Bolter Beach is Open for Reservations!

A good friend of mine (Yuri) and I will be rolling out a big GT next June in Sarasota, Florida. We will be running a 40k GT, Fantasy GT and a Flames of War event. Bolter Beach is currently planned to take place during the first weekend in June 2010. This will be an independent Grand Tournament and we are planning to have lots of players attending.

What you can expect:
•Well run tournament with very knowledgeable judges
•Challenging missions that are well thought out and extensively play tested
•Awesome prize support

We are hoping to attract players from outside the state of Florida. This is going to be a big event and we'll put lots of work into it to make sure everyone has the opportunity to have a great time. While we will have challenging missions and encourage competitive play we place the emphasis on great sportsmanship and beautiful armies. I have run two successful back to back 40k GTs in North Carolina the past two years and Yuri has been running big GW events for the past several years now.

Bolter Beach is a three day event in Sarasota, Florida that features the following:

June 4
• Club Royale 40k Team Tournament
Teams will consist of three members each. Each member brings their own 1500 point army. You will play four one-on-one games versus other teams over the course of the day. The team that accumulates the most battle points at the end of the day will we be rewarded with lots of loot!

• Lord of the Rings
We will have up to 10 tables (20 players) open and the top two finishers will earn their spots at Vegas in 2011.

• Blood Bowl
There will be a big Blood Tournament so bring your favorite team and show us what you’ve got.

June 5 & 6
40k GT, 2000 points
There will be up to fifty tables (100 players) open and the top two finishers will earn their spots at Vegas in 2011. All current 40k Codices are legal.

• Fantasy GT, 2250 points
There will be up to fifty tables (100 players) open and the top two finishers will earn their spots at Vegas in 2011.

National Tournament Invitations
The top two overall players from the LoTR, 40k GT and Fantasy GT will receive invites from Games Workshop for the Nationals in 2011 in addition to our other prizes. If one of those players cannot attend, the player with the next highest overall score will receive the invite. If a player has already received an invite from another event, then his invitation will be passed on to the next person as well. The National tournament will be held in Las Vegas in 2011, at the end of the first Indy GT season. The only way to attend this tournament is two earn an invitation by taking one of the top two spots at one of the independently run tournaments.

Rules
We are very strict about the rules and want everyone to have a great time. There are no exceptions to any of the rules listed below:
• All models in your army must be painted and have finished bases. Models that do not make the minimum standards may not be used. Bringing an unpainted army doesn't just mean a zero in painting. It also means you don't play.
• All models must be WYSIWYG, or pretty darn close to it. A clever conversion that skirts the line, but draws applause from your opponent is cool. "My red bolt pistol is a plasma pistol" is not.
• Part of WYSIWYG is using the correct models: "I'm using Bloodletters on big rocks for my Blood Crushers because I don't want to shell out the cash." isn't acceptable. "I hand sculpted all my models" is probably is fine, assuming some minimum sculpting skill and they look like what they should represent. If you have a question email with pictures.
• It's a GW sponsored tournament. A preponderance of your army should be GW models, or converted using GW bitz.
• Base size: Models should be on the proper size base, compared to newer models of the same type. All terminators should be on 40mm, all blood Crushers should be on 60mm round, etc.

Max Total Points (over 5 games) = 1000
*550 total battlepoints
*450 total soft points (150/appearance, 150/sportsmanship, 150/comp)

We will use weighting factors to normalize the your total points; e.g., your total battlepoints will be multipled by a factor of 0.9167.

Max Total Battlepoints/Mission = 120 (x 0.9167)
*Objectives: 100 Points
*Bonus: 20 Points

Objectives
*Primary: 50
*Secondary: 30
*Tertiary: 20

Bonus Points
*4 bonus/mission
*5 points/bonus

Max Total Soft Points/Mission = 80
*Soft Point Split
- Comp = 40 (x 0.75)
- Sport = 40 (x 0.75)

Comp Breakdown
*Did your opponent have two or more identical units that are Heavy Support, Elite, HQ, or Fast Attack?
- Yes = 0 pts
- No = 5 pts

*Did your opponent have three or more troops?
- Yes = 5 pts
- No = 0 pts

*How would you judge his/her theme?
- 0 (Win At All Costs)
- 5 (Lots of nasty combos)
- 10 (fair army)
- 15 (This army represents its background very well)

Sports Breakdown
*Did your opponent argue about rules, roll dice too fast, have disputes about terrain, slow play, not move or measure properly?
- Yes = 0 pts
- No = 5 pts

How would you rate your opponent?
- 0 (Would not play them again)
- 5 (Lots of rules arguments)
- 10 (Fair)
- 15 (This was my favorite game ever)

Appearance
* You will be judged by the TOs and score up to 250 points based upon the appearance of your army. A complete set of rules for the painting scores will appear later.
* There is a Player's Choice Award. You will vote for your favorite army during the GT.

Good luck GBF. Seems overly complicated but a major event run for the community is a win in my book. Props for going out there and doing it.

It's 40 times 0.75. Comp is 15% of your total score (30).

I'm still confused-- why do the scores need to be plugged into an equation?

It seems like Battle Points + Comp + Sports + Paint = Total should be sufficient.

Also:

450 total soft points (150/appearance, 150/sportsmanship, 150/comp)

and

Appearance
* You will be judged by the TOs and score up to 250 points based upon the appearance of your army.

Umm... ?

I'd really like to see this be a successful event-- the Southeast needs to step up its 40k game.

Edit for tone.

I forgot to correct the overall score for paint, it is 15% of total score -> 150 points out of 1000.

To recap:

battlepoints - 55%, 550 points max
comp - 15%, 150 points max
appearance - same
sportsmanship - same

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Could you elaborate on the two identical unit portion?

If I have two battlewagons in my heavy support slots, if I give them different wargear, does this pass the yes/no test?

If I have two units of Lootas for elites, if one unit has 15 models, and one unit has 14 models, does that pass? If one unit has 15 Lootas and the other has 5 Lootas...does that pass muster?

If battlewagons have different upgrades they are not identical. Same for squad size.

Cool, thanks for the answer.

Huge portion of points in soft scores. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it seems unusual.

I think Broad Side Bash may have had more points in the soft score as opposed to battle.

And that was by far the biggest issue with the tournament as a whole. Battle points should be at least 60% as far as most of the guys I've talked to at the major tournaments in the last 2 years.

The Necro used a comp system which was scored with no rules made public and your first three pairings were based on comp. Northwest Conquest had soft scores and so will MSVD.

guys this is its own tournament, its not following the guidelines of some other tournament, if you want to play only in tournaments that follow X guidelines and play against the same armies over and over again, then do it.

GBF is creating a tournament that will promote a different playstyle and should lead to armies that "break" the mold being there. It sounds like you can still beat your opponents face in the dirt in this tournament, you just can't do it with unpainted models and redundant elite/heavy/fast slots.

I'm still trying to make sure that i won't have a scheduling issue, barring that I plan to come!

Just need to figure out which army to bring. ><

The comp scoring is easy to work with being Orks, not so easy to work with being Dark Eldar. There's exactly 1 viable elite choice, 1 viable heavy support choice, 1 viable fast attack choice....and making a 2k list without repeating yourself might not be possible.

*ponders* If two wych squads equipped the same have different wych powers, does that meet the rule? Or is it wargear/unit size only?

Question about Comp for ya GBF:

If I have a vehicle squadron consisting of two (fill in the blank here) and only one squadron, that does not trip the duplicate comp rule correct? It's per UNIT and not per MODEL right?

I have reformatted the scoring system and corrected a couple of errors.

Max Total Points (over 5 games) = 1000

*550 total battlepoints
*450 total soft points (150/appearance, 150/sportsmanship, 150/comp)

Battlepoints = 55%
Appearance = 15%
Sportsmanship = 15%
Comp = 15%

Max Total Battlepoints/Mission = 120 (11% total)
*Objectives: 100 Points (9.1667%/game, 45.833% total)
*Bonus: 20 Points (1.833%/game, 9.167% total)

Objectives
*Primary: 50 (4.5834%/game, 22.917% total)
*Secondary: 30 (2.75%/game, 13.75% total)
*Tertiary: 20 (1.833%/game, 9.167% total))

Bonus Points
*4 bonuses/mission
*5 points/bonus (0.366%/game, 1.833% total)

Max Total Soft Points/Mission = 60 (6% total)
*Soft Point Split
- Comp = 30 points/mission
- Sport = 30 points/mission

Comp Breakdown
*Did your opponent have two or more identical units that are Heavy Support, Elite, HQ, or Fast Attack?
- Yes = 0 pts
- No = 5 pts (6 points total, 3% total)

*Did your opponent have three or more troops?
- Yes = 5 pts (6 points total, 3% total)
- No = 0 pts

*How would you judge his/her theme?
- 0 (Win At All Costs)
- 5 (Lots of nasty combos)
- 10 (fair army)
- 15 (This army represents its background very well) (18 points total, 9% total)

Sports Breakdown
*Did your opponent argue about rules, roll dice too fast, have disputes about terrain, slow play, not move or measure properly?
- Yes = 0 pts
- No = 5 pts

How would you rate your opponent?
- 0 (Would not play them again)
- 5 (Lots of rules arguments) (50 points total)
- 10 (Fair) (100 points total)
- 15 (This was my favorite game ever) (150 points total)

Appearance
* You will be judged by the TOs and score up to 150 points based upon the appearance of your army. A complete set of rules for the painting scores will appear later.
* There is a Player's Choice Award. You will vote for your favorite army during the GT. These votes do not count towards your overall score.

Great and powerful one running an event I will be attending:

Wych powers are selected randomly at the beginning of each game. If I have two squads of wyches, I roll a D6 for each of them. These powers also apply to HQ choices, reaver jetbikes (the only fast attack choice)

1: 12" assault move
2: +1 WS
3: +1 STR
4: Always Strike First
5: Re-roll any misses in close combat
6: +1 Attack

*EDIT* If I can influence your judgement at all, I would respectfully hope that battlepoints would be more important. I slave hours away into painting, but I'm not that good at it. ><

*EDIT #2* I like the system where comp is judged once per tournament. Why would each game need an answer to "Did your opponent have two or more identical units that are....etc?" Everyone is playing the same list every game. Caveat: I've never been to a GT, and know nothing about them. The one Mike Clark is running seems to make sense though where your comp score is judged before the tournament starts by a panel of judges, not by your opponents every round to make it fair, and those comp scores are used to pair rounds 1 and maybe round 2.

Two of the same unit with marginally different upgrades or numbers are still functionally basically identical. If 14 Lootas and 15 Lootas don’t count as duplicates, then everyone who bothers to read the comp scoring guidelines is going to get a max score, with minimal if any tweaks to their usual power list.

Remember folks, the total number of points in a given category is nearly irrelevant. What matters is how large the functional spread is. If everyone at the event scores max for comp, then comp is not a factor in determining who wins.

But, really. What list does this prevent?

I understand people want comp scores to prevent "WAAC" lists, but an easily skirted rule like this one just seems arbitrary.

Is a unit of Assault Terminators with 5 TH/SS "identical" to a unit with 4TH and 1LC?

Please, tell me. What lists is this comp scoring designed to punish?
