Another big tournament just passed this weekend (the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre at Showcase Comics), and there's the usual talk about slowness, no posted results, etc. It seems to me that many of these problems could be easily solved by a specialized piece of software to handle rankings, pairings and results. Is there anything like this available? It just seems like doing it by hand would be a huge pain in the butt.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Maybe I am being obtuse but what's wrong with Excel or something similar open source? All you would need to do is to set up and format the sheet in advance with all the relevant formulae and then enter info on the day as and when results come in

Overlord is the one I most commonly see used, but it takes some practice and can be a bit finicky.

We had a 17 year old using Overlord at our (small) club fantasy tourney last year - after about an hour's practice.

Excel can take longer to learn how to do things (I was not shown how to use it at school in any way shape or form - unlike today's generation)

It is flexible in its rankings from round to round. You can have it draw the round based on results, and taking into account tables used (so that you don't get winners or losers playing on the same table time after time).

It used to be a free download, but the creator sold it to Rankings HQ (who look after some International game rankings for various countries apart form Australia) and is being reworked as "tournament overlord".

It underwent a final 'live' trial at a 'major UK Fantasy event' last weekend and should become available again shortly.

I guess this is just me but I'd think excel would do the job just fine. I've yet to play in a tournament where players were seeded on anything besides battlepoints or comp (for the 1st round or 2).

Using a sort button after the scores are entered should take only a minute or two after checking to make sure the players didn't have the same table assignments against other players earlier in the tournament.

Avoiding
a) pairing up people who played each other earlier
b) table repetition
c) making club mates play, at least in the first round or two

Can be tricky and time consuming. Speaking from experience.

C) can be hard, especially if seeding is done by tourney rankings (first round) as good players tend to congregate in the same clubs here. It's really only possible in our two larger tourneys (CanCon and ArcanaCon) even then, with the large number of club entries to both, not an entirely avoidable issue.

Generally, we try to avoid first round matchups with clubmates - but after that it's based on their battle points. If they have to play a clubmate because they both ended up with the same result in their last game, or their scores are now tied because of previous game results, that's how it works.
