I started a small WIP post in the models section for the Lord, but since I ended up getting several other things tonight and started working on those as well, I figure I should start a blog for the Warband. The FLGS is starting up an escalation league for Warmachine, and I figure it's as good a time as any to start out that game as I've wanted to give it a try for awhile now. In case you couldn't tell by my signature, I'm a big Necron fan, and my particular army happens to be followers of the Dragon, so the Cryx are right up my alley. Since the league is giving bonus points for converted figs, I'm going to further Necronize them, spreading my army out to Harvest more worlds than just those that 40k has to offer.

Necron Lord Asphyxious - Gaspy is the coolest looking Warcaster, and very suitable for my goals, so I had to take him. The FLGS doesn't really have any Warcasters on the shelves for sale, but I won $15 in an out of town tournament over the weekend, and they had an Epic Asphyxious on the rack, so I went ahead and picked him up there.

Head swapped for a Necron head, and carved up the chest to put the Necron symbol on his chest, and intestinal wires under his rib cage.

He already had one opened, cupped hand, so I bent the fingers out a bit further and rounded out the inside of the palm, and with one airsoft pellet later, Resurrection Orb, something no Necron Lord can leave home without.

He's got a big spear thing for his Staff of Light, which I removed the shaft from to replace with a pair of green rods, his hand hiding the joint.

He comes with a flight standish base that's all swirly with a bit that rises up from it to attach him to. I don't want to settle for trying to paint something to match the green plastic, so I carved down an old unused Monolith Portal to fit into the base, and melted/twisted a piece of sprue into the flight post. The original comes with souls that rise up and curl around him, and I'm going to get those in there too but they were being a pain to get the plastic to stretch the way I wanted it to so I put it down for awhile to avoid stressing out.

The green bitz aren't glued in yet, just dry fits, thus his odd angle on the base and lack of spear tips. I'm going to get everything primed before I attached those so they don't get covered in paint.

Skarlock Thrall - Normally a little skeleton thing on the floaty dress, so a simple swap of his upper half for a Necron Warrior's upper half was the obvious thing to do. When his plastic is all hardened and set from the plastic glue, I'm going to put the original Skarlock hands on him, because they've got real cool detail, and I don't have any good Necron hands to give him anyways. One is holding another soul, and I'm replacing the long trailer from it with more stretched green plastic. My goal is for every fig in the army to have the green plastic on it somewhere.

Night Wrench Bonejacks - With the aforementioned FLGS' lack of Warmachine selections, they only Bonejacks they have were a couple packs of Deathrippers, melee jacks, and I wanted the ranged Night Wrenches for my Warband. It works out ok anyways, as the only difference between them is the head, and I don't like the Wrench's stubby little beak head. Stuck a nice, impressive looking cannon in their mouth.

Reposed the legs. They're normally quite static in appearance for what are supposed to be the fastest most agile jacks in the game. The left one is posed sprinting, and the right is leaping to the side. Still need to add a smaller second hydrolic rod on top of the first one in each leg. They're going to have to be pinned to their bases now, as they otherwise have almost non-existent contact area.

I cut off and drilled out holes in place of the three little smoke stacks on their back, and will replace them with green rods after they get primed. Probably end up taller stacks than the original ones. Also debating on taking off the small spikes on their backs to put in the Necron symbol there.

Necron Lord Asphyxious is nearly done. He's glued to the base, but the rod and orb are not glued in yet as I left my white glue at the FLGS when I was flocking some hills for the store terrain. Once I've gotten the staff fully glued in place and together I'll get to two ends of it painted and then he'll be finished.

Skarlock is painted, but I noticed a notch on the back for lining up parts to assemble as I was doing his last drybrush on the robe, and realized my original assumption of how the fig is meant to go together was wrong. There's an extra flowy bit that's supposed to be part of the long streamer from the soul in his hand. Rather than go back and cut it out, I'm going to put it in and paint is up as part of his robe, which is what I had thought it was when I was painting it. I'm leaving for the FLGS right shortly here so I'm not going to worry about it at the moment but come back to it tonight or tomorrow. Both him and Asphyxious still need their streaming souls made.

Nightwentches have their legs all posed and are attached to their bases. I started to paint the one, and when I was thinking about what color to paint the gun, I had the sudden epiphany of why did I give them steam punky boom guns, when I'm trying to make a Necron themed army. Again something I'm not going to take the time to change right now, but I'm going to go back and take their current guns out and replace them with Gauss Flayers.

Got Asphyxious' staff assembled. I'll get it painted tomorrow. Dropped him at one point and his thumb broke off so I put in a bit of green stuff for a new one, since he needs it to hide the seam of his staff joint.

Picked up the new plastic Helljack kit. It's being assembled as the Slayer variant, but I'm going to make it suitably ornate so as to use it as a Seether when the escalation league's point value increases next month. Reposed the legs to give him a quicker, running/pouncing posture. While the PP plastic can't be plastic glued, and is harder to cut with a hobby knife, it turns out the stuff can bend rather well without breaking, so despite that leg's cut up and green stuffed look, it's actually all still one piece, which should help it's durability as the weight of the whole fig will be resting on it. Carved off the lower part of his head, will sculpt in a new, more Necrony face. Smoothed out the space above his head and will put in a large Necron symbol there. Need to pick up some chains from the craft store when I'm out running errands tomorrow to wrap around his arms.

These are absolutely stunning! I'm really, really impressed. I used flayed ones chopped up with scrap thralls (mix 'n' match) and various necron bits in with my Soulhunters - but, sir, I bow down to you!

cool work, I love the jack though because I feel like it saying rock on for some reason.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

It occurs to me that Tartarus could make a good nightbringer - what other counts as swap mods are you thinking of doing?

Of course he is, the fig is Epic Asphyxious, literally.

I think he looks like he missed the bus and is chasing after it while all the other kids laugh at him.

Indeed I do, though I'm also highly motivated to get stuff done whenever organized play is involved.

inmygravenimage wrote:It occurs to me that Tartarus could make a good nightbringer - what other counts as swap mods are you thinking of doing?

Tartarus is cool, but at the moment I have no plans to add more Warcasters. I knew I wanted Asphyxious simply because of how cool he looks, and am then building the Warband to function with him, while still looking cool.

I've got a Cankerworm on order, and I plan to see what I can do with him to make him Tomb Spyder like, since he is all about the salvaging of dead mechs. That rounds out the first month's 15 point game limit.

Next month we up to 25 and are allowed to start getting units, and I know I have to have a Withershadow Combine, a trio of guys similar in appearance to Asphyxious, and I want to give them Wraith arm and claws.

Bane Thrall and Bane Knights might get taken, they'd just get a simple head swap for Necron heads.

Mechani Thralls are another one I'm looking at. They're little ghouls with small powerfists. I think an easy way to do them would be to just put Flayed Ones down, but I don't think I want to do that, and might try to make a punch of little powerfists for a unit of Necron Warriors. It's a unit I'm not sure I want to do, simply because it would pretty much amount to putting Warhammer figs on Warmachine bases, and not much for actual conversions.

Necron Lord Asphyxious and his little buddy are all finished. I was going to have some trailing souls rising up from Asphyxious' base in a similar fashion to the Skarlock's trailing soul, but I didn't like the way they looked on it so I took them back off. Now to get his minions done.

Only a little bit of progress to report today. I tried several approaches each for the Nightwrench guns and Slayer's face. For the Nightwrenchs, after trying to stick most of a Gauss Flayer into their mouth and not liking the result, I ended up cutting the thing way down, eventually ending up with a short barreled version that was more just reminiscent of the original, looking nice and Necrony without simply tacking the thing on. That job is reserved for the spine on the back of the Slayer.

I've got a bunch of them around, it's a very Necrony bit, and the spot was just the right size. I think I may cut another one down and put it between the front armor plate and the smoke stack, and generally see what I can do about giving it more flow and incorporation into the appearance of the fig. I also dropped it at one point, and the leg broke where it had been all Green Stuffed. I cleaned out the old work, pinned it into place, and redid the GS to smooth the leg back out. I left the pin in a specific visible spot so as to do double duty as the replacement for the leg's hydrolics that were cut out when it was reposed.

I messed around with several different options and methods for giving the head a more Necron skull appearance. I eventually decided it was the angle of the eyes that kept throwing the look off, and ended up just sculpting a whole new face over the existing one. I'll get the mouth put on tomorrow after the chin has had time to set and harden overnight.

Got the head all finished up. I think it looks like a suitable good Necron head. However, I want people's opinion on how it looks on the body and in relation to it for size. I think it might be too big, but that could just be due to the different color of it making it stand out, or the odd head placement on Jacks.

Looks fine to me, although the tusks are a bit out of place.

And just so you know, you spelled 'servants' wrong in the topic title. There's only one e.

Are you making these so that you could use them in 40k and Warmachine? Or will they be solely for WM?

Pretty much just Warmachine, though I think that Asphyxious will get used in both. While he's a bit on the short side, I think he's quite cool enough to be a count-as Nightbringer or Deceiver. Looks like far too much of a bad arse to just be a Lord.

The soul is a length of sprue from the template frame, heated till it gets soft and bendy then shaped to curve how I wanted it to. The base is just a blob of melted sprue.

The Nightwrenches are nearly done. Just need to paint the caps to their smoke stacks and guns gold and then do some touch ups, need to wait for the glue and green stuff holding the rods in place to dry first though.

Redid the spine on the Slayer to be less tacked on and more integrated into it's curves. I need to do some Green Stuff gap filling on it, but I'm going to wait awhile to do that, because I have a bad habit of putting my thumb in previous, still soft Green Stuff work, and I really like how the Necron symbol on the front came out and don't want to screw it up, because I'd have to do it entirely over from scratch.

In the mean time, everything has a bunch of the translucent green, but I'm not sure on good places to put the rods on the Slayer. All I've got at the moment for ideas is to hollow out the smoke stacks and put a bit of green in at the opening, and to drill out the hole in the Necron symbol to put a small gem in there. Other thoughts and ideas?

While not one of my favorite details, the Tusks on the Slayer should probably stay as they are actual equipment that he gets to smack people with.

Nightwrenches are all finished being painted. Slayer'll sit overnight to let the last bit of GS work on him set, then I'll start getting him painted tomorrow, want to have him done before Tuesday so I can use a bit of my supply of static grass at the FLGS to base the three Jacks, and then this first little 15 pt battlegroup will be all done up before Wednesday's Warmachine league night, with the sole except of Cankerworm who I've got on order and will hopefully be able to pick up on Wednesday.

After that, it's looking like I'm going to add in Bane Lord Tartarus and a unit of Bane Knights when the league point value increases next month.
