For me the old MKI looks like a block on tracks.... and i think is one of the worst models GW ever produced...
I think i still have two laying around some place as book ends...

The new ones all the way. I like retro models, but the old LR looks like a cheese cutter.

I wouldn't go for either of them. The RT land raider looks...ummm.. Lets say 'cute' and with the FW one you would have to convert the hell out of it to make it look pre heresy.

So what im saying is: none of them are good choices, i would rather go for the GW land raider and convert that.

How about using this pre-heresy style land raider from FW.

I used the second option for my pre heresy land raider. Just make sure to FILE OFF ALL IMPERIAL EAGLES and any other sign of the emperor. There were no eagles on preheresy marines except for the Emperors Children. Its a sick model and looks great when your done building it, just make sure your pieces arent warped if you buy the FW one.

I saw a guy at a tourney who converted a pre-heresy LR by makign the side sponsons out of cardboard and stickign them to a current GW LR. I was surprised how good it looked.

And yet there arent any templates on the internet on how to do so. I have the feeling a lot more people would have pre-heresy land raiders if blokes like your converter went that extra mile for the rest of us hobbyists

I am talking about the Forge World pre-heresy land raider in the poll. If you look at the picture of the forge world land raider that I posted, it is the same as yours.

I guess I should have made it clearer by saying forge world's pre-heresy land raider.

The old LR kit needs a massive amount of superdetailing to look good - I've done a couple myself, including some ork looted conversions - by current kit standards, it was an embarrassingly nasty and primitive sculpt. The one advantage it has is looking nicely different to the new LR shape.

If you have money (and don't hate resin), the FW version is the best solution by far.

Every time someone asks this question I dig out a photo of my old attempt. I basically took a RT raider, chopped the road wheels, extended it, added tiger tracks and built some sponsons.

A little disappointed with the final build quality on reflection, but I think the idea is sound. Worth a thought maybe..

The old land raiders go for quite a bit now on e-bay.

There is something about them that I like so maybe you are on to something, and I might try to contemporize the MK 1 and make it look a bit like the new land raider.

The FW kit looks great, but is a POS. Save your money and convert a PH LR yourself.

i own an IW FW pre-heresy land raider and it has to be oen of my favorite models.

It is also oen of the best value for money FW ktis out there and acutally fits together really well.

i am even considering getting another one for my Preheresy SW army and i was thinking it might be possible to cut the side part off the top of the land raider find some spare land raider tracks and put them alogn the top as well. This would hopefully produce a pre heresy land raider with even closer resemblance to the RT one.

Although i have to say its beautiful mdoel with very littl work so *shrug*

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

I've purchased 6 over the course of a few years and they all suffer the exact same issues.

The engine compartment, assault ramp top door and hull top were all smaller then their plastic counterparts. The result is that with the sides attached to the floor piece, these parts, properly centered, do not reach to either side of the hull.

The differences in our experience could stem from you receiving items from a newer mold. Maybe they ship poor casts to me, but I doubt it because according to the fine gent at FW (via phone line), it's a known issue with no forseeable fix.

It's a great looking kit no doubt, why else would I spend that much on something I know is FAQ'd up. The flip side is that it's a PITA to build.

Anyone who tells you the kit goes together smoothly is:
1) Extremely lucky
2) Forgotten what a PITA it is
3) An expert modeler who doesn't hold FW to the coals for their mistakes because their skills are that good
4) Never built one

The kit LOOKS GREAT!
The resin parts are about 15% smaller than the plastic parts they replace so do not fit the main kit properly.

Also check out: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/jimbo_dh_11.html

He had the same issues I have.

That's what I was thinking.

I like the original OOP Land Raider but I would totally buy the one above. Has that same sort of vibe.

Wow!

I really, really like your version - very nice!

You'd have to change up the guns and such, and maybe a few other details, but you really could sell quite a few of these, if you ever decide to!

(I know I'd buy two, or three, or...)

I know the rogue trader land raider looks like crap, but I still have a fondness for it. I guess in part due to it being about the only marine vehicle i've never owned.

Over there...

I think it would really come down to your choice of models.

If you're using current models for your pre-heresy conversions (assuming that's what you're doing) then I would go for the FW vehicle.

If you're using older models, then the original LR will fit in just fine for a nice Retro look.

I like the model for the MKIIB LR, but the old RT one is just sooo cute!

the old LR, despite being a relatively low detail ungainly best, does look nice when next to other models from that era that have a different styling compared to the current versions. when i fielded my new-ish LR (it's the metal hybrid crusader) with my BA, it didn't seem right to me next to all those old rhino chassis.

the old RT LR (which i've converted to a crusader and redeemer variant instead of the original godhammer) just *feels* right with the older armies.

that being said... i do think it looks a bit out of place with the newer models and the negatives glare more than the positives. since the above army is my first army, i decided 10 years later to do another marine force with the space hulk release of new blood angel figs (i was excited and this was the first release in new BA in almost 10 years...and the rumors of the new codex hadn't started yet!). for them, i went with the FW land raider to better match the detail on the spulk terminators.

finally, there are people that convert the RT land raider to look a bit more modern (like _Si_ 's posted pic) while others go the opposite way and make the FW LR mkII look even more retro. both look sweet!

basically, the correct answer IMO depends on the army you're using it with.
