I just bought a 800 pt tau army but i wanted to ally with another army that specialises in close combat so that my army can have awesome ranged weapons and epic close combat skills.
What army do you think i should use?

Forever alone

That's illegal, you know.

Only Inquisition armies can have allies, and they have to be from other Imperium armies.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

But, in 2v2 games it's alright.
Off the top of my head Blood Angels, Black Templar, Orks and Tyranids.

Nearly everything is better at CC that the Tau, but those are the more melee orientated armies.

Of course you can't use them both in one game, unless they had the ally rule like the Inquisiton, but if you have a choice to play on a team with a friend against some other people those are the types of armies you'd want to team up with.

If you want to do it the legal 1v1 way, you want to add Kroot to your army. They'll die easily and I don't really see giving them a save as worth the points for it, but if they manage to outflank or get into a good position using infiltrate they can go pretty well. Unless you're up against one of those armies I mentioned, then it's really hard and I'd go with the shooting.

This is true - but remember that there are better armies out there for melee orientation. Assaulty SW armies are popular, but their units intended for CC have WS/BS 3. Blood Angels are much better, as they have Assault Marines in the troops slot.

Kal'reia Sept Tau - Farsight Sympathizers
Da Great Looted Waaagh!

I may be biased, but my loyalties are to the Orks for CC. A full strength Boyz mob with sluggas/choppas is giving you 120 S4 attacks on the charge. Add a PK Nob in there and they can even try to bust up a tank if they can get in close.

I'm just talkin' about Megaweapon.

Tyranids. They do not have high AP weapons (meaning AP2 and such) but they litterally overwhelm the board. I have fired at one time from a warrior squad, 30 shots and then assaulted and killed EVERYTHING!!!!
