I agreed with most of the article, it's almost exactly how I run my own Crisis Suits. The only thing I would say is that I've found Iridium Armor to be dead useful on a Commander model. As much as it costs, it does make him really hard to kill in most games. I typically run my Shas'o with the 2+ save, 4+ invul, and FNP along with 2 ablative wound Shield Drones. I love the fact that the drones share his saves, so that's a T4 2+/4+ save model for 15 points.

I've been doing the same set up, with a fireknife loadout. The amazing ammount of fire power this guy can take is sick. Taken rounds from a Punisher, dakkafex, dakkatyrant ect, and kept walking. err. jetpacking.

I agreed with most of it, too! Some people analyze crisis suits and recommend against plasma rifle strictly by counting points, etc... but when you need to kill marines (termies!) in a hurry, it fills a VERY valuable hole in the Tau arsenal!

Nice analysis of the individual weapons... now let's see some combinations

I'm working on it. I'm doing this from work (shhh!), and this first part took me about three hours total.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Thanks for putting the time into this. Most of this I've found from trial and error and some of the Advanced Tau Tactica articles. I've finally started going back through and magnetizing my suits.

IMO suit configuration is most important part about playing Tau.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

That's a nice article. Besides being entertaining it is professional and well-written. A good read. There are some old articles in the system written by someone named "Stelek" maybe you should take a look at them they seem outdated to me.

A little more explanation on the Burst Cannon hate would not be amiss. It's an attractive option for newbies such as myself, and while the old-schoolers might get a chuckle out of the jokes made at its expense, there's not much there to actually explain your position.

Depends on the situation. I sometimes like to use Plasma and Burst Cannons, odd I know, but it's worked for me.

I like to run one team with with the Helios loadout and then have another suit team loaded out with Bladestorm.

I would like to mention that my most common opponent is an Imperial Guard player who absolutely loves stormtrooper and veteran squads. He likes having IG troops with a 4+ armor save. I have found a commander battlesuit armed with a Airbursting Fragmentation Projector and Cyclic Ion Blaster to be VERY effective. Fire the AFP first and then the Ion Blaster cleans up anything left over.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Where you least expect it...

The lack of Heatwave, Firestorm and Rain of Blades is insulting. You might want to mathhammer out Deepstrike to see that the chance to hit your target or came within 7 inces, they are very high with Pathfinder fish guidians. This might help someone farliy new to Tau, but i dint realy learn anything.

I disagree on the target lock. it can be very usefull.
run a squad of 3 crisis suits one anti transport the rest anti infantry.

I pop the transport with one and kill the squad inside it with the rest of the squad. this way i reduce the chance of an assault, and now i wont have to use 2 units to kill 2 units. now its 1 for 2 who doesn't like those odds? (your opponent)

They have the Jetpack rule, which (in the main rulebook) grants Relentless.

You cannot split fire from a single squad like this. Splitting fire allows you to shoot at two different targets, but the squad as a whole still has to choose their targets before anyone shoots. Because the transported unit is still in the transport when targets are declared, it is not a valid target.

Close. they are Jetpack, but the Tau codex overrules it on page 27. XV8 suits, last sentence, states that the ability does not extend to heavy weapons and they must be stationary to fire them. So XV8's have a modified relentless rule that only applies to rapid fire weapons. Stealth suits however still have the full relentless rule.

Woops! You are correct. Since the XV8s can't take heavy weapons, I had forgotten about that. Apologies to Nathanb as well.

And I corrected krootox; thank you for pointing that out.

Ah, this is just my opinions. I'm starting to play 6th now, so I'll start updating it in the next few months.

In the meantime, there are many experienced Tau players discussing this sort of thing in the 40k Tactics forum.

Shas'ui with Bonding Knife

Toronto, Canada

The following are some of my favourite loadouts for crisis teams:

The team below is built to kill MEQ/TEQ effectively and in the opening salvo can cripple the squad by taking out a sergeant and any special/heavy weapons (all models have precision shots due to the shas'vre and ATS).

201 3x crisis + 2x shield drone: 1x shas'vre /w 2x fusion blaster, target lock, 2x Shas'ui /w 2x plasma rifle, advanced targeting system

The next squad is a classic fireknife configurations - great multipurpose squad that can adequately handle light vehicles.

205 3x crisis + 2x shield drone: 1x Shas'vre /w 2x fusion blaster, target lock, 2x Shas'ui /w TL plasma rifle, missile pod (fireknife)

With the new farsight enclaves I found that my armies had hardly any firewarriors so I decided to add some much needed anti-horde firepower (to deal with soft targets). The squad is reasonable priced with 16 str 5 ap 5 shots (half TL), 2 flamers, and 2 fusion blasters to pop transports - all BS3.

202 3x crisis + 4x gun drone: 1x Shas'vre /w 2x fusion blaster, target lock, 1x Shas'ui /w flamer, burst cannon drone controller, 1x Shas'ui /w flamer, burst cannon, retro thrusters

Note: 4/5 of my crisis team in my list have the shas'vre with target lock and 2x fusion blasters. I've found that they are fantastic as popping transports or other vehicles in the vicinity. It also helps that as a character, the shas'vre gets precision shots - many times I've been able insta-kill a special/heavy weapon user buried in the enemy ranks.
