Hey everybody, I'm currently writing up a book and I'm wondering what stories are public domain? I wanna make sure that I won't infringe on any copyrighted material. I'm mainly leaning towards Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of oz, and others like them

I mean using bits and pieces of them, for example one of the characters think that she is a reject from Wonderland and she wants to get back. Something along the lines of that. I'm using parts and pieces of the stories

Does it have to be Wonderland in particular? Just describe it as some great dream world or something and make it unique that way you don't have to worry about copyrights.
Standard copyright is life + 70 years so the works of any author who died before 1940 are now out of copyright.
The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen was written using famous Victorian characters such as Alain Quatermain and Captain Nemo. Naturally Alan Moore weaved them into a new story.
