then shading highlights in the codex grey... but it just... looks... awful.

Could someone write me a brief guide on how to do this properly? I'd like to achieve shading that at least looks similar to this:

well they way they have their is with a shadow grey or any dark blue grey really, but if you want to go with a sheen use a glossy finish that is paint on.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Shadow Grey and Black for highlights, and if you go to bright wash it with black ink.

Another option is to use a really dark blue just for highlights (I'm assuming you primed it with
black), highlight that with a dark blue that's almost purple, and wash THAT down with black ink.

You could try a very light drybrush of Codex Grey on the edges of the leather. I've done this before and it comes up alright.

Black Ink really is a genius idea!

I wish I'd thought of it...

After reading the first reply I decided Codex Grey must simply be too light... I mixed it with Chaos black and dry-brushed it very carefully... it's come out alright but unfortunately I am using a Cadian officer's body so there isn't exactly too much higlighting to do, the model is a bit boring to look at...

Maybe I'll tinker with it later but at least it's looking ACCEPTABLE now, thanks a lot for your help guys
