Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

So I am building a WoC army and I have looked at a number of things. And I think I will use The Troll King Throgg, mostly because I want to use Trolls but they need a character since they are only leadership 4. Thing is, is Thogg too cheesy? Besides Trolls become Core all Warhounds get Ld8 and other Troll units do as well. It is just seems a little cheap to me.

I also thought about keeping a unit of trolls near the General as a sort of reserve/ flank moving on the side in a v-pattern but I would rather use blocks of troops.

I'm actually surprised how little I see Throgg used, as you get quite a lot for a decent points value and a hero slot. He only seems to be run in Throgg-led themed armies or Kholek/Throgg monster mash deals ...

So IMO go for it, he should make a troll unit into a substantial threat, and the monstrous mutation rule just seems way too cool to so rarely see the table. Relying on a SC is of course never good, but it sounds like you already have an alternative way to keep fielding trolls if Throgg has to step out for a tourny or something: keep the trolls near your general, or use Throgg's points to buy an exalted or sorcerer (on horse) to keep them company.

The only stipulation to my endorsement: make sure your conversion is awesome

Throgg is AMAZING. The problem is how amazing fighting WOC heroes are. He's certainly worth his points, the reason you rarely see him used is how fantastic the Exalted heroes are.

I say go for it anyway, he'll get her done. He doesn't really need the Troll unit, and they don't really need him as long as they hang near the general, but both are good units, why not go with em?

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Throgg's pretty good. With him and Valkia you can have 3 Bsb's running around and re-rolls on the EotG table.

I love Throgg's theme and I don't think he's overpowered at all. If your local scene is okay with special characters I say go for it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but being a monstrous character isn't Throgg unable to join a unit?

That's what makes him risky, IMO.

Plus his rules are vague. He says units within 12" can re-roll break tests, but then he says every monster unit can use his leadership as if he was the general - does that ALSO mean that only units within 12" can use his leadership, or does that affect the whole board?

Throggy isn't a monster, but a US3 infantry model. I've always seen him run with friends, anyway ...

The re-roll break is pretty clear, but you know you may be right on his Ld bubble only being 12" as well. Up until now I assumed his Ld was passed on simply by being on the table with those hounds, trolls, etc, though I can't find that really supported by the rules. It's the "if they are within 12' of him" that they follow the Ld rule with that makes me wonder what they mean. And this isn't in the FAQ either

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

"may use his leadership as if he were the army General," sounds like 12" to me.

I am glad of that, that is pretty much why I thought he was OP I had visions of all those Ld8 Chaos Warhounds running around.

At least you can take Trolls and they don't have to be babysat so much.

Throgg really shines when he ends up getting in a challenge - do his vomit attack, D6 hits at Str 5 or whatever at no AS - ends up being pretty nasty. Of course, most folks run him in a unit of 3 trolls or whatever, which don't stand up that great to magic/flaming shooting attacks.

He's a good hero choice though - I wish they had come out with a decent model for him.

A GW redshirt and friend ran a Throgg army (all monsters) at a tournament last year (2500pts) and really struggled due to the poor leaderhip and failed stupidity. The sheer unreliability of the units, and having to run bunched groups of units to stay in the Ld bubble of throgg and the general really made it hard to play.

When it worked it was brlliant, but that was in only 1 game, the rest were very close or strong losses.

I run a Throgg army and it is both fun to play and strong if you remember their limitations.

Perhaps it is more cheesy than you like, but I run him and then either a Chaos Lord on a mount or a sorcerer Lord on a disc. This helps makes sure you can fan out as Throgg goes in the center to hold the trolls while the general takes a flank. With two 12" leadership bubbles, it's easy to keep the stupidity manageable. (Although you can always expect a few moments of stupidity, LD 8 or 9 isn't perfect) This is why other non-stupid units are pretty key, Trolls can be really good anvils, but you need hammers you can rely on to make it to combat and not pick their noses instead of making a vital charge.

The army makes most shooting ineffective, save for anything flaming, resilient to cavalry (if they don't pop them all, vomit attacks make knights cry), and mutant regen can lead to lots of fun. (Nothing like +4 ward stubborn trolls.)

Heavy magic armies, dwarfs with a lot of flaming bolt throwers, or lots of static rez can really give the army trouble though.

Never attribute to malice which can rightly be explained by stupidity.
