Hey guys,

I wanted some Termies, and to save money i bought 5 off ebay. (Painted as Impertial Fists, I Got em for 8 quid!)

Anyway, you know ebay, i expected to just spray em black when i got them and paint them again to match my army (always Ultramarines!)

But they arrived, and the paint job is astoundingly good. I paint pretty well, i highlight and use washes and add fine detail and such, but they are probably slightly better than mine.

So, it just seems a terrible waste to strip and paint them again, i was wondering, is it legal to mix chapters of the same codex? I mean, fluff wise, no problem, The Fists would happily and often fight alongside the UM as brothers in a large planet scale battle, but what about in tourney games?

Is it illegal to use a team of elites from another chapter even if they are an UM successor chapter and use the exact same codex and rules?

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

all the Imperial Fists players cringe to hear you refer to them as a UM successor.....what with them being First Founding.

and no, there's nothing stopping you mixing colour schemes in tournaments

The exact paint schemes of each unit shouldn't matter for most tournament rules. Many/most paint-scoring schemes, though, do award points for the army having a coherent look and theme.

Your best bet fluff-wise is to call it a Crusade force- representing two chapters cooperating. If you re-base the new models to match the basing scheme of your own, and make a crusade badge /marking which you add to them and to your own models, which visually links them.

Armies like this can be really striking, actually. I played against one at my first GT in Baltimore 2001, which was made up of Ultramarines, Storm Lords, and Red Scorpions, IIRC. It was gorgeous, and won Best Army.

Lol. Thanks for the answer mate, but cringe?

I am not entirely aware of all the background story for some Toy Soldiers, its not like they caught me in bed with their grandmother.

well your obviously not as big an obsessive compulsive uber nerd as I am .

But as said above, add a crusade badge to them to link the army together, and maybe paint a couple more units to match the Imperial Fists (which is a fun change from doing one colour scheme all the time) and make a crusade force, that would be awesome

I think they mean a common shoulder pad or maybe a seal or parchment roll that you might add to the terminators to bring some coherency to the unit.

EDIT: so it doesn't just look like imperial fists thrown in with space wolves. If 5 imp fists and 5 wolves are in the same squad but they all have a sash across their chests or a common shoulderpad with a red 1 symbol, then they are part of some joint task force or something.

best of luck, and congrats on the ebay win!

Black Templars often paint one of their kneecaps in a heraldic motif to signify their current crusade. If you did this for all figures in your army, that would also work to tie your mixed chapter fixs together while leaving the rest of the paint job alone.

The Imperial Fists and the Ultramarines hate each other almost as much as the Space Wolves and Dark Angels do. After the Emperor died the UM tried to push the Codex Astartes on everyone, and the IF didn't want any of it. Eventually they complied to prevent civil war.

Yes, from what I understand - Imperial Fists and Ultramarines aren't the best of friends. I don't think it would stop them from working together if they needed to. I'm going to be painting up some Imperial Fist Terminators for my Crimson Fist Army - Fluffwise, I think there would be much less tension if those two marine chapters were working side by side.

Crusade badges have sort of disappeared from the fluff for everyone except Black Templars... But back in 2nd edition, GW's 'official' markings for Imperial Armies included a Crusade Badge that was painted onto all troops and vehicles serving in that particular campaign. So whatever their individual unit markings, they would have an additional badge that was common to all Space Marine, Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus units that were taking part.

For Marines, this was generally painted onto a kneepad or shin. Although 'generally' is a pretty loose way to phrase it, since the 'Eavy Metal painters were about the only ones who actually ever put it on the models at all...

On a similar note, I had a TFC in preparation for the new BA, but they don't have one, do you think it would be OK to use it if I use the proper points etc?

In a tournament? You're not going to find too many tournaments that allow you to mix units from different codexes.

Oh, one other thing... you'll want to put your entire army on the samy style of base in order to further connect them.
