I play Imperial Guard, as many of you may or may not know.

I have been since the late 1990's. At first, I pretty much just played whatever I had bought and painted. But over time, I started making lists! For the most part, my list hasn't changed much at all until the most recent Imperial Guard Codex.

Here is what I usually ran:

Bare Bones Company Command Squad with Lascannon

Two Platoons (Twins)
Four HW Squads (Autocannons, Heavy Bolters, ML, and Lascannons)

Stormtroopers, fat squad with Plasma and Deepstrike

PCS with Plasma or Flamers
Two Squads with ML and GL, Sergeant with Lasgun.

Hellhound and a single Sentinel

Two Russes (either MBT or Demolisher) and a Basilisk

That was pretty much is for ten years. I painted the same model two or three times, from one color to the next, but the list stayed pretty stadnant. Occasionally I would put in a squad of Vets, another squad of Stormtroopers, this and that (Ogryns a few times). But that was the list I really used for anything serious.

With the newest IG Codex? Well, everything has changed. Valkyries are a major player, Hellhounds my opponent's bane. I've dropped the Sentinel, but I'm so mobile, even with my Troops, that I don't miss it at all for that late punch with a walking Lascannon. Every time I play, I use a different list experimenting with new things. Basically what I'm trying to ask is: What changed how you played the most?

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

They changed star cannon to 2 shots instead of 3.

My last active eldar army had 3 war walker with all star cannon . and 9 vyper all with star cannon.

Then new edition come , 2 shots only + cover saves everywhere ...

Oh god i was so cheesy @_@......

I've only been playing since mid-late 4th edition, and my lists haven't changed all that much. I used to take a really static gunline army with my Dark Angels, but I've since made myself at least a little more mobile. Even so, I'm not so hot on mechanizing, mostly because tanks are hard to store and I don't enjoy painting vehicles all that much. All in all, I've just taken less heavy support and more troops meant to stay on the move.

I've only ever played in 5th Edition, so I can't say that the changeover really affected much. But I have actually really started altering my usual lists with the discovery of better tactics. I used to run a blob of Fire Warriors (Because, well, it's dirt-cheap to run 6 full 12-man squads compared to say, running 6 full 10-man Space Marine squads) and go for a straight-up gunline. Two HQs, 72 Fire Warriors, a handful of Broadsides and a Hammerhead.

Now? I'm building towards running the points-heavy Farsight Bomb. 9 Crisis Suits in the Elite slot, 7 (Plus Farsight) in the HQ slot. Not to mention a single Broadside and Hammerhead, and now experimenting with only running 2 squads of 6 Fire Warriors apiece. Plus, I'm actually running Sniper Drones this time around; they make fantastic units for anti MEQ. (36 inch gun, 36 inch networked marker at BS4, and stealth field? Awesome.)

My Armies:
Kal'reia Sept Tau - Farsight Sympathizers
Da Great Looted Waaagh!
The Court of the Wolf Lords

I've switched my Chaos Space Marines from mech to foot-slogging since second edition, and have had mixed success. My Orks have evolved from infantry to mech, and will probably continue. I'm still undecided when it comes to the Tyranids I'm building. I try every combination of what I've got and generally don't buy new stuff that much. It does seem that fifth edition has become overwhelmingly mech, though.

I wouldn't worry. Dark Eldar haven't changed in 10 years either... oh... wait... I see what you're getting at.

Well, the Chaos codex made me sell my Word Bearers army. It still pains me to see pics of my old army.

My Ulthwe Eldar army surprisingly didn't change all that much. I've added some Harlies and a Fire Prism, but not much else.

Once the Battlewagon kit came out, my Ork army changed drastically. I just really dig the new Ork vehicle models.

Finally building a Space Marine (Wolf) army; something I've not played in over 18 years. With the clarifications in the FAQ, I'm pretty satisfied that I can play a SW army w/o much debate over grey areas in the codex.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Hmmm, I play DE and my list hasn't changed in 10 years...there is something there. However, I did once use Blasters as 'count-as' for Shredders against a horde army. That worked pretty well.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Well, I played Orks in 3rd, skipped 4th, restarted in 5th. Back in 3rd, my army was a massive horde and the rules were insanely conducive to that style with the Mob Up, Check Size, max 4+ save, etc. It was successful, but brainless and boring as hell.

When I restarted, I vowed no horde. While the horde still works (differently, now it's shoota boyz behind a screen mostly commonly), I have shifted to mechanized orks and now slowly building shooty orks with lootas and probably some killa kans with grotzookas when the new kits come out next month. It's really a fresh start. The ork codex is solid, but hardly overpowered (which is par for the course, I guess), so it's been fun.

The eye of terror.

If you're still having fun, that's what counts, right?

I played Chaos for 14 years without buying a new army, and had fun with them the whole time.

I'm still new, to be honest. I only got into WH40k back in September 2009. I'm still tweaking my list, but I know I want to play a drop-pod heavy army, and that's been the foundation for all my decisions.

I think that if the rumors about the Tantalus Lander come to fruition, and if there's some way for vanilla Space Marines to field it, that would be the biggest change to my design philosophy that I could imagine. Depending on the exact rules for them, I can see myself comletley restructuring my list to use them. I just hop you can take a fair amount of them...

I don’t think it’s bad but I like the evolving and changing armies. I think it keeps the game fresh and interesting. Sadly it makes an already expensive hobby more expensive.
