I had painted them up some time ago, but didn't quite like how I had based them.

But now that I've based them up using the Baccus Basing System, I think they're finally somewhat presentable!

Without further ado, I hereby present my 6mm Spartan hoplites!
(Beautifully sculpted by Baccus Miniatures)

Nice, I like 6mm it really gives the right feel for large set piece battles.

Very nice.

I do like 6mm and have a large Napoleonic Baccus army myself.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Wow, these guys are tiny! They look more like regular spartans than hoplites, though, right? I thought hoplites were the assistants to regular spartan warriors, and carried a range of weaponry (like javelins, etc) and not the large spartan shields or helms/armor.

At least, that's what I got from reading Gates of Fire a while back

Thanks for the kind encouragement!

@RiTides: Hmm I've read Gates of Fire too (quite a number of years ago), but I don't recall hoplites being described as such. Maybe you've mistaken the term for another one? (such as "psiloi")

The word "hoplite" (actually "hoplites" in Greek) is derived from the Greek word "hoplon", which means shield. So the term hoplite is basically used to mean armored infantry, characterized by their heavy bronze shield.

That was "helots" who were the slaves.

Later on (decades later) a new type of fighter called a peltast was introduced. He had light or no armour, a shield, a spear and javelins. Functioned as light or light/medium infantry.

Those are very nice. You should upload them in the Dakka Gallery, and also cross-post them in Painting and Modeling so they get some more exposure. It's always nice to get more historical stuff on here.

I'm more and more becoming a fan of Baccus' 6mm stuff. I got a few random stands of their Napoleonic stuff (a couple strips of British infantry and a couple strips of Prussian cavalry) from a FLGS, and I'm seriously considering picking up one of the army sets at some point, maybe Bavarians or Austrians. It would be a great way to start Napoleonics and they're pretty cheap to boot. And we already have an example here of how nice their ancients look when they're painted up.

Ah, yes- helots. They were cool because they had whatever weaponry was handy to back up the spartans... I think one of the main character's helots used a bunch of small wooden shafts that he sharpened as throwing javelins.

Thanks for jogging my memory there KK
