It is quite simple. GW dosn't support them in over 10 years, no updated codex, no new mini's, nothing. There is hardly any fluff for them at all, ugly models. Why start them up unles you know really know thier stuff. All I know is they are like Pirate Eldar mercenaries. I don't think that's quite correct but then agian, I can't find much stuff on them. All I did was read a good mini story on them and that's it.

Will they be released in October? From what some people say who are quite reliable, they are still a long ways off. Is this GW to confuse us? I don't know, but then again, why do you want to confuse your customers and make them look foolish? I doubt DE will be released in 2010. March 2011? Hmmm maybe I don't have a clue just going by what I read in rumours.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Why don't they just kill them off in the fluff?
Better yet just make a elder pirate codex (containing good and dark elder)?

i believe that the DE are still around because people buy them still. People still play them. Im starting them soon. Why? because i play armies that most dont play. where i live there is no nid player ( other than me ) and im also going to be the only DE player. if i get enough money, and am decent with both of those i might just pick up TAU.

Why i play like this idk but i just choose those that noone plays and make them good.

If the codex comes out then that means that those out there who play DE are proving that they shouldnt be killed off.

Again just my opinion.

You can start holding your breath when GW pulls the codex while keeping the models listed. That's how they've telegraphed everything else so far.

The Dark Eldar in Soulstorm are really well-done, IMO, both in appearance and style. Asdrubael Vect in particular was really cool, even if his Dais of Destruction's 'Dark Scythe' ability was utterly ridiculous.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Dark eldar arent popular because they are a poop army.

They were first class when they came out and nobody liked them. The fluff is boring and unoriginal. The models suck, and the play style is craftworld eldar for beginners.

If they dont go the way of the squats, at least 10 more years for a new dex. We have good pure marines, and then evil angry marines+spikes. That part of the fluff is done right, marines almost universally kick ass. Then we have whiny super discipline perfectionist space elves, who are meh fluff wise. The whole childish angsty space elves+spikes thing wasnt done well.

You've never actually played against DE have you... be honest.

If you had you would realize they they are one of the hardest armies to play, and far outshine normal eldar, which at the moment only has one list (Mech).

And as for fluff, try to defend your amy? OH NOES! here come hungry aliens...

You have to admit though Clthomps that Dark Eldar's continued use in 40K as an army worth playing (unlike, say, Necrons in 5th) is more of a happy accident than by design. It's naught but a fluke that DE have remained competitive through three editions.

Sure I have. Eldar are decently tough tanks with highly specialized troops but an elite army. Dark eldar are cheap but super weak tanks with super weak but generalist troops. Its spam version of craftworld, and without the aspects.

They do have bad models, but that's really all they have going against them. They are still a very semi-competitive army. If GW comes out with them like they were in Dawn of War (the pc game), then they will be well sold. And, on top of that, GW has announced that they are working on concept art for DE.

Yes, DE is somewhere on the horizon, the question is when.

One thing to keep in mind, the people that complain all the time about Dark Eldar are the same annoying idiots who complain that the rules aren't IRON HARD. Come on, people, once they get cool new fluff, a re-done model line, and new rules, they will be a pretty cool army. At least, in my book.

As soon as they get redone people will be calling 'cheese!' so I don't think squabbling about how they fit into the metagame is going to do much. I've actually had some success running to units that everyone calls rubbish, because they are unexpected and people aren't sure how to deal with them (often in a 'oh, everyone says they're rubbish, I can ignore... wtf did they just do to my terminators!' sort of fashion) and because anyone who learns the quirks of their army is going to do better than someone who just takes a mathhammer net list and tosses down the models on the table.

Of course, that all changes if you come up against a hardcore tournament player who knows exactly what the army does. The same could be said for most armies, though.

When you say BAD MODELS, do you mean the way they look when finished being put together?

And what is IRON HARD? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question. Ive only been part of Dakka for about a week. And only have 10 matches under my belt.

I mean you just gotta know how to use them and what to do when things turn out bad. Its the player, not the pieces. So just because DE isnt "supported" by GW it doesnt mean they suck by any means.

Until I am physically in a store that sells GW stuff, and walk up to the rack, and physically pick up a new codex and/or some new models, and walk them to the counter, and pay for them, and walk out of the store with and into my car, and drive home, and go to my 40k work area, and pull out the boxes and get a box cutter to open them up I won't hold my breath either.

Out of curiosity which unit was this? Clearly not Mandrakes and I'd be impressed if it was Hellions somehow. Scourges maybe?

They are a fairly good army on the table top. Id say competitive wise they have the best codex written just because its stayed effective for so long. Sure there are only a few builds, but thats all you see with any other outdated dex ever.

same annoying idiots who complain that the rules aren't IRON HARD.

Are you kidding me. The new dexs have terrible rules issues. Look at Gwar!s excellent space wolf FAQ, hell look at GWs faq.

The DE is a really cool army, guerrilla force...whatever...story wise.

But GW really just didn't do so well in giving them a good guerrilla fighting feel and yet user friendly play style. Most people just couldn't get the hang of their play style...One of those "required taste" armies. You have to want a challenge to want to play with them.

On another note...I think it is amazing that the side stories of 40k I have found to be some of the more interesting then the main stories...i.e.; Kroot, Vespid, Dark Eldar, Harlequin Eldar, Exodite Eldar, Hrud...etc.

Out of curiosity which unit was this? Clearly not Mandrakes and I'd be impressed if it was Hellions somehow. Scourges maybe?

Scourges with splinter cannons, mostly. Tried them with dark lances (still modelling them, so scourges got proxied by some assault marines while testing in a few friendly matches) but with my abyssimal luck with the things they were rather underwhelming. Also tried some hellions, which I'll admit I'm doing mostly for the conversion possibilities and fluff reasons (I'm a modeller and writer over a tournament player) and with a haemonculi in there I was surprised how they did. Need to get around to getting some incubi and a ravanger, the first I've only just gotten to a large enough army for them to start being cost effective (and two doesn't cut it for a retinue so need some more) and the second because I haven't had the spare funds and I'm making myself finish painting my raiders first.

Yes, I am very well aware that my current list is considered a 'bad' one by any standard. But I'm having fun with it, which I feel is the most important thing.

HBMC hit the nail on the head. I remember first reading a bit of fluff in the 2nd ed Ultramarine codex and was hoping to see a fully realized DE army. 3rd came out and I saw the absolutely horrible looking models for nearly the entire range.

In summary: bad models = lack of interest.

However, if rumors are true and Jes Goodwin oversaw and sculpted the new line of minis, I'll be buying a DE army.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
