Meltaguns for Imperial Guard is expensive to obtain through normal means. You would either have to buy the "Imperial Guard Cadian with Plasma Gun and Meltagun" blister ($15 USD) or "Imperial Guard Cadian Command Squad" box set ($25). Even then you only receive a single Meltagun. Fortunately Games Workshop sells packs of 5 metal Meltagun bitz ($6.60 USD) through direct order. However, the hand griping those metal Meltagun bits belongs a Space Marine and not human.

Using metal Meltagun bitz, a box of 10 Cadian Shock Troops ($22), and a simple conversion, you could build 2 Guardsmen with Meltaguns.

Materials You Will Need:
-A box of Imperial guard Cadian Shock Troops
-Pack of direct order 5 metal Meltaguns bitz
-Glue
-Clippers
-File

Directions:

1. Open your box of Cadian Shock Troops. You should find 4 Sprues: 2 weapons/hands sprues and 2 Body Sprues. Clip off any head, torso, or legs of your choice. On the back of the sprues you will notice each bit is alphabetized. You will need the following bits:
-Left Arm D (tight angle)
-Left Arm H (open hand)
-Lasgun Arm H

Left Arm D:

Lasgun Arm H:

2. Clip open hand off of Left Arm H.

Then glue then hand facing up onto the end of Left Arm D

3. Clip off the Lasgun on Lasgun Arm H until all the remains is the arm and grip hand. Clip off the grip hand on the metal Meltagun bit.

4. First glue Lasgun Arm H to the torso. Position the Meltagun and then glue Left Arm D with the hand underneath the Meltagun supporting the Meltagun's grip.

Last, glue the Meltagun, legs, and head to the torso.

By now you should have a plastic Imperial Guard Cadian Guardsman holding a metal Meltagun.

Do the same with the other two sprues to build a second Meltagun Guardsman.

Finished!

Good job. I did the same sort of thing but with a plasma gun.

Interesting post; however meltaguns can be brought from www.bitz-box.co.uk for pretty cheap which is less than a box of guard. Other bitz sites will be cheaper too.

Bitzbox is always out of stock, charging £1 a meltagun.
Bitsandkits is also out of stock, charging £1.5-2

Games Workshop charge £4.50 for 5, which is cheaper than bits stores.

I guess it depends where you get them from and if plastic or metal.

Nice job. Now I don't have to spend a crapton on just a few metal models.

Just playing the devil's advocate here, but you could buy the IG Cadian Command Squad boxes for all the metla/plasma guns you need and have tons of fun bitz for the rest of your army. Not to mention all the extra bodies.

You only get one melta and one plasma per box. At 20 bucks minimum per box, you're looking at a hundred dollars to get the same amount of meltas as the 8 dollar pack of meltas. Why would anybody want to do that?

They do look significantly better, in addition you get all the other bits to make your squads very diverse. I know I would like a 2 PIS/CCS box ratio if I were to start building up an IG army just to have the diversity of bits.

I understand it's not for everyone (let alone the overwhelming majority), but I've actually purchased several of those boxes to trick out my infantry squads in addition to using the meltaguns. Besides, I'm keeping my FLGS in business.

But if you're building on a budget ,or just budget minded, it's not the best way to go about it.
