I've decided I want to get off my lazy ass and make a display board for my tournament armies, rather than just use a lunch tray.

Teach me!

Battlefoam will be releasing their collapsible display board, but you can always construct something simply from MDF board or press board.

I tend to use left over Demo Table boards from my shop as display boards made from press board just sanded and flocked to match my army with a little terrain element or two based on MDF board for modularity. There should be a picture of said board in my gallery.

A friend of mine Behind th Mask went to the great extend of using press board, mounting it in a picture frame, and drilling out specific holes for each unit and vehicle which were then magnetized.

Not cheap, but really easy to do. They have enough definition that you can easily drybrush in an afternoon. Just add some Handles from home depot for a few dollars and you get a display with minimal time and effort that will fit pretty much any army.

Battlefoam is also coming out with a board that looks solid (price range is about the same). It's notably smaller though (24x18") so depending on your army it might not be big enough.

Otherwise, yeah, some MDF board and various basing materials is a good way to kill a weekend and the cheapest of the options, but the most intensive time-wise.

All valid approaches.

Several members of my gaming group have built display boards. You can check out how we made them over at our blog. Here is a link to all the display board posts we have - http://www.thehogsofwar.com/search/label/display%20board

The basic idea is to use a piece of foam and flock it. You can get as crazy as you want from there. I put a piece of hardboard under mine for stability and a few other members actually used some cheap picture frames from Hobby Lobby for theirs.

Have a trawl through the Dakka articles library. I suspect there are a couple of tutorials lurking in there.

if you want to make ur own than i recommend going to home depot and getting sum pink insulation foam....like an 8 foot x4foot piece is 16 bucks(can easily make 3 display boards)

a good foam cutter is about 20 bucks

basiacally just plan out ur display. layer up the foam and glue it together...than cut.

remeber that you can spray paint foam...i use an airbrush

check it out took about 30 minutes to lay it all out and an hour to paint....its levels were designed for the SMs but i use it for my CSM cuz im layz

I think Battlefoam are making one too.
Now if only I could find someone who makes space corridors and...........

Also, Darkness has the right idea.
If you are feeling flashy you can base it on and /or frame it with hardboard, varnished hardwoods, mdf, plywood, aluminium etc etc
It's possible to create magnatized holes for bases make removable lids for easy storage, create interchangeable backdrops, brass plaques and allsorts.

Just decide what your means, diy skill level and quality of miniatures to be displayed is and build something accordingly.
